It’s my pleasure to present our annual Community Responsibility report.

While Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s corporate culture traits of Act Now, Reach Out and Let’s Talk are natural mindsets for successful community relations, 2017 was a year that offered plenty of opportunities for our Community Responsibility team to showcase these traits and create great impact.

Working hand in hand with strong, strategic partners, such as The Parade Company in Detroit, ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, and the United States Postal Service’s National Letter Carriers in their “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign, we aptly demonstrated our dedication to the health of Michigan communities while continuing to be a trusted, sought-after partner of choice.

We promoted a culture of corporate volunteerism throughout our enterprise, increasing volunteer numbers and service hours and providing invaluable support to diverse populations through events, such as the Michigan Special Olympics, Michigan Senior Olympics, Metro Detroit Youth Day and Flint mobile nutrition distributions.

When catastrophic hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria hit, our team quickly connected with partners to get much needed resources to impacted communities in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

On behalf of the team, we hope you enjoy this report that highlights our many efforts in support of the business goals, cultural values and the social mission of Blue Cross and Blue Care Network.

“Giving back to our communities has been at the forefront of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s values and traditions since our inception almost 80 years ago,” said Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO. “We’re proud to join the efforts of inspiring initiatives, programs and events that focus on the health and welfare of everyone across our great state.”

Blue Cross has been committed to Michigan citizens and communities for nearly 80 years. As a homegrown company, we truly care about the residents — our friends, neighbors and co-workers. Our community outreach helps us demonstrate our passion — beyond health insurance — by investing in organizations, events and programs that promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles, elevate quality access to health care, address unique health needs of diverse populations and help create healthy, sustainable communities overall.

Corporate contributionsPossibly the most universally familiar community relations investment, corporate contributions are the financial gifts we make to organizations that share our goals and vision of healthy communities. Blue Cross’ Community Responsibility department administers our annual, charitable dollars through management of statewide, regional budgets.

In-kind donationsEach year, Blue Cross contributes in-kind items and services to communities throughout Michigan. Community Responsibility is the conduit for this function, working directly with departments that have items to donate, then finding interest and need within communities through our many stakeholder relationships. In 2017, the Community Responsibility team facilitated thousands of charitable gifts, including giveaways, printing and design services, meeting space, office equipment, office supplies, office furniture, clothing items and corporate event tickets.

In 2017, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan

and Blue Care Network contributed $2,923,953

to 579 statewide, community initiatives.

$528,766 was given to 133

programs committed to improving the health

of Michigan residents.

$512,249 was given to 158

programs that support wellness needs

in diverse populations.

$455,856 was given to 137

initiatives that support access to

quality health care.

Communities across Texas (part of hurricane relief efforts)

Communities across Puerto Rico (part of hurricane relief efforts)

Hurricane reliefAs catastrophic weather decimated parts of the nation this year with hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, Blue Cross responded quickly. Together, the corporation and its work-force donated more than $100,000 to relief efforts.

Blue Cross’ Community Responsibility team led efforts to facilitate and direct donations to the weather-ravaged regions. Corporate contributions totaled $30,000, while Blue Cross and subsidiary employees collected another $64,500.

“Employees have been amazingly generous in the donations they’ve made through the dedicated portal set up with the Red Cross,” said Suzanne Miller Allen, director of Community Responsibility. “We established the portal right after Harvey hit Texas, but with the other storms following so quickly, we left it open to give people a trusted option through which to make donations to all affected areas.”

Blue Cross also donated 1,412 surplus cases of water that had been stored in our Lyon Meadows warehouse. This bottled water — almost 34,000 units — was donated to impacted communities in Texas and Puerto Rico.

Blue Cross proudly participates in national disaster relief efforts when needs arise. This year was a little more personal. While disaster struck outside of Michigan, one of Blue Cross’ subsidiary companies, Tessellate, has employees who live and work in Puerto Rico and were among those directly affected by Hurricane Maria.

A key element and top priority of Community Responsibility is relationship-building. In addition to investing in healthy community programs and events, it’s important to cultivate strong, trusted relationships with influential community stakeholders and members. This approach ensures that we actively engage and listen to our community stakeholders.

