I am humbled by the fact that Craft Lake City® is entering its 10th year as an organization. I created the DIY Festival® in 2009 with the help of numerous volunteers, 72 local artisans, 2,000 attendees and a dozen musical acts in downtown Salt Lake City. It quickly became apparent that this event could play a major role in growing and elevating Utah’s creative culture. Today the DIY Festival attracts 20,000+ attendees over three days, 250+ local artisans, craft foodies, vintage vendors and DIY engineers, over 50 bands on two stages and local food trucks. Our event has become a small business incubator and catalyst for entrepreneurs to sell their handmade wares or prototype their science and tech projects with the public.

Craft Lake City experienced major growth in 2017. Our year-round educational workshops increased in frequency, attendance and revenue. Our outreach efforts and community partnerships reached and fostered relationships with more diverse communities across the valley. We created and hired for multiple new staffing positions. We incorporated new programs and

services into the DIY Festival which include Kid Row, live DIY demonstrations, artisan workshops, STEM workshops, the Ask a Scientist program and the Parenting Lounge furnished by IKEA. We expanded the DIY Festival Inclusion Program, launched an Artisan Scholarship and Mentor Program and we moved and improved the VIP Lounge.

We look forward to sustaining and improving upon our growth, celebrating our 10th Annual DIY Festival, fostering community inclusion, supporting and elevating local makers and inspiring folks to seek out their own avenues of creative fulfillment, appreciation or entrepreneurship.

Thank you for your continued support,

Angela H. Brown Executive Director

Craft Lake City, in collaboration with The Center for the Living City and The Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, curates a seasonally rotating, outdoor art exhibition for the Salt Lake community. Together, our goal is to beautify, enrich and enliven downtown Salt Lake City spaces through a walkable outdoor gallery titled Celebration of the Hand, which utilizes permanent steel frames known as “plakats” (the German word for billboard).

When Abraham was selected to be one of the DIY Festival’s first Kid Row Artisans, he began earnestly painting to increase his inventory. Abraham became so focused on his work leading up to the Festival that he painted all summer long, placing typical summertime activities on the backburner. Abraham learned a lot while painting, mostly how much hard work it takes to be an artist. As a result, Abraham is proud of his improved painting skills and the confidence he gained as an artist leading up to the Festival.

Abraham comes from an artistic family who all banded together to help him

prepare for the Festival. His sister became his social media manager and web designer, while his father, a full time artist himself, became his artistic advisor, helping him to refine and elevate his work. Abraham's entire family supported his efforts throughout the summer, by doing anything they needed to do to help him prepare for the Festival.

At the end of it all, Abraham considers his DIY Festival experience a success. He sold many of his paintings, met a lot of amazing people and received multiple requests for commissions.

“Abraham created the most beloved painting at the Festival of Craft Lake City’s favorite four legged friend, Hondo. Kid Row really opened our eyes to the artistic excellence of local youth and we look forward to seeing what they bring to the Festival next year.”

Local band Conquer Monster is a DIY Festival triple threat! They performed on the Festival’s main stage, they were DIY Engineer exhibitors in the STEM Building and they taught a STEM Workshop on circuit bending showing others how to create their own musical instruments out of obsolete electronics. Their out of this world 8-bit electronic sounds are generated from DIY modified synthesizers and obsolete electronics, old and new, including rotary telephones, Nintendo Game Boys, Atari’s, Dance Dance Revolution controllers, old computers, toys and more.

Conquer Monster band members include Joshua Faulkner and Daniel Romero. Faulkner has a degree in electrical engineering and currently teaches high school math. Romero has a degree in applied mathematics and computer science. Both Faulkner and Romero are fascinated with electronics and want to inspire and teach others how to experiment with everyday electronics. Their objectives for exhibiting in the

DIY Festival STEM Building, teaching and performing are to share the hands-on experience of working with these technologies, to highlight the creative side of STEM, to get into deeper conversations with the community about electronics and eventually teach their own community STEM programming.

Conquer Monster is currently working on a new concept album and has recently released a new music video on YouTube.

A STEM STORY: CONQUER MONSTER JOSHUA FAULKNER AND DANIEL ROMERODIY FESTIVAL PERFORMERS, STEM EXHIBITORS AND WORKSHOP FACILITATORS

“It is so great to see the nostalgic response from older generations regarding older electronics and intrigue from kids who are getting hands-on”. - Daniel Romero.

“As an educator, getting kids involved in STEM is important. We live in an age where the internet and technology is at our fingertips. It makes it easier to get kids excited about STEM careers when the entrance to STEM showcases how art can complement it.” - Joshua Faulkner

The colorful work of Ella Mendoza brought vibrancy to a shaded corner of Craft Lake City’s 9th Annual DIY Festival. A self-taught artist originally from Lima, Peru, Mendoza’s illustrations are inspired by their personal experiences and themes of liberation and healing. “Growing up in Utah as a mixture of my identities has been challenging but also an eye-opening experience,” said Mendoza. “My art has become my own visual representation of my freedom.”

Mendoza was selected as one of five first-time DIY Festival vendors to participate in Craft Lake City’s inaugural Artisan Scholarship and Mentor Program. They attended a training workshop, earned waived participation fees, and received individual mentorship from seasoned jewelry artisan and business guru,

Tif Blue of Peach Treats. Blue offered Mendoza valuable guidance to help prepare for a successful DIY Festival, and the partnership proved to be mutually beneficial. “This experience sparked my creativity,” explained Blue. “I see things in a new light. I feel like I learned as much as the Scholar did.”

At the conclusion of the Festival, Mendoza’s business, ellita, had successfully met its sales goals. Now, Mendoza plans to pay it forward to other artists in the community. “I try to be intentional about sharing skills and resources with other folks in my community,” explained Mendoza, “especially folks like myself who are queer and migrants and people of color.”

Thank you, Tif and Ella!
