Summary

We see more overseas companies investing and setting up operations in Singapore, particularly in the internet, hi-tech and healthcare sectors.

In a recent Economist’s Asia Business Outlook Survey, almost 30% of the respondents indicated their revenue growth in Asia has declined; yet within this “new normal” of lowered expectations, most still anticipate growth of some kind. Across the majority of Asian economies, respondents highlighted economic growth and technology penetration rates as key factors impacting profitability. Almost half of respondents predicted Asia will account for 21-40% of their organisations’ worldwide revenues by 2020. As growth in developed markets stabilizes, many foreign companies are seeking out new opportunities for growth in South East Asia. We see more overseas companies investing and setting up operations in Singapore, particularly in the internet, hi-tech and healthcare sectors. The Singapore government hopes to take the lead in developing the fintech industry and believes that it will be the crucial differentiator for Singapore to remain as a regional financial hub. Pharmaceutical, clinical healthcare, ICT, transportation, construction, consumer goods (FMCG) and retail industries are actively hiring and remain positive in their outlook. Other industries like energy and manufacturing are currently in transition, gearing up towards better time by investing into technology and R&D. In the professional services sector, auditors, engineers, accountants and lawyers with regional exposure will be in demand. Localisation of the workforce has resulted in a situation where there is a shortage of skilled local professionals to fill niche occupations and industries. This will continue to exert pressure on salaries in 2017. To attract the best talents, companies will need to proactively differentiate their business from competitors and improve their employment value proposition.

Despite the economic uncertainty, it is business as usual for accounting firms and those offering professional services. The accounting sector continues to grow, due to Singapore’s Committee to Develop the Accountancy Sector's (CDAS) push to transform the industry into a hub for the Asia Pacific region by 2020.

Hiring outlook remains positive. Most employers have indicated that they are recruiting finance and accounting staffs to fill new positions that come with regional opportunities. The focus will be on talents with key competencies in business valuation, internal audit, tax expertise, risk management and compliance.

“New hospitals, nursing homes and clinics continue to drive demand for healthcare professionals”

With the rapid expansions and building of new hospitals, community hospitals, nursing homes and clinics, the demand for trained doctors, nurses and allied health professionals remain in great demand.

As part of the retention of healthcare talents, hospitals have adopted salary revision biannually in a move to retain healthcare talents.

In 2016, we see the clinical healthcare industry launching into active marketing campaigns across platforms such as print, TV and social media to attract more talents. 2016 has been a year of transitions; the global oil and gas industry is experiencing one of the biggest challenge in 30 years. The industry revenue for 2016 has dipped in comparison to 2015, with drop in profit from 20% to 30%. This market phenomenon is likely to continue into 2017.

Augmented reality, advanced speech recognition system using cloud computing, in-built car sensors and gesture recognition are the latest trend in automotive technology. Future vehicles will have WIFI, mobile data network and will be able to use OTA (Over-the-air) to upgrade firmware wirelessly. Auto technology is closely linked to driving. 2016 was a tough year for the Internet/Mobile industry and companies were cautious in hiring. The retail and consumer markets have held up better than expected, however hiring has been sporadic and most legal hires were still replacement positions. The pharmaceutical and life sciences sector remains a beacon of hiring as firms look to tap into China’s growing affluent and ageing population.

Regulatory and compliance hiring in 2016 continued with a steady stream of mandates as most companies looked to ensure they were following best practices. Many compliance teams have split out from the legal department with separate local reporting lines. Hiring has plateaued in recent years with an increase in mid-level replacement roles in the market rather than demand for leadership roles in previous years.

The IP practice continues to grow rapidly in China, predominantly in patent, trademark, copyright, brand protection, licensing and related fields. Candidates with both science and law backgrounds are sought after. As the IP teams in most firms are relatively stable, hiring activity in this practice will be moderate.

2017 will still be a tough year for the supply chain function as most companies will expect to enhance their supply chain capability to support business team better and improve cost efficiency. Therefore demand & supply planning and network planning will be the hot functions. Regarding direct and indirect sourcing functions, more strategic sourcing roles such as regional and global commodity management positions will be set up in China.
