“I love a lot of things about Guelph, both the city and the University as a whole. But the major thing that I really like is the sense of togetherness; everybody just loves one another, they help each other, and the kindness and politeness is incredible. I’m not a big fan of huge cities, I prefer smaller cities. And though the city of Guelph is still quite large, it gives you a small-town feeling making it peaceful, a great environment to study, and the students are amazing!”

English Language Programs at the University of Guelph are designed for students

who are serious about improving their academic English skills and succeeding at

their university studies. We will make your transition to studying and living in Canada

a lot easier. Our experienced and knowledgeable instructors and staff members will

ensure that you have the chance not only to study English, but to use it extensively

in academic and social situations, giving you the confidence to communicate

effectively with professors, staff members and students.

english language Certificate program (elCp)

Completion of our English Language Certificate Program satisfies the English Language Proficiency requirement for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Guelph. If you are looking for a pathway to a degree program and you meet the academic admission requirements, the ELCP is the ideal choice. After successful completion of the ELCP, a TOEFL or IELTS test will not be required to enter a degree program. The ELCP will provide you with the academic English skills you need to meet the language proficiency require-ments for admission to your degree program and will ensure that you have the language skills that you need to be successful once you are there.

For more information on undergraduate admission requirements, please visit: admission.uoguelph.ca

Graduate preparation program (Gpp)

GPP is for students who want to study in graduate programs at the University of Guelph or other Canadian universities. The program has two components. The first component is equivalent to the English Language Certificate. The second component

allows you to focus on the specific skills you will need to be successful as a graduate student. The GPP is designed for students with IELTS 5.5 or higher.

business english program (bep)

Our four-week Business English Program develops your communica-tion skills and cross-cultural aware-ness. For more details visit OpenEd.uoguelph.ca/en/students/Business-

level placement

We will conduct placement testing at the beginning of every session to ensure that you are studying at the appropriate level. If you already have an IELTS or TOEFL score, include it on your application. We can tell you approximately what level you will be in and how long your studies will take.

learn from Canadian students

Being able to communicate effectively with your fellow students is just as important for your academic success as understanding your professors. Conversation tutors are an important part of the ELCP curriculum. You will meet with a conversation tutor every week to allow you to apply what you

have learned in your classes in a structured conversation practice setting. Our Buddy Program allows you to make more informal connec-tions with Canadian students. You can choose to go to the movies together, sporting events, have coffee, or explore any common interests you might have. It’s a great way to make friends and learn about Canada and the University of Guelph.

living in Canada

If you choose our homestay option, you will have the support of a Canadian family as you begin your studies. You will have the opportunity to practice your English while you share meals and conversation, and learn more about Canada and Guelph. Homestay fees cover accommodation and three meals a day. Depending on availability you can also choose to live on campus in one of our student residences.