Strategic partnerships and sponsorships Through strategic partnerships and sponsorships, our team engages with like-minded community organizations on programs and events that encourage healthy lifestyles and support a culture of wellness throughout Michigan. These partnerships give Blue Cross visibility within communities, promote our key wellness messages and showcase our commitment to sustainable, core cities. Many provide volunteer and participation opportunities for our employees and family members.

Distinguished Warriors Mel Larson (left) and James Settles Jr. (right), are pictured here with Blue Cross President and CEO Daniel J. Loepp.

Two Blue Cross board members among Distinguished Warriors honored Blue Cross was a presidential sponsor of the annual Salute to Distinguished Warriors event in March, which boasted striking tributes, stirring speeches and standing ovations for Blue Cross board members Mel Larsen and James “Jimmy” Settles Jr., and Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, all honorees. The event was hosted by the Urban League of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan. Blue Cross President and CEO Daniel J. Loepp was honorary chair.

“I’m extremely proud that two of the Distinguished Warriors we honor to-night are Blue Cross board members,” Loepp told the crowd. “People like Mel and Jimmy are the reason that getting involved and standing for our communities is engrained in our DNA at Blue Cross.”

Music and banking pioneer Don Davis, and former state legislator Daisy Elliott were recognized posthumously.

“Engagement with the Urban League is another way Blue Cross can help deliver positive impacts in our communities,” Loepp said. “We’re trying to author the next great chapter in the story of Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Great things happen when we get together with organizations that feel the same way we do.”

Pedaling with a Purpose inspires kids to ride bikesIn the spring of 2017, 247 fourth graders from Emmet County pedaled from Spring Lake Park to the Oden State Fish Hatchery and back with educational stops along the way. The event, co-sponsored by Blue Cross, was part of the Top of Michigan Trails Council’s Kids’ Biking Initiative. Called Pedaling with a Purpose, the goal was to inspire every fourth grader in Emmet County to ride the trails as part of their regular outdoor activity.

The Trails Council focuses on building world-class, nonmotorized transportation and recreation opportunities for thousands of people in Northern Lower Michigan.

“During my 27 years teaching, I witnessed the decline in how active kids were in their everyday lives, as well as the related rise in youth body weight and stress-induced health challenges,” said Cindy Okerlund, Pedaling with a Purpose founder and Kids’ Biking Initiative youth program coordinator. “I’m thrilled that Blue Cross has become a partner in this program, knowing we share the same goal of encouraging youth to adopt healthy behaviors — like a love of biking.”

Richard Poplar of Flint was so thrilled with his new VSP glasses that he requested a picture with Blue Cross representatives Jill Greenlee, left, and Sarah Rose.

VSP and Blue Cross help underinsured Flint residents see more clearly

Blue Cross, in partnership with vision provider VSP, brought VSP’s mobile eye clinic to Flint, Michigan, on May 30, 2017, to provide comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses at no cost to underinsured residents.

VSP Mobile Eyes — a VSP Global® Eyes of Hope® program — deploys three, deluxe mobile eye care clinics to communities around the nation to deliver services to the underinsured. Its fully equipped, self-contained vehicles include state-of-the-art equipment to perform full eye exams and craft single lens glasses on-site.

Doctors administered 28 comprehensive eye exams and dispensed 28 pairs of single-lens glasses. In addition, they sent four bifocal prescriptions to the VSP lab and gave 40 eye exam certificates to residents who couldn’t get to the mobile clinic that day.

Employees donated 7,000 nonperishable food items to Stamp Out Hunger

For the third year in a row, Blue Cross and BCN employees participated in the largest, single-day food drive in the United States.

Only this year, Blue Cross turned the National Letter Carrier Association’s Stamp Out Hunger Day into a two-week, statewide event that generated more than 7,000 food items for

Michigan residents. And, instead of setting the items on their doorsteps for mail carriers to pick up, employees dropped off donations at designated collection areas in all Blue Cross’ facilities. The initiative was led by Community Responsibility, the Federal Employee Program and Joint Programs at Blue Cross and BCN.

The United Postal Service’s NLCA’s May food drive campaign began 25 years ago to refill food pantry shelves often depleted following the typical, generous giving seen during the winter holiday months. Today, hunger remains a real issue throughout most U.S. communities, so the effort to resolve food insecurity continues.

