I am honored to be the 2017

President of the HBCA of Brevard. I don?t take this role lightly, and I

am committed to doing all I can to promote both the HBCA and the home building industry at large. I?d like to take this opportunity to share with you the vision for the HBCA over the next year.

ADVOCACY

The greatest value proposition we can provide our members is Advocacy. It?s a direct benefit to our builder members as well as our associates.  Successfully garnering both regulatory and political influence helps to remove industry barriers and promote moving our industry forward.

LABOR ISSUES

The labor shortage has become one of the biggest issues facing our industry today. We now

recognize that this is not a short term issue, and the HBCA is focused on a long-term strategy to impact this critical area.

EDUCATION

Our goal is to create intriguing, relevant content for our audience, increasing engagement and awareness of the HBCA to members and non-members alike. Support and promotion of these activities is a critical component to the success of our educational programs.

.......

I truly believe that by driving our value proposition in these critical areas, we will build a professionally sound organization that provides ample resources to our members, successful influence in our local government, and promotes our industry throughout Brevard.

I take pride in moving into the future with all of you.

The House of Represent- atives on Jan. 11 approved H.R. 5, the Regulat ory Account abil i t y Act , legisla- tion that would modernize federal rulemaking under the Administrative Proce- dures Act and make the regulatory process more transparent, agencies more accountable and regula- tions more cost- effective.

This comes one week after the House passed two other NAHB-supported regulatory relief measures ? the REINS Act and the Midnight Rules Relief Act.

CongratulationsPresident Trump

NAHB congratulated Donald Trump after he was sworn as the 45th President of the United States.

In an official statement, NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald said: ?The nation?s home builders look forward to working with President Trump and bipartisan leaders of the 115th Congress to keep housing a national priority, to provide regulatory relief for the nation?s small business community and to advance policies that will expand homeownership and rental housing oppor- tunities for all Americans.?

New Fund t o Address Labor Shor t age

The planning for the Spring Parade of Homes is in full swing. This year marks the first in Brevard history that the parade will span over a two week time frame. This gives the consumers more time to visit each and every home to find the home of their dreams.

The Parade of Homes is dedicated to showcasing the best builders, designers and craftsmen Brevard County has to offer. Major marketing to include Social Media, digital

magazine, local Billboard advertising and even TV commercials, gives parade entires and sponsors the perfect way to get their business recognized.

Interested in having your model home , virtual entry or business featured in our Spring Parade of Homes? We'd love to hear from you! Call the HBCA at 321-254-3700 or email [email protected].

The housing industry has created the Skilled Labor Fund to address the lack of skilled labor entering the residential construction field.

NAHB, the National Housing Endowment, the National Kitchen + Bath Association, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and SGC Horizon announced new fund during the Builder 's Show in Orlando.

The Fund will be launched with the support of SGC Horizon, parent company of Professional Builder and Professional Remodeler magazines.

The fund will be used to attract and train skilled labor for the residential construction market by providing scholarships for students to attend accredited training schools and training facilit ies across the country.

According to the latest data from the 2015 American Community Survey, the median age of owner-occupied homes nationwide is 37 years.

The age of housing st ock is not evenly distri- buted across the United States. Among the states, New York has the oldest homes with a median age of 57, followed by Massachusetts at 53 years. The median age of homes in the District of Columbia, which is entirely urban, is 75 years.

The newest homes are in the West. The median age of homes in Nevada is only 20, followed by Arizona where half of all owner-occupied homes were built in the last 24 years.

Older houses are less energy-efficient than new construction and ultimately will require remodeling and renovation in the future.

Flood Risk St andard Would Disrupt Market

NAHB recently filed comments opposing HUD?s planned implementation of the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard. The proposed rule is substantially flawed and should be withdrawn.

HUD?s proposal unnecessarily expands floodplain management requirements and fundamentally threatens access to FHA mortgage insurance programs for single- family home buyers and

multifamily builders. If implemented, the proposal will severely disrupt the housing market and harm count- less families.

2017 Spike Club Social The Annual Spike Club Social was held last Thursday, January 26, and was a huge success. Over 30 HBCA Spikes attended to recognize the accomplishments made throughout the past year.

The Social was hosted at Hemingway's Tavern in Melbourne with great food and drinks. Awards were given out to those who have recently achieved a new status within the Spike Club.

Some Spikes are now getting ready to board the Spike Cruise setting sail February 6th. If you want more information on the Spike Club or how to sail the seas next year call the office at 321-254-3700 or visit www.hbca-brevard.org/membership/spike-club/
