Dear Friends,

2017 was another year of change and renewal for CASA Nashville.

We welcomed several new and exciting faces at CASA through our new volunteer advocate training as well as the addition of several key staff members. Brenda Thompson, an Advocate Supervisor for over 20 years retired, and while we miss her expertise and compassion, we are excited for her new season. Reflecting on our changes through this past year has made me ever so grateful for the supportive community we have in you.

In the last several years, we’ve seen as many as 800 children in foster care pass through the Davidson County Juvenile Court. With the growth of Nashville on the rise, we unfortunately don’t anticipate that number lowering any time soon. These children are our community’s most vulnerable youth. They have been abused, neglected and abandoned. CASA provides much needed professionally trained and dedicated volunteer advocates to ensure that these children have a voice.

Last year, thanks to the support of hundreds of generous donors, and the incredible dedication and selflessness of 177 Volunteers, was able to provide 282 children with a CASA Volunteer Advocate. These Advocates stay with their child every step of the way, from the beginning of the court process until they are placed in a safe, stable, permanent home.

A child represented by a CASA Advocate:

• Is more likely to find a safe, permanent home • Will receive more needed services while in the court system • Will spend less time in foster care • Will do better in school • Is less likely to be bounced from home to home

As a matter of fact, in 2017, 98% of recommendations regarding permanency (where a child will ultimately find a permanent family) made to the court by a CASA volunteer were accepted, , and 100% of children going through Davidson County Juvenile Court remained in their safe, stable home for at least six months after that placement.

Change and growth always brings new challenges and as we look forward to next year and years to come, we are determined and excited for the possibility to be able to serve ALL of the children who desperately need a voice.

Sincerely, Julieanna HuddleExecutive Director
