Will Bullas “Hoppy…Wild and Woolie” Will Bullas attended Arizona State University on a scholarship and was majoring in art and drama when he was drafted and served in Vietnam. After returning from combat duty, he took up his art studies at the Brooks Institute of Fine Arts in Santa Barbara, California where he studied with master painter, Ray Strong. There he met his wife Claudia, who is also an artist.

Will is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, was elected to membership with the Knickerbocker Artists of New York in 1986, and is past president and continuing member of the Carmel Art Association since 1980. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Carmel Valley Art Association. In 2007, Will received the Mario Cooper and Dale Meyers Medal from the American Watercolor Society for his contributions to watercolor. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Luminary Award in 2013 from Arts Council for Monterey County.

Will Bullas makes fine art fun. This master of one-liners combines award winning artistic skills with a hilarious point of view, creating a refreshing and unexpected new way to enjoy fine art. His exhibit title was inspired by a line in a PBS murder mystery when one of the artist characters was asked “Are you still painting?” The artists’ reply was, “til I fall off the twig…” Will had a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in June 2015.

He is currently working on a biography about the artist. jomoratrust.com Of his piece, Peter says . "Often times we pass by items that appear to no longer have any use or value. Other times we relish that which is old for its steadfast longevity. Turning an eye to the surface of old cars - rust buckets - junkers - jalopies - provides an opportunity to discover new meaning in that which is no longer of use or value yet has earned the status of distinguished old age." Rolf Lygren “Potting Shed” A local artist of California’s Central Coast, Rolf Lygren works from his studio in Carmel Valley, as well as painting Plein Air scenes from around Monterey County and the Central Coast Region. The Central Coast region, from San Juan Bautista to King City, including the Monterey Coast, has provided a rich and stimulating environment for the development of the artist’s work. Monterey County offers a continuous wealth of engaging material that lends itself naturally to the artist’s creative expression. Rolf has found the study of Latino field workers and gardeners in nearby Salinas Valley to be an especially intriguing subject. The artist’s formal training began at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in art. Rolf has taught watercolor workshops in and around the Monterey Peninsula and has had solo and group exhibitions in Central California. The artist’s paintings are in collections through Northern and Southern California.

Christine Crozier “Pedernal”

Christine grew up in a very rural Marin County, California. Her free time was spent hiking in the local hills and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Never without a sketchbook, she focused on botanical drawings and landscape sketches. In her teens she studied traditional Chinese painting with landscapes again predominating. In 1979 she formed a decorative art company with several partners in San Francisco. They created faux finishes and hand painted wallpapers for clients throughout California. Several years later Christine and her husband, Jeff, also an artist, moved to the Monterey Peninsula where they formed their own company, Crozier Studios. The focus of their work became murals, trompe’loeil, and decorative artwork for residential and commercial projects and the health care industry. From 1987 through 1992 Christine taught a popular decorative painting workshop at Monterey Peninsula College. By this time Christine was working in oils and had developed a lush, colorful, impressionist style. Working full time as a fine artist Christine paints out in the open air whenever she can. "I still prefer to spend as much of my life as possible out of doors. The freshness and spontaneity that is necessary to plein-air painting carries over to my studio painting and keeps it from becoming stiff and overworked." Chris had a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in February 2016.

David Bindel “By the Sea” David has fond memories of his childhood, growing up in an artistic family. “My fond memories smell like oil paint. There is something about surrounding yourself with art that makes a house a home. The smell of oil paint lingered in our home through the years. More than Mom's fresh bread and apple pie, I love her. I love art. I love the smell of oil paint.”

In college, David took every art course available. Throughout his busy life with twelve restaurants, several businesses, three marriages, and five children, art was always a part of his business and homes. It is in his bloodline. His first daughter, known professionally as "Courtney Jordan" is an accomplished artist. After graduating from The Rhode Island Institute of Art, she has been using her talent in her paintings as well as her work as an interior designer for her L.A. based interior design team, Jordan Design Crew.

