2017 Annual Report – Page 2

This may be my first year as Board Chair, but this is my fifth year serving as a member of the NH LAKES Board of Directors alongside so many thoughtful,

conscientious, and courageous volunteers. Over those five years, we’ve put our financial house in order, increased the number of people, like you, who have stepped up to support this important work, and accomplished much.

Annual reports provide an opportunity to take an honest look back on the fiscal year just finished (for NH LAKES, that’s

from April 1st to March 31st). We have not published an official annual report for a number of years. This year, on the 25th anniversary of our formation, we thought it important to rekindle this tradition, to pause and reflect on our accomplishments and recognize you and your critical support you have entrusted to NH LAKES.

This report is intended to give you a clear and accurate picture of our ongoing efforts to protect New Hampshire’s lakes for all to enjoy today and tomorrow.

It is an honor to do this work, and to join forces in this cause with outstanding partners from across the state like you. You inspire us. Thank you!

From the Chair…by Stuart Lord, Board Chair

FY 2017 HighlightsAdvocacy

• We did it! Together we got House Bill (HB) 1589 – the ‘Clean and Drain’ bill – to the Governor’s desk for her to sign into law. Following a unanimous voice vote in support of the bill in the House, the Senate voted likewise – all in favor. In mid-June, Governor Hassan signed HB 1589 into law! On January 1, 2017, that law went into effect.

• Governor Hassan declared June 2016 “Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Month.”

Education

• In its 15th year, the NH LAKES Lake Host Program staffed 102 boat ramps with 700+ Lake Hosts helping 80,000+ boaters stop the spread of invasive species.

• NH LAKES hosted its 23rd Lakes Congress – an annual education, training & networking event drawing a record-breaking 254 attendees.

• NH LAKES brought the Watershed Warrior activity circuit to 22 communities engaging 516 youth in hands-on activities discovering how to take action to help keep lakes healthy.

• Summer Youth Employment Program employed six students in Colebrook and five students in Laconia to perform lake stewardship activities in their communities.

• NH LAKES published “New Hampshire Lakes and YOU! A guide to clean, healthy & safe lakes.” This publication, also known as the “Lake Book,” is an update of one initially published in 2008.

• At 13 local lake association meetings, NH LAKES board and staff shared information to help enhance their lake protection efforts.

Organizational Development

• With a grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, NH LAKES board and staff dedicated this year to thinking strategically about the organization’s future. We spent the year listening to our stakeholders representing lakefront property owners, local lake associations, other statewide environmental organizations, and state agencies.

• NH LAKES thanked its current members and recruited new members at seven lakeside gatherings attended by 199 individuals throughout the state.

Lakes Leadership CircleThe Lakes Leadership Circle is comprised of NH LAKES supporters who annually contribute $1,000 or more.

During the summer of 2016, NH LAKES offered the Summer Youth Employment Program for Lake Protection (SYEP) in Colebrook and Laconia. Through this program, NH LAKES provides academically at-risk or financially disadvantaged high school students with part-time summer jobs geared toward protecting the lakes in their communities. The SYEP crews served as Lake Hosts, staffed the Watershed Warrior program and helped with other community-based projects.

The SYEP program in Laconia was funded by the Caswell Foundation Trust and the Laconia Conservation Commission. In addition to lake hosting and staffing Watershed Warrior programs, the Laconia crew conducted a shoreline clean-up and stenciled municipal storm drains with the “No Dumping – Drains to Lake” message.

In Colebrook, NH LAKES received grants from longtime program funder the Neil and Louise Tillotston Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation as well as from the New Hampshire Electric Co-Op Foundation. As part of the Colebrook SYEP, students participated in a three-day long career readiness training session provided by C.O.R.E Vocation Services. Dr. Bethany Bilodeau, C.O.R.E. trainer, reported that this training went particularly well this summer. She shared this feedback with us: “I was able to set up several tours of local businesses at night for the following days and this was very interactive for the students. Three actually received job offers and the hospital is working on internships for potentially two others. The students were fantastic, truly a great week!”

Thanks to grants from the Bea and Woolsey Conover Fund and the Wolfeboro Fund of the New

Hampshire Charitable foundation as well as the Peter H. and Susan R. Goodwin Fund, NH LAKES

was able to update and publish the ‘Lake Book.’ Developed to provide people like you with an understanding of lake ecology, the function of

watersheds, and the connections between lake quality and your activities in your home, on your property,

along the shoreline, and out on the lake itself.

Megan Hanna, NH LAKES staff, spent the summer helping youth learn how to take action as “Watershed Warriors” – keeping our lakes healthy for the next generation.
