Alcanar explosionsOn 16 August 2017, an explosion destroyed a house in Alcanar. Theexplosion is believed to have killed a woman and possibly two otherindividuals, with police doing DNA testing to confirm. It alsoinjured six other people and caused substantial damage toneighbouring houses. Police initially thought it was an accidental gasexplosion, but hours later believed stockpiled explosives hadaccidentally gone off. A Moroccan man was injured in the explosionand taken to the hospital, where he will be questioned by police. 120canisters of butane and propane were found inside the house.[15][16]Catalan bomb squads carried out a controlled explosion at theproperty where the gas canisters were stored. There was speculation

that the terrorists may have intended to take trucks loaded with explosives and combustible gas to attack theSagrada Familia.[17][18][19]

Police are "working under the hypothesis that the terrorists taken down in Cambrils were related to theevents that took place in Barcelona and Alcanar".[20] Police chief Josef Lluis Trapero believed terroristswere in the process of manipulating the gas canisters when they exploded, after which they decided tocontinue their plans by conducting more rudimentary vehicle ramming attacks.[21]

Second explosion

A second explosion occurred at the same location during excavation, which may have been caused by aspark from a backhoe igniting a gas canister among the debris. At least nine people were injured, with onepolice officer in critical condition.[22]

BarcelonaVehicular assault on pedestrians in La Rambla

A policewoman was also injured in the attack. A nearby policeman shot and killed four of the assailants anda fifth died of his injuries hours later.[41] One of the assailants was filmed by bystanders being shot bypolice, including as he rushed towards policemen.[14] The men were linked to the Barcelona attackaccording to the police.[42]