David’s restaurants were all about the art of food. Designing the ads, the decor, the menu, or a dish became the passion that drove him. In a venture with his first son, Dave Jr., they designed ad campaigns for a mobile billboard trucking company. It has always been about the art and design.

Today in his real estate career at Sotheby’s, David’s clients appreciate his skills in art and design. His brain is always envisioning creative ideas to create more beautiful spaces. He enjoys designing ads and photographing properties. He works with architects on plans and with owners and builders on materials. He has a knack for knowing how and what makes a property look good. It isn't always expensive — sometimes all it takes is a plant. David is inspired daily. Just like his Mom, he work in oils. Dale exhibited here in June 2014.

Dan Lester “Spots Before Its Eyes” Daniel Edward Lester (1938-2014) discovered his love for creating art later in life during a trip to the Sidney Museum of Art in Australia. The realization came after spending his childhood enjoying art but not being able to draw in proper proportion. “Here was art that impulsively captured all the senses without depending on proportion, and I said to myself, ‘I think I can do this.’” To Lester, the Aboriginal work has an authentic purpose and tells a story, usually of ancestors depicted as spirits. He incorporated color into his art and typically painted on a horizontal board surface.

Lester was a native of Santa Cruz County, where he was born and spent 76 years of his life. After attending local schools, he went to college at the University of Santa Clara and went on to enjoy a successful career in the real estate field. The artist and his wife Patricia lived on a tree-studded ranch in Aptos that included a 15-acre vineyard and a small olive grove, where Patricia still resides. His art studio, “the olive barn,” still sits among the olive trees. Lester’s neighbors at Pleasant Valley Vineyards aided in bringing the artist’s paintings and vineyard together by producing a number of fine wines from Lester’s vineyard and offering a designer series of six wines that featured Lester’s art on the labels.

Lester was excited to share his work at the Marjorie Evans Gallery. “I have done many great things in my life, had many wonderful experiences but the discovery in being able to create art has been most rewarding and has given me great delight in my later years. It is difficult to explain, but in few words, painting transcends the physical and has become a discovery in spirituality,” he said. Lester’s exhibit here was in March 2014, five months before he passed away.

George Dawnay “Sienese Girl” By working in oil and pastels, George Dawnay is able to portray the human body with amazing beauty, definition, and movement. His subtle landscapes produce a soft, ethereal feeling. He studied at the Florence Academy of Art for five years and spent a lot of time traveling around Europe. Dawnay’s commissioned work includes such names as John Paul Getty of London, the Princess of Corsini (Italy), and the Duke of Gloucester (U.K.). After studying at the Heatherly School in London with Joakin Zellis, he spent four years at the Florence Academy of Art, the last of those years working in and around Florence renovating frescoes. Recently Dawnay has been busy with commercial murals in San Francisco. He is represented locally by Westbrook Galleries in Carmel. Dawnay’s exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery was in October 2015.

Lilli-Anne Price “Hovering Heron”

Lilli-Anne has lived in the Monterey Peninsula for over 30 years. Her artistic journey with painting started 15 years ago, inspired by her horses in the landscapes of ever-changing light in their pastures that surround my home in The Steinbeck Hills. She studied with The Carmel Adult School for 5 years, taking classes in Still Life, Figure Drawing, and Plein Air Painting. She uses a palette knife and a unique palette of textured colors, raw shapes, and forms to bring her paintings to life. She is a Signature member and the 2016 Treasurer of the Monterey Bay Peninsula Plein Air Association (MBPAPA). She is also a signature member of Carmel Valley Art Association. Lilli-Anne’s exhibit here was part of the Monterey Bay Peninsula Plein Air Association’s Marjorie Evans Gallery exhibit in November 2015 and she will have a solo show coming up in 2017.

