PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 has been a fantastic year for Perth Netball Association and it is not over yet! After very constructive discussions last year with our members regarding the conundrums of participation growth, PNA has managed to squeeze just a bit more out of our facilities and provide more court time for netball. A huge thankyou to our Clubs for working with the introduction of the Expression of Interest (EOI) process. Having very early information relating to expected team numbers enabled our administration to monitor numbers and facilitate extra teams into areas with space.

Clubs advised via the Members Forum in July, that the EOI process was not overly cumbersome from their perspective, in fact it helped in many cases, so we will run with it again this year. We do expect to be full again so the message remains - previous numbers will automatically be accepted, add your EOI numbers where you feel they may be needed and we will do our best to accommodate. Full information and instructions will be provided in the next few weeks.

The growth in the Friday night Competition is significant as it has taken quite a bit of pressure off Saturday mornings and developed into a special family outing. It is a very happy competition with mascots, sausage sizzles, coffees, conversation and interestingly some growth in boy’s participation which is fabulous to see.

The other exciting development this year has been the commencement of our No Limits program. The No Limits program is designed for participants with an intellectual disability aged 11 and over to engage with the sport of netball, meet new friends and play in a safe environment as part of a team. It started with a trial team in our Spring 2016 competition and has grown to two teams of players, two rounds of participations programs, our first PNA team in the Smarter Than Smoking Association Championships, five of our participants representing Western Australia in the Marie Little Shield (the National Champs), playing an exhibition match on Grand Final Day and now hosting a round robin with the other Associations as a part of our Spring Competition. Thank you to some very dedicated people for coordinating this incredibly very special program- Monique Smith and her two daughters, Bridgette and Haylee and Rosemairy Ovenden as their Team Manager.

No one could have missed the disappointment felt when the Town of Cambridge Administration recommended to Council that PNA’s application for additional lighting be rejected. Whilst Council did not completely reject the application, they put enough of a hold on it to prevent lights until 2020 at the earliest. This decision will have a direct impact on participation numbers in the future, mostly in the primary school age groups. The Executive Committee will continue to lobby for the lights despite the negativity expressed by the Town.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to get any direction on the re-blistering of our prime top courts. Numerous visits have been made to inspect the blisters however, at this stage there is still no determination of the cause and subsequently no news of remediation. Slightly better news on the cracking of the surfaces around the lower courts. A meeting last week with stakeholders agreed on addressing the problem areas over the summer break – there is some chance that the works may carry over into February. If this does happen, a contingency plan has been developed and those Clubs involved will be fully informed in advance.

The Courtside Kiosk continues to provide quality food and beverage under the guidance of Mercia Ullbricht with her crew of dedicated workers and book of secret recipes. This year we lashed out and provided some weather protection for the outside coffee area to enable direct service to NetSetGoers and installed the umbrellas in the forecourt area which have been extremely well utilised. More weather protection (Subject to Council approval) and spectator seating is planned for 2018.

It takes a very hard working, dedicated team to conduct an event which has the quality and quantity of PNA’s Winter Competition.


Executive – there are 13 volunteers in this group who provide a myriad of skills to the committee and our Competition. We are all passionate and thrive on the challenges put before us.

Thank you to everyone who contributes in any way to the success of PNA’s operations.

Tonight, we operate under an amended Constitution as per the Incorporated Associations Act 2015. In line with the Club Forum discussions, in the next few months a review of the Executive structure of our Association will commence which will no doubt lead to further amendments in the Constitution. This document provides the guiding principles of how PNA operates and as our Association grows it is appropriate that we ensure that these principles are still relevant. Please take the opportunity to take part in the review to ensure we develop a structure and constitution which is concise and functional and meets the outcomes we set to achieve.

Finally, a farewell to members of the Executive this year who have contributed greatly to PNA. Linda Christou who has had several roles on the Committee, most recently as Vice president. Aptly known as our Switzerland, Linda has provided integral guidance based on her sound business knowledge and long involvement with netball.

Alex Thornton who over the last couple of years has developed and upgraded our social networking profile including the website, face book and most recently the Umpires Forum.

And me. I will be turning to greener pastures in the south west. I cannot imagine what life will be like for me without PNA however, there is a good chance that Kirup will get a netball team soon! I leave PNA in very good hands and wish everyone great success in their netball endeavours.

