BAY STATE GAMES HISTORY

The Bay State Summer Games is Massachusetts’ own Olympic-style athletic competition that has annually been held since 1982. Each year the Summer Games features 6,000 athletes competing in 29 sports. Athletes of all ages and abilities represent over 300 Massachusetts communities as well as Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New York each year. The Summer Games take place annually during the month of July consisting of showcase sports, individual sports, and team sports. Tryouts for showcase sports are held during the month of June statewide. Finals for all Summer Games competitions are held in the Metro Boston and Central Massachusetts areas. The Bay State Games are a program of an organization called The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation (MASF). MASF is a 501© (3), non-profit organization that was established to host the first sanctioned State Games of Massachusetts. Today, the MASF operates with the mission of promoting personal development, education, physical fitness, teamwork, and good sportsmanship through athletic competitions and educational programs for the people of Massachusetts. The Bay State Games was founded by Dave McGillivray in 1982. McGillivray was on the Governor’s Council of Physical Fitness and Sports. He wanted to create a state-wide summer sports festival for Massachusetts. McGillivray appointed Doug Arnot to pitch the idea of “Sportsfest” to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to become the executive director. “Sportsfest” started off with only four sports with 500 athletes. The games were conducted on hardwood floors and playing fields at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Summer Games’ breakthrough year came in 1985 when basketball became the showcase event in both women’s and men’s divisions. The same year, Arnot developed the idea of creating a winter sports festival for Massachusetts athletes. The Winter Games took place in the Northern Berkshire region because of the available facilities. Four hundred athletes took part in the inaugural Winter Games with competitions including figure skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, and speed skating. Within the first couple of year of the Winter Games, there was much experimentation. Figure staking and alpine skiing are the only two sports which have been included in every Winter Games. Current sports in the Winter Games include figure skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoe racing, curling, masters ice hockey, and bowling. Today, the Bay State Games produces quality Olympic-style competitions in summer and winter sports. The Bay State Games is a member of the National Congress of State Games which consists of over 30 member states. The National Congress of State Games is a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Multi-Sport Organization Counsel. Athletes in selected sports who win medals at the Bay State Summer and Winter Games are invited to compete at the State Games of America held bi-annually at a selected location within the country. The State Games of America has been held in St. Louis, MO; Hartford, CT; Colorado Springs, CO; San Diego, CA; Hershey, PA; and Lincoln, NE. The Games will be held in Lynchburg, VA in 2019. Figure Skating has been one of the largest sports in the State Games of America since its inception. Massachusetts has lead the way in State Games of America Figure Skating participation often having the most competitors of any state in the event.

Athletes represent over 300 Massachusetts communities, and range in age from 5 to 91. Tryouts are held throughout the state in June and finals take place in Boston and Central Massachusetts in mid-July.

Bay State Winter Games

Since 1985 the Berkshire County of Massachusetts has hosted the Bay State Winter Games. Approximately 1,000 athletes compete in figure skating, alpine skiing, and masters’ ice hockey. Participants represent 200 Massachusetts communities, and range in age from 8 – 70.

Future Leaders Scholarship Program The Future Leaders Scholarship annually awards six $2,000 college scholarships to Bay State Summer and Winter Games participants who demonstrate leadership through community service, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. Over $250,000 in scholarships has been award since 1985.

Sportsmanship Initiative New Balance and the MASF created this initiative to educate all Bay State Games participants on the elements of good sportsmanship. The sportsmanship of all participants is evaluated and over 200 participants are recognized for exhibiting exemplary behavior on the field of play.

Bay State Games Hall of Fame The Bay State Games Hall of Fame recognizes athletes, volunteers, coaches, officials, and organizers who have had an extraordinary impact on the people and communities that are a part of the Games. Inductees include former Bay State Games athletes who competed in the Olympics, NBA, NHL, and MLB.

High School Ambassador Program The Bay State Games High School Ambassador Program provides opportunities for student-athletes at high schools across Massachusetts who are interested in pursuing a career in sports management. This program designates nominated students to serve as Bay State Games spokespersons at their school and provide them with first hand sport marketing experience. These students also have an opportunity to work at Bay State Games events in the summer and gain valuable sports operations experience.

Athlete of the Year The Bay State Games Athlete of the Year program was established to recognize individuals who excel above and beyond their participation in the Bay State Games. Individuals are chosen based on overall achievements, involvement in the Bay State Games, and involvement in their community, effort, sportsmanship, and attitude on and off the field. Nominations can be submitted by coaches, commissioners, parents, volunteers, and even other players.

Adopt an Athlete Program The Bay State Games created the Adopt an Athlete Program to offer an opportunity for low-income athletes and families to participate in the Games at no cost. Every dollar raised through the Adopt-an Athlete Program will help remove the financial barriers and afford Massachusetts residents the opportunity to participate in our yearly tradition, regardless of financial status.

Yvonne Chern – Badminton

Yvonne is from the Philippines, where the sport of badminton is wildly popular. Chern studied at Cornell University in the 1990’s where she met her husband Wen-foo, together moved to Wayland, Massachusetts with her husband in hopes of bringing badminton to the east coast. She set forward to create Boston Badminton Club in Westborough, Massachusetts. This multi-billion dollar facility was opened in 2011 and quickly became host of the United States Badminton Team trials, previously never before held outside of California. Currently, Yvonne serves as the manager of Boston Badminton, is on the board of USA Badminton, and as the Vice President of both Northeast Badminton Association and the Massachusetts Badminton Association where she has worked for over 20 years. Beth Sopka - Badminton

Beth grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts and studied Psychology at Harvard, where she then started her career teaching at the Towel School and being head of the Mathematics Department at the Waring School until 2005. Her love for badminton began when her friends brought her to the Gut’n’Feathers Club in Marblehead in the 90’s, where she introduced the sport to her son. From that point forward she traveled the country competing and playing badminton and made it her mission to expand the sport back home on the east coast. In 1996, she started the New England Junior Cup and co-founded the North Shore Junior Badminton Association in 1997. She became President of the Massachusetts Badminton Association in 2000 and also has served as Vice President of the Northeast Badminton Association since 2006. His next move was to University of Virginia in 2015, where he spent three seasons as director of recruiting and player development before moving on to his title of an Assistant Coach. Vandross helped lead the Cavaliers to winning their first NCAA National Championship this past 2018-19 season. He currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with his wife, Deirdre, and twin children.