Jacquelyn Coleman “Carmel City Hall”

Jacquelyn Coleman’s approach to watercolor has its roots in the California style of watercolor painting, part of the American Scene or Regionalist movement, which swept across the United States during the mid-twentieth century. She spent many of the early years of her career painting on location with renowned watercolorist George Post, documenting scenes and activities of everyday life in San Francisco. In the early 1970s, as a mother of five children living in Orinda, California, Jacquelyn painted throughout the San Francisco Bay Area while also playing a prominent role in the Bay Area arts community. Soon after, she and her family moved to Connecticut where, painting with Charles Reid, her work became focused on figure studies at Studio 3 in Westport. Her figure painting, Lady in Profile, was one of three figure paintings that earned her a signature membership in the American Watercolor Society (AWS) in 1981. Some 500 artist’s worldwide have been selected for this honor including Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Dong Kingman, E. Raymond Kinstler, among others. In 1984, she returned to San Francisco, living on Telegraph Hill for four years before relocating to Carmel Highlands and now the quiet beauty of Napa. Jacquelyn was invited as a member of a team representing U.S. and U.K. watercolorists in Beijing, China in 1993, and has painted for several summers in Italy and France. Jacquelyn continues her love of painting and her recent work is influenced by the natural beauty of the Central California coastline and Carmel. Her paintings of the Carmel Mission and the Carmel Library have been selected as representative images of the two Carmel landmarks. Jacquelyn exhibited here in September 2011 and 2013.

Belle James “Twilight Lunaria” You might call Belle an artist since birth, as her parents met at the prestigious Otis College of Art and Design, a premier Art and Design School in Los Angeles. Her own impressive collegiate career included the University of Colorado, Los Angeles City College, Cal State University Los Angeles, and Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan where she studied sumi-e (Japanese art of monochromatic ink painting). Having traveled around the globe, she did many sketches along the way. These books are still often sources of inspiration. As Plein Air artists go looking for inspiration outdoors, Belle wanders her home and looks out the windows for ideas, seeing patterns and color and abstracting their essence. Some artists that she most admires are J. M. W. Turner, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Jasper Johns, and Keith Lindberg. She believes that you will see their influences on her canvasses. Her diverse experience includes designing and building exhibits for clients and traveling exhibits sponsored by the Smithsonian while concurrently owning one of the largest stock photo houses (American Stock Photos) on the West Coast. Locally, she had a gallery in Carmel called Belle Arts for several years and then opened a gift shop for another ten years.

Jeanne Marino “Follow Us” Photographer Jeanne Marino says that she was drawn to photography since grade-school. “It is accessible, beautiful, and expressive. When I saw a movie of the work of Edward Weston, I dreamed of learning more. Delightfully I moved to the Monterey Peninsula, and found the Center for Photographic Art, Carmel. CPA offers me an avenue that nurtures my creativity. As a docent I appreciate the opportunity of learning directly from the exhibiting photographer when we gather as a group for the docent lectures. It is such an intimate and insightful experience. I am thrilled to meet and know today’s photographers who continue to shape this incredible art form.”

“I believe that art should be explored, shared and touched. That is the embodiment of CPA. I believe in CPA, their mission and the people involved who believe in photography and in the artists they present. I feel lucky to be a part of a group that proudly follows in the footsteps of a long-lived and impressive community made up of the most renowned figures in photography. I also appreciate that CPA encourages learning and exploring through the many workshops that are within reach of the community and students. My docent and volunteer time may be a small contribution, but I am happy to do what I can to help CPA thrive.” One of CPA’s most energetic volunteers, Jeannie Marino can usually be found at the heart of any exciting CPA event. Jeannie serves as a member of the CPA Development Committee. She worked as a volunteer at the 2010 CPA auction. Jeannie was a sponsor for the Kim Kauffman exhibition earlier this year.

Matthew Olyphant “Stop”

Matthew Olyphant is a California based artist. His works are extremely visually engaging and manifest from his personal experiences, travels, and life events. His paintings explore the tensions that often exist between humans and their surrounding environment. Matthew uses environment, memories, thoughts, and emotion to create his visual pictures. Composition, based largely on shape and movement, plays a role in creating that sense of tension and harmony. The paintings are layered with content and color, spiky lines covering dramatic conflicting colors, misspelled words and phrases shared space with vague scratchy characters and cityscapes that come alive. Color and texture function to reveal mood and gain a reaction by the viewer. Relationships among the colors suggest harmonies and discord among people and their environment. Matthew’s paintings have received national and international recognition and are displayed throughout the world, with works displayed in the United States, London England, and Singapore. Matthew had a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in March 2016.