Grading information was greatly improved this year, which meant the Grading Committees had more past player information that in prior years. The voting system was again mostly successful, with very few votes separating the players. We have had some feedback from Open Division 1 clubs are establishing some parameters for the 2018 season.

ASSISTANT COMPETITION COORDINATOR

The 2017 winter competition for Years 5 and 6 and NetSetGo commenced on Friday 5 May 2017, a week later than the other competitions this year. The Years 5 and 6 competitions then had 3 grading rounds and 10 round robin rounds. This will continue in 2018. NetSetGo played 5 rounds and then were rearranged to make the divisions more competitive for the last 6 rounds. In 2018 NetSetGo will play for a total of 12 rounds.

Our Friday afternoon competition was immensely popular and we virtually doubled our numbers from 2016 going from a total of 43 teams in 2016 to 93 teams in 2017. On Saturday mornings, NetSetGo was staggered across 3 time slots, Year 5s continued to all play at 8am and Year 6s at 9am.

Fact sheets specifically targeting Net Set Go were distributed throughout the early part of the season to continue to provide spectators and participants with a better understanding of the Net Set Go rules which do differ to normal netball rules in a number of specific areas. As they were such a huge success we are also going to have them for year 5 and year 6 for the 2018 season.

To assist coaches in these younger age groups, as many are parents who used to play netball, we held a number of free coaching courses designed specifically for NetSetGo and years 5 and 6 players. These courses were very popular and will be continued next year.

Every year we hold a goal shooting competition for year 5 and year 6 players. This year 117 players attempted to shoot as many goals as possible out of 10 attempts from various marked spots around the goal circle. Our winner scored a remarkable 9 goals out of 10 attempts. Congratulations to Jessica Ward – West Leederville Primary School.

This year’s Grading Committee comprised Vanessa Casement, Sid Cox, Tibbie Galbraith and Michelle Atwell. These ladies were excellent in evaluating all the available information to grade and re grade teams into the most appropriate division. I would like to thank them for their valuable contribution.

Our Spring Competition is rapidly growing and is becoming a significant contribution to the Perth Netball Association Competition base.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS Smarter Than Smoking Association Championships Trials were held in February. Thank you to all who helped in the selection process. PNA was able to field 4 teams in the 12’s age group, 3 in the 13’s age group, 3 in the 14’s age group, 2 in the 15’s age group and 1 in the 17’s age group. There were also three Open Teams that represented the Perth Netball Association at the Members carnival with both the Division 1 Open and Division 3 Open runners up in their respective Grand final. These teams enjoyed the experience of representing their association at the carnival and further developing their netball skills and understanding of game strategies throughout the development program. Thank you to all the selectors, coaches and managers. Special thank you Rosemairy Ovenden and Carol Watson for organising all the fittings for team uniforms and Carol also for providing umpires for the Trials. A big thank you to all the PNA staff who worked tirelessly to ensure that the Members carnival was a success. Thanks to the Coaching Mentors, Jo McKee and Kath Hewitt, who were involved in our Development Program. This was a new initiative from PNA in 2017 offering assistance and guidance to our Coaches. Congratulations to Trinity Rond PNA 14’s team 1 on being selected into the 15’s state schoolgirls team Congratulations to Ainsley Harmsen on winning the Bette Allison Development Coaching Award. Ainsley coached the PNA 12/Under Team 3 at the Association Championships over the three day carnival to 5 wins in 6 games. The 12/U Team went onto win their Division. Ainsley is currently working as an Assistant Coach with the Perth Lions Cadets 12/U team 1.

Primary School Coaching Clinics Once again the primary school coaching clinics have proved to be very popular. Two clinics were held in the April holidays. Week 1 we had 252 participants and week 2 we had 170. Our July school holiday clinic we had 265 participants. Thank you to Yevonne Gillett for assisting with the holiday clinics and thank you to all the wonderful coaches who make themselves available during their school holidays. This year we will again be offering a holiday clinic in the second week of the October Holidays.