Food partners that benefitted from Blue Cross donations this year were Gleaner’s Community Food Bank (Southeast Michigan), Greater Lansing Food Bank (Lansing), Feeding America (Grand Rapids), Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (Flint) and Food Gatherers (Ann Arbor).

Swimmer Gary Hall Jr. earned 10 Olympic medals combined in 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Blue Cross, Olympic gold medalist support Upper Peninsula diabetes awareness

Olympic Gold Medalist Gary Hall Jr. joined Blue Cross and the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network at Swim Teal Lake on July 29, 2017. Blue Cross was a sponsor of this important fundraising event to strengthen diabetes care in the U.P., and provide prevention education and resources to people at risk of this disease. Since it began in 2004, this annual swim

across Teal Lake in Negaunee, Michigan, has raised more than $120,000 for diabetes-related programs.

“UPDON supports access to care and appropriate disease management practices of diabetes, and is a leader in raising awareness about how healthy lifestyles can reduce its burden,” said B.J. Puchala, senior community liaison for mid-Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. “We, at Blue Cross, understand that this is a critical, chronic disease issue in the Upper Peninsula and share UPDON’s awareness and prevention goals. We’re happy to be part of this inspiring event.”

Hall’s participation was personal. At 24, he was one of the fastest swimmers in the world, earning four medals in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. As he was gearing up for his second competition, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Hall didn’t let it slow him down. “Diabetes should not stand between a person and his dreams, or a healthy and fulfilling life,” he said. With medication, major lifestyle changes and a lot of hard work since his diagnosis, Hall went on to earn six more Olympic medals in 2000 and 2004 combined.

Also pictured are Michael Bulthuis, The Rapid manager of marketing and communications, and Todd Herring, Artprize director of Creative and Communications.

Blue Cross’ float, A Confident Life, debuted in America’s Thanksgiving Parade.

Blue Cross and The Rapid sponsored 10,000 free rides to ArtPrize venues

Blue Cross and The Rapid bus transit system gave 10,000 people passes for free transportation to venues across West Michigan to view art that dotted the city during the Grand Rapids annual ArtPrize competition, September 20 through October 8, 2017.

In addition, Blue Cross’ downtown headquarters served as one of the many venues that showcased art from around the world and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors. More than five hundred thousand dollars in prizes are awarded each year, which include a $200,000 prize awarded entirely by public vote and another $200,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts.

Blue Cross and our customer, The Rapid, joined forces to ensure people got adequate transportation to the many ArtPrize venues that included bars, restaurants, parks, vacant storefronts, theaters and offices.

“The Rapid is grateful to have teamed up with Blue Cross to support ArtPrize for another successful event in 2017,” said Michael Bulthuis, marketing and communications manager of The Rapid. “The partnership allows The Rapid and Blue Cross to continue their commitment to investing in the diversity of the ArtPrize festival and the City of Grand Rapids, and ensures that all of our residents and visitors have reliable transportation to all the outstanding opportunities our city has to offer.”

Blue Cross was well represented during the 91st America’s Thanksgiving Parade down Woodward Avenue in Detroit last November. Our new entry, A Confident Life, included giant fruits and vegetables and live animation.

Hailey Reighard, 10, from Lake Orion, who won the #MIKidsCan Turkey Day VIP Sweepstakes, rode atop the 110-foot long float, which was accompanied by more than 30 volunteers from Blue Cross.

“Blue Cross is proud to support an iconic event that brings the community together and shines a positive spotlight on our city and state to millions of people watching on Thanksgiving Day,” said Dan Loepp, president and CEO of Blue Cross and chair of the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation. “This is Blue Cross’ 34th year as a major parade sponsor.”

As this year’s #MIKidsCan contest winner, Reighard also got to hand off the game day football to the Detroit Lions and enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with her family in a Ford Field suite where they watched the holiday game. America’s Thanksgiving Parade is presented by Art Van.

Children with their stuffed animals enter MSU’s Blue Cross Teddy Bear Hospital.

Mock Teddy Bear Hospital helps children overcome fearsThe patients weren’t of the usual variety. Some were very hairy. Others had big ears or four legs. Even more had tails. They were all part of an event created by Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine, and sponsored by Blue Cross to help children overcome fears associated with interacting with health care providers.