Matthew Olyphant “Yellow City”

Matthew will have a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in March 2016.

George Rodrigue “You Can’t Drown the Blues”

This silkscreen print is donated by The Estate of George Rodrigue and the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts (GRFA) through local Carmel resident Valerie Schad. The Foundation advocates the importance of the arts in the development of our youth. GRFA encourages the use of art within all curriculums and supports a variety of art educational programs. In 2009 George Rodrigue formed GRFA as a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. Over the years, Rodrigue assisted numerous non-profits, not only in the arts, but also humanitarian organizations, disaster relief, animal welfare and others. But today, the Rodrigue family and Rodrigue Foundation's primary focus is to expose children to education through the arts, hoping to inspire in others an early and on-going creative passion similar to George's. Born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana, artist George Rodrigue (1944 – 2013) is best known for his Blue Dog paintings, which catapulted him to worldwide fame in the early 1990s. His art studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette followed by the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California gave him a foundation that spawned one of the greatest success stories in southern art. Rodrigue’s work is represented by his own galleries in Carmel, Lafayette, Louisiana, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Bert Ihlenfeld “Headlights I and Headlights II”

A native of Germany, Bert studied graphic design and photography at the Berlin Academy of Art. He was art director at a San Diego advertising agency before starting his own design firm. From San Diego Bert moved to San Francisco and later to Pacific Grove where his home and studio are now located.

During his successful career as a graphic designer, Bert applied his photographic talents primarily to commercial projects. He then focused on exotic travel and botanical images. After his move to Pacific Grove he specialized in digital macro photography resulting in many group and one man shows featuring his “Metamorphosis” series. After early experimentation with prisms, broken glass and mirrors, Bert started to explore the colorful reflections of late model automobile headlights. Intrigued by the polished array of precision mirrors and glistening high-tech chrome reflectors, he shot hundreds of headlights in parking lots, in dealer show rooms, on driveways and in city streets. “Photography has always fascinated me. But since shooting headlights, I became obsessed with documenting their magic and powerful visual effects. Every day I discover new and exciting reflections, from realistic mirrored images to brilliant color abstractions. I am hooked on headlights.”

This features a selection of two images shot with a small Sony Cybershot digital camera set to macro mode and enlarged up to four feet.

Bert is a member of the ImageMakers of the Monterey Peninsula and has been on the advisory board of the Center for Photographic Art for over a decade. His creative work is represented in corporate and private collections in the United States and Europe. He has 38 large format botanical color photographs in the permanent collection of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. To see more of Bert’s work, visit his website bertihlenfeld.com.

Patricia Qualls “Excavating our Genius” Patricia Qualls grew up on a modest farm in the Tennessee Valley, eventually finding her way to California where she now resides. Patricia has an executive MBA from Pepperdine University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Having discovered her artistic passion, Patricia is now a highly recognized expressionist artist, working full time in her art studio in Carmel Valley. Throughout her life, abstract expressionist painter, Patricia Qualls, has developed a deep curiosity for life-long learning and individuality. Using canvas, color and powerful brush strokes, Qualls studies the relationship and tension between external influence and self-expression, questioning how society enables or suppresses individuality and raw inherent abilities. Much of her work has been influenced by this curiosity and is core to her work. Her inspiration often stems from her deep personal struggles as a child and then later in life helping others, including her own child, navigates the many obstacles facing those who learn differently. Teaching individuals through one dimension, she argues, may help with standardization but for those who don’t fit the stereotype it can greatly impair confidence and ultimately curiosity and creativity. Patricia had a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in June 2013.