NetSetGO Participation This is the association’s seventh year of running the NSG programs. The skills program is aimed at 5-8 year olds. In term 2, we ran NetSetGO on Friday afternoon and also on a Saturday afternoon. The Friday session had 86 girls registered and the Saturday had 53 girls registered. In term 3 we again offered the 7 week program on both Friday and Saturday. Friday had 46 girls registered and Saturday had 28 girls registered. Many of the girls registered in the term 3 program had returned from the term 2 program. NetSetGO will again be offered in term 4 on Wednesday afternoon. The program will be seven weeks long. Year 2 players will be offered 4 week skills program followed by 3 weeks of full games to prepare them for competition next year. ASSOCIATION UMPIRING DEVELOPMENT OFFICER We started the season well and were able to Squad Open division 1, 2,and 3 and also Junior division 1. It’s been a great season and a very interesting one. I continued doing my own thing on Saturday mornings finding and coaching young umpires that may have been missed with so many games happening at each timeslot. We achieved 38 National C Badges, one of whom has gone back to Hong Kong with a C Badge to her name and very proud she was of her achievement. I had to get permission to test Tang from both Hong Kong and Netball WA, it’s quite an achievement and a credit to those umpires and the work they put in. I have a list of those who were tested if you would like to check on your umpires. Quite a few also have Umpired finals this year, quite an achievement for girls so young. We also acquired by sheer hard work by the coaching staff 4 National B Badges; Emily Annand, Montana Aquino, Mikayla Dunn and Mel Leeder. Emily and Montana have quite a few State League games under their belts already. Our awards this year were very hard to decide on, so many umpires were very worthy of receiving these awards, and, after much discussion this is how it came out ;

Finally, thank you to all the Club Conveners who supported my efforts this year. The proof is in the pudding with the badges we gained. Also a big thankyou to Monique Smith for her support and help with all the testing paperwork. It was a massive undertaking and all umpires had to be checked for accreditation. My final and everlasting thanks goes to Alex Di Bartolomeo who has been with me every step of the way testing and coaching and also our squad and what a great squad it is. ASSISTANT ASSOCIATION UMPIRING DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Umpiring Mentoring This year our team undertook and provided umpire coaching to a total of 208 various Schools and Club Umpires throughout the Friday evening and Saturday morning winter competition. Written reports were provided to the various Schools and Clubs to provide them with ongoing feedback with respect to their umpires. This work culminated with a number of umpires being awarded their National “C” Badge. Of the 208 reports provided, only 2 reports (less than 1%) submitted to schools/clubs did not agree with the feedback provided. It should be noted that a number of positive responses have been received with regards to the feedback provided by the Umpire Mentors, which is extremely encouraging. It is hoped that the ongoing umpire mentoring service will continue to expand in the 2018 Winter Competition. I am also in debt for the ongoing support of my team, which undertook the mentoring of the umpires whether it was during the Friday evening or the Saturday morning Umpire Mentors

Josephine Anthony Online Umpires Forum Following the 2016 Members Survey, a better way of communicating with school and club umpires was required. An online umpire’s forum which can be accessed through the Perth Netball Association Website has been created for Umpires, Clubs and Schools. This enables them to obtain specific information with regards to umpiring at the Perth Netball Association.

As discussed at the recent Club Forum, the PNA Umpires online forum is now operational thanks to the efforts of Alex Thornton to get this site up and running.

Registered users of the forum are able to obtain information and also ask questions in relation to umpiring matters in a secure, managed environment.

An email has gone out to all schools and clubs to encourage all umpires to join this information forum.

A second email has also been sent out to all current PNA badged umpires.

Other Items/Issues

Issues relating to bad parent/relatives on the sideline is still causing some concerns

Issues on Saturday morning NetSetGo competition with players still continuing to dive and wrestling for the ball from the opposition. Education to all coaches, umpires and players that this is not acceptable and that someone will become injured if this continues. Newsletter and weekly announcements still are having little impact and is a regular occurrence

Jewellery newsletter to all Schools/Clubs regards to players wearing jewellery, this still continues to pose issues. Fit bits, bracelets, taped earrings, chains etc. Parents are still continuing to have their children’s ears pierced and then coming to the

courts and are expecting them to take to the court. Numerous emails and announcements are made each week regarding this

Umpires officiating at these courts “MUST” undertake pregame checks to ensure that goal post padding is on and that the players have also been checked for no jewellery of any description

Numerous flyers outlining the rules for NetSetGo were also distributed in all time periods to assist coaches, managers, and family members. I think this is having some impact, but it would be greatly appreciated if this information could be passed within the schools/clubs prior to the commencement of the 2018 Winter Competition.