On Saturday, September 16, 2017, children brought their favorite stuffed animals for checkups to the mock Blue Cross Teddy Bear Hospital at Michigan State University. The annual event was staffed by physicians and students of MSU’s College of Human Medicine. MSU is a large and longtime group customer of Blue Cross.

"This event is a special opportunity for MSU and Blue Cross to work together,” said Barbara Ball McClure, coordinator of Outreach & Engagement at MSU’s College of Human Medicine. “Our

experts in pediatric medicine and our MSU students — who are our future providers — create a fun, simulated hospital experience for kids in a way that isn't scary or intimidating.”

Each child and his or her stuffed animal was issued a special one-day Blue Cross card to show at each checkup station. Additionally, children and their parents and grandparents enjoyed face painting, music and dancing, activities with MSU athletes, balloon animals and healthy snacks.

Other partners included students from MSU’s College of Nursing, College of Education, Department of Kinesiology and the MSU Women’s Basketball team.

Blue Cross’ Community Responsibility department works with many trusted partners across Michigan who share our vision and goals of adopting healthy lifestyles and creating a culture of wellness. These relationships build our brand in communities across Michigan and strengthen our reputation with stakeholders who represent diverse groups and populations.

Community Advisory Councils In 2003, Blue Cross’ Community Responsibility reached out to statewide partners to assemble regional community advisory councils to meet on a regular basis. These councils bring together community leaders and advocates to discuss emerging community concerns, areas of need and opportunities for collaboration, and provide our Blue Cross community team with important feedback that helps us best use our resources to address community needs. We’ve found that through this ongoing collaboration, our partners most often become our advocates.

Each of Blue Cross’ nine councils met three times in 2017, convening representatives from community areas that include faith-based, cultural and community centers, business, nonprofit and grass-roots organizations, local government, health systems, multi-generational services, education and human services.

We presently have councils in the following markets: Greater Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Marquette, Great Lakes Bay (Saginaw, Bay, Midland counties), Macomb County, Greater Flint and Southeast Michigan.

Senior Advisory CommitteeCommunity Responsibility also facilitates Blue Cross’ Senior Advisory Committee. This group operates as a management-level advisory council to the Blue Cross board of directors. Its goal is to constructively enhance relationships between Blue Cross and Michigan's senior population.

In 2017, the committee was composed of one Blue Cross board liaison and 16 members representing the following organizations:

Corporate Volunteer Program and employee givingThis year, our employees continued to give generously of their time and resources in support of the many statewide communities where we work, live and play.

Statewide, Blue Cross had a total of 3,206 employees fulfill 3,474 volunteer opportunities. BCN had 538 employees volunteer for 49 opportunities. These numbers represent 45 percent of the Blue Cross workforce, and 31 percent of the BCN workforce.

Holiday drivesCommunity Responsibility organizes annual, statewide employee winter drives to support those in need during the holidays. This year, employees broke records with their generosity, donating an abundance of cold weather clothing and food that were delivered to community partners across the state.

Executive Volunteer ProgramBlue Cross’ Executive Volunteer Program is an extension of the corporate employee volunteer program, but with a specific goal of placing our senior leadership on the boards of statewide nonprofit organizations with whom we partner. Blue Cross leaders also are involved in our community work throughout the year. We spotlight two of these leaders below:

Cindy DionVice President of Business Efficiency and Continuous Improvement

Cindy Dion has served as a board member of the Southeast Michigan American Red Cross for more than five years. She said that the organization’s mission to shelter, feed and provide

emotional support to victims of disasters and aid military members, resonates deep within her heart.

“I have heard so many wonderful and touching stories — some from Blue Cross employees — of how the Red Cross has helped them or some of their family members in times of need,’’ she said. “It’s a pleasure helping to support such a worthwhile cause that consistently delivers service in a culturally competent manner. I am happy to be part of it.’’

After two years of service as a member of the March of Dimes board, Laurie Parmely is being appointed chairman. Laurie says she’s drawn to this organization because of its

mission. “It’s all about babies and moms,’’ she said. “I can’t think of a better cause to support than helping Michigan moms bring beautiful, healthy babies into the world.’’

In her new role, Parmely will lead the March of Dimes’ local efforts to reduce premature births and help Michigan moms deliver full-term, healthy babies.

“Unfortunately, Michigan still has one of the higher premature birth rates in the country,’’ Parmely said. “So, there’s still a great deal of work we can do.’’