Vanessa Martin “Seaweed Floating”

After years living next to the Monterey Bay, Vanessa is constantly inspired and intrigued by the changing light, water, and land. Subconsciously the forces of nature feed her senses and she creates from that life force. Vanessa’s paintings capture a moment in time that lie within her photographic memory. Her images are about the "meeting of land and sea." Birth, death, rebirth, and renewal. Painting allows and encourages her to expand my creative, spontaneous, spiritual, and intuitive side. It lets her be in the flow of the moment. She enjoys creating a mood with color, texture, depth, and something that gives the viewer a luminous sense of mystery, complexity, and uplifts the spirit. Vanessa’s paintings create joy, remove stress, and expand her perception of herself and the world. She currently paints in her studio overlooking the Monterey Bay, which is her primary inspiration. Vanessa’s exhibit was shown here in August 2016.

Debra Achen “Speed of Light: Ballpark” Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Debra’s passion for art began at a very young age. She majored in Art Education at Edinboro State University before moving to California and completing her BA in Visual Arts / Communications at the University of California, San Diego. For a number of years Achen’s creative medium was paint. Then the gift of a digital camera rekindled her love of photography. This coincided with a move to the scenic Monterey Peninsula, an environment that provides great inspiration for her work today. Debra says “When I take my camera to a beautiful natural setting or city street scene, my eye often wanders to some small element or pattern within the bigger picture. I am attracted to the underlying structure of things, to the design and materials, and to the way the forces of nature – Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Gravity, Light, and Time – all imprint the material world with their magic. Some of my images border on the abstract. By ‘extracting, isolating, or separating out’ a certain element of a subject, it becomes simplified to components of visual form. My intent is to capture the more fundamental or innate essence of material objects.”

Laureen Weaver “Wildfire” Laureen works with acrylic and oil mediums with various themes other than wine, including landscapes, skyscapes, contemporary, still-life, horses, and golf courses. Primarily a self-taught painter, Laureen is fascinated by moody, cloud, and sun-filled skies as they are reminiscent of her childhood. She uses a “broken brush” which is a beat up brush that helps give her the greatest effects to her paintings. Her other favorite tools are spatulas and palette knives that generate a rich effect. Her favorite colors to use in her paintings are orange and red.

Laureen’s art career didn’t start until 2009 when she went on a life changing art trip with an art group to the south of France. After returning, she worked to improve her art whenever she could and used her paintings to raise money for local charities in the community. Laureen feels inspiration from everyday life and experiences and believes her paintings can capture a thousand words and more, telling a story of the community and the people that live there. Laureen exhibited in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in April 2015.

Will Bullas “See No Weevil…” Will Bullas attended Arizona State University on a scholarship and was majoring in art and drama when he was drafted and served in Vietnam.

Laureen Weaver “The Outlaw Josey Wales”

Laureen works with acrylic and oil mediums with various themes including landscapes, skyscapes, contemporary, still-life, horses, and golf courses.

Christine Crozier “Winter Fields”

The freshness and spontaneity that is necessary to plein- air painting carries over to my studio painting and keeps it from becoming stiff and overworked." Chris had a solo exhibit in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in February 2016.

Thierry Thompson “Allen Way” While Thierry Thompson once designed, fabricated and engineered sophisticated open-wheeled formula race cars internationally, Master Fine Artist Thierry Thompson has been painting professionally for over 40 years. The artist has an unequalled sense of design and aesthetics, which is reflected in his creations. Thierry and Bev Thompson’s Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery is located in the "Sixth Avenue Art District" of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Just a few steps away from the azure blue Pacific Ocean, Carmel's famed romantic white sand beaches and the majesty of California's Pacific coast. As Thierry states "The Monterey Peninsula, Big Sur, Point Lobos and Carmel-by-the-Sea are the greatest meeting of land and water on the face of the earth. The Peninsula and the surrounding region are breathtaking and equally inspiring". "As a fine artist, I communicate visually with my creations. The object of my art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of a greater intensity. To represent not the outward superficial appearance of my subject matter, but their concealed significance. It is in my created imagery that I hope to reveal the evidence which is embedded in the artworks two-dimensional visage". Thierry exhibited in the Marjorie Evans Gallery in August 2011.