MARKETING REPORT This year, PNA was selected as one of five associations to benefit from a partnership between Channel 9 Perth and Netball WA. This partnership included three Channel 9 activation days at Matthews during the winter season, with a fourth to take place on the first night of the Spring competition. Four teams from PNA were also awarded Channel 9 “Team of the Week”, and were featured in a live Channel 9 weather broadcast from Matthews during team training. PNA clubs also continue to benefit greatly from the Belt-Up balls campaign courtesy of the Insurance Commission of WA (ICWA) via our affiliation with Netball WA. Each year, ICWA donates 5 “Belt-Up” branded balls to each of our Open teams in a deal worth in excess of $10,000 to our association. PNA welcomed a new sponsor this year in Giant Nissan Osborne Park. The dealership is keen to support PNA members with discounts for vehicle purchases and servicing. They also provided a loan vehicle to help our development squads travel to Northam for the Wheatbelt carnival just prior to the long-weekend. We also continued to benefit from our existing sponsors Priceline, Aveling Homes (formerly known as Next Residential) and Envision Medical Imaging. We will be hoping to secure all three of these sponsors again for the next two years. Schweppes Australia continues to service PNA as our major drinks provider for the Courtside Café. This year, we were fortunate to be able to install a new Gatorade vending machine which has become a welcome addition for players and spectators seeking cold drinks, particularly if they are in a rush or when the Café is not open. Perm-A-Pleat Sportswear have been associated with PNA for many years and continue to provide valuable support to our development program. Through a long-running association with PNA’s Uniform Coordinator, Rosemairy Ovenden, Perm-a-Pleat do a fantastic job to ensure our teams look so professional on and off the court. To confirm their wonderful support for PNA, Perm-a-Pleat has recently agreed to provide the uniforms for our “No Limits” teams. PNA has also benefited this year through several smaller but significant donations from local businesses;

Mecca Sports donated 2 netballs to each club at the start of the 2017 winter season;

Citrus WA supported our holiday clinics providing free oranges and mandarins to participants

and also donated the prizes for our junior goal shooting competition;

Quest Apartments West Perth donated the prize for our Volunteer of the Year and is offering

PNA members corporate rates;

Baskin Robbins Subiaco and Chix Shed donated prizes for our Spring competition in 2016 and

Tutti Frutti Leederville will donate prizes for our 2017 Spring competition.

PNA is currently in negotiation with new potential sponsors for the 2018 season and we welcome any other approaches from businesses who would like to support us. PUBLICITY REPORT This year has been another successful one at Perth Netball Association, with the support of online and traditional media to share news and information with our members and the wider community. Our key focus is still using these platforms to ensure our members are kept well informed and able to communicate with PNA and each other, to build strong relationships among our community. There is still scope to improve these services and grow our reach, and PNA continues to focus on this in line with our Strategic Business Plan. Online Presence:

PNA’s Facebook following has grown 25% in the past 12 months, with 2467 followers (as of

15/09/17), and continues to be a key vehicle for communication with our members and to

facilitate connections between members.

Posts on our Facebook page can reach over 3000 people, with an average of around 1000

people. This wide reach will ensure quick communication of news and allow for strong

promotion of new developments at PNA.

PNA’s website has had similar traffic in 2017 as in 2016, with over 6000 visits to each of the

Winter Competition Ladders page and the Development Courses page, to give two examples.

Web traffic across the year spiked in the lead up to the STS Association Championships and

towards Finals Rounds in the Winter Competition with 5000 page visits in a month at its peak.

News articles posted on the PNA Website are automatically shared on the Facebook page to

ensure efficiency in communication, and the site pages are regularly updated with competition

ladders, school holiday course details and important information.

A new addition to the PNA website towards the end of the 2017 Winter Competition was the

Forum section of the site, where a space has been set up to facilitate knowledge sharing and

improve development of umpiring and coaching at PNA. There are currently 25 registered

users of the forum, with this expected to grow significantly in 2018 as the service is refined and

shared more widely.

In addition to some brand improvements, an email newsletter from the Executive Officer was

Weekly results during the winter season are still published in The West Australian and The

Sunday Times for those members who prefer this format.

We have a strong relationship with local community newspapers, and have continued to

share big celebrations or concerns at PNA to our members and neighbours this way.

Any feedback on what you would like to see added to PNA’s website or newsletter can be sent to [email protected] to ensure that our services fit your needs as a member. We can also tailor sponsor promotions through our online media, for any interested sponsors. A big thank you to all who have contributed to both the promotion of Perth Netball Association’s activities in 2017 and to quick and efficient distribution of news to our members.
