2017 Middle School Summer Reading List

Instructions: In addition to reading the Book of James and selected chapters from Psalms and Proverbs,

all middle school students must select one book from LIST A and one book from LIST B. (Note: 8th

grade students have an assigned book and study questions in lieu of LIST B reading.) After reading,

complete a report sheet for each book (copy below) and turn in the report sheets to the Language Arts

teacher for a grade. The reading must be completed and all three report sheets must be turned in to

the Language Arts teacher by Friday, August 25, 2017.

Where Eagles Soar Honors Reading

This year again, we will continue a “gold standard” for summer reading in which we encourage all students

to participate; however, participation in this part of the reading program is strictly voluntary.

Requirement for Where Eagles Soar Honors Reading: the student must complete all of the grade level

summer reading requirements as listed above, plus read one or more additional books from the grade level

list. Students will submit a book report for each additional book read from the list (must be a book not

previously read by the student). Students completing the honors reading requirement will receive extra

credit determined by the classroom teacher and an awards certificate of completion. The due date for the

honors reading is also August 25, 2017.

Not every book is recommended for every grade level. It is the parent’s responsibility to review the book

for suitability of content for the student as well as to gauge the book’s reading level with the student’s

ability. Most of the books from List A are considered classical literature including several children’s

classics. Books from List B are mostly Christian biographies.

If the student has read one of the books before, he/she must select a new book to be read this summer.

David Brainerd: A Love for the Lost-Brian Cosby (A young man beset with serious illness and hardships,

faithfully shares Christ with early Native Americans. Brainerd would die at an early age, but his life would

powerfully impact generations of Christians)
