Pine Road Elementary School’s 4th grade classes hosted an Intergenerational Day in May. Earlier this school year, students interviewed grandparents, family members, and local senior citizens. Using the information they gathered in those conversations, students created stories about each senior citizen participating in the two-day event. All enjoyed the sharing of the stories. There was great excitement, laughter, and learning for all involved in this wonderful cross-generational project.

Pine Road Elementary School had the inaugural performance of its new 5th Grade Drama Club on Friday, May 5th (Cinco De Mayo). The club performed the musical, “The Cuckoo,” a Mexican Folk Tale about the day the Cuckoo lost her colors. The play was directed by Mrs. Abramson and musical direction was by Mrs. Eisenman. “The Cuckoo,” is by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse.

LMHS Music Teacher, Dr. Sarah Gulish, and Arts Teacher, Stefanie Elstrom, are published authors! They wrote, “Creativity in the Classroom - An Innovative Approach to Integrate Arts Education,” which has been published by SensePublishers,

Here is a summary of their book, which is available at this link:

https://www.sensepublishers.com/catalogs/bookseries/transgressions-cultural-studies-and-education/creativity-in-the-classroom/

Creativity in the Classroom: An Innovative Approach to Integrate Arts Education provides curricular ideas for enhancing creative work in the classroom through the lens of integrative arts. The authors, both Art and Music Educators, provide practical ways in which to engage in creative thinking and making that can be applied to a variety of educational settings. Their work stems from years in the classroom teaching an integrative arts course at a public school in the United States. Through exploring big ideas such as identity, expression, storytelling, impact, and reaction, students learn to engage in a variety of creative art forms and work with others to create work that is meaningful. Each unit or big idea of study includes an explanation of the philosophy behind the unit, an overview of project ideas, and sample student workbook pages. Assessment strategies are provided with sample rubrics for evaluating student work.

Spanish Teacher, Jamie Lincow, shared a link to her latest published article about speaking 2 languages in the home. It has gotten a lot of traffic so far in different academic circles.

On June 6th, NBC10 streamed the documentary that LMHS Business teacher, Catherine Siciliano, worked on with Reporter Vince Lattanzio, “Suicide Prevention Breaking the Silence.” It will air on NBC10 later in the fall during Suicide Prevention Week. Vince Lattanzio, Mrs. Siciliano, and Jordan Birbaum (Minding your Minds.org) participated in a live Facebook Chat following the documentary. The documentary can be found out at: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Preventing-Suicide-Breaking-the-Silence-Digital-Documentary-426588071.html.

Murray Avenue School’s Drama Club put on a production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” under the direction of Ms. Loeffler. Many others—including Mrs. Stein, Ms. Curzi, Mr. Barnhart, and Mrs. D’Orazio—also helped the students with this amazing production.

In the play, the brainy and beautiful Belle yearns to escape her provincial life...and her brute of a suitor, Gaston. However, Belle gets more adventure than she wanted when she becomes a captive in the Beast’s enchanted castle! Dancing flatware, menacing wolves, and singing furniture filled the stage with thrills in this beloved fairy tale about very different people finding strength in one another and learning how to love.

The Lower Moreland Art Department would like to congratulate junior Jamie Mayer for winning third place in PA’s 13th District Congressional Art Show. This is an annual nationwide high school visual art competition to encourage artistic talent within each congressional district. Jamie’s self-portrait, titled Between the Lines, won third place in Congressman Brendan Boyle’s district. Judges for the show included art professors from Arcadia University and Penn State Abington. Her winning artwork will be on display for the next year in Brendan Boyle’s congressional office.

During the 2017-18 school year, LMHS Spanish teacher, Patricia Beichert, is embarking on a sabbatical experience to grow and enhance her knowledge of Spanish and the cultures which speak that language. One part of her sabbatical experience is partnering with a sister school, IES Las Salinas, in Valladolid, Spain. This spring, Mrs. Beichert traveled to the sister school to establish that partnership.

Mrs. Stefanie Elfstom, a LMHS Art teacher, is in contact with the Art department at the Sister School, and they are now doing an exchange of art projects. Our students’ art will be displayed at IES Las Salinas, and art created at our Sister School will be displayed at our Art Show in May.

While in Spain, she attended Las Fallas, a festival in Valencia, the study of which is included in the curriculum. Mrs. Beichert is keeping a blog and maintaining a website with videos and pictures so that she and her LMHS students can converse about her experiences. Mrs. Mary Agnew, the District’s Technology Integrator, has been integral in creating this website.

STADIUM DEDICATION

“...a testament to how much Mark is loved and respected by this community.”

“Throughout my entire life, my father has been the constant voice of clairvoyance, and wisdom.”

“ He is a ‘gap closer.’ He closes the gap between what his players are and what they can become. He is, in effect, a transition manager.”

“LMHS exemplifying the high ideals of good sportsmanship, conducting itself in an ethical manner, and setting an example for others to follow.”

Mark Mayson, a Lower Moreland icon, announced his retirement. The district responded by acknowledging and celebrating his 36 years of dedicated service by naming the stadium at the Murray Avenue School in his honor.

The dedication ceremony was held on June 2nd. Dr. Marykay Feeley, Superintendent of Schools, opened the program. She acknowledged the hundreds of people gathered as a testament to how much Mark is loved and respected by this community. Dr. Feeley stated, “You are leaving a legacy of excellence as an Athletic Director, a mentor, a coach and a leader. You have given so many of your students a chance to shine, to make great memories, and to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”

Colin Mayson, Mark’s son, was the next to offer a tribute. Colin stated, “Throughout my entire life, my father has been the constant voice of clairvoyance, and wisdom. He’s shown integrity, commitment, and a humbling work ethic that inspires us everyday.” It was a moving statement on behalf of the family.

Others on the program were Scott Layer, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Council Rock High School South; Dr. David Archibold, Retired Lower Moreland Superintendent, Greg Doviak, Retired Principal LMHS, Pat DeBelle, captain of the 1996 LM Lions Team and Maxwell Award Winner and Timothy Reilly, Friend and Assistant Football Coach and English Teacher. All spoke of the legacy he leaves behind. Tim Reily stated, “Mark shares a skill that all great educators, mentors and coaches exhibit. He is a ‘gap closer.’ He closes the gap between what his players are and what they can become. He is, in effect, a transition manager.”

Accolades to the Planning Committee, the LMHS Jazz Ensemble, Nutrition, Inc. and the Custodial Staff for organizing this memorable event.
