MARCH & APRIL 2017 WELCOMING SPRING! Why Not Try Tai Chi? People often wonder why we have tai chi classes available free of charge for our cancer patients, and why our physicians are recommending you to attend! The principles of tai chi are rooted in eastern philosophy, but it has become widely accepted by western medicine. At its heart tai chi is a martial art that seeks to balance brute force with soft defense. There are no aggressive movements involved just slow and deliberately controlled motions that make tai chi an ideal physical and mental exercise. The emphasis on peacefully and mindfully dealing with forces outside of your control makes tai chi particularly helpful for anyone impacted by cancer. Medical evidence-based research shows that tai chi: Can reduce falls and improve sleep in the elderly. Bolsters quality of life (QOL) and increases exercise tolerance in heart failure patients. Strengthens physical functioning among people with rheumatoid arthritis. Improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels in people with hypertension. Increases bone mineral density. Reduces symptoms in fibromyalgia patients and improves their quality of life. Improves shoulder muscle strength in breast cancer survivors Increases human immunity against tumor formation in lung cancer survivors. The last bullet point referenced a study in lung cancer patients that included a group who practiced tai chi for 16 weeks and a control group who did not. The control group saw an unfavorable reduction in T-cells (important cells that support the immune system) and an increase in cortisol (a stress- related hormone). The survivors who practiced tai chi for 16 weeks showed no reduction in T-cell count and no increase in cortisol levels. Based on these results, researchers reported that tai chi may help to balance cellular immunity and thus increase immunity against cancer. Further research into this possibility is still ongoing, but the overall benefits cannot be denied! Scientists believe that the positive research findings in patients is due to three physiological benefits – gentle aerobic conditioning, teaching the body and mind to relax by improving breath control and mental focus, and improving balance and flexibility. We encourage you to come and try our class each week – no experience is necessary just a desire to help yourself feel better. SAVE THE DATE! Join us on Thursday March 16th at 6 pm at CityArtsFactory in Orlando for the opening of the exhibition ART MEETS MEDICINE. The exhibit features amazing artwork created by our patients, caregivers, and family members including interpretations of protons and other unexpected ways medicine can be beautiful. With the help of our Community Relations department, art store Sam Flax, and other generous philanthropists, each year we provide the community with an exhibit of new artwork created by our Arts in Medicine program. The exhibit runs through Friday April 14th. We invite you to come and share in the enjoyment of all the pieces created, and have an opportunity to meet some of the artists and read their biographies. Some art pieces will be available for sale at the show and will help us continue to provide and expand this worthwhile program.

Nobody expects to hear that unwanted diagnosis. It can shake our sense of security and the ways we have made meaning in our lives. Although negative reactions to such news are very understandable, strengthening our emotional resiliency allows us to face these challenges with courage and good humor. In this 4-session workshop, we will explore ways to express and reframe our emotional reactions, capitalize on our existing strengths and develop new insights on our experience through contemplative techniques, specific exercises, and a sharing of wisdom and experience with fellow travelers on life’s sometimes rocky path. 3/1: Me: BC (Before Cancer) and AD

(After Diagnosis)3/8: The Resiliency Factor: My Enduring

Strengths3/15: Why Me? What Now? Exploring Meaning and Purpose3/22: Cultivating Gratitude and Hope

F JOURNAL WRITING: A TOOL FOR GROWTH AND CREATIVITY

Keeping a journal is a powerful process that appears deceptively simple. The mere act of putting thoughts and emotions into words, and putting those words onto paper, can transform our deepest feelings and inner experiences into realistic goals and actions. Journaling helps us develop our insight, intuition and contemplative skills, and can serve as a way to release the stress associated with many of life’s challenges. Class meets 4/12, 4/19 and 4/26.

Thank You!Our program of support services, wellness, education, social connections, information assistance, and referral is provided free of charge thanks to the amazing efforts

of caring and supportive individuals and companies dedicated to help fight the battle against cancer and ease the burden of all those whose lives have been impacted.

Support Services Sponsors

Co-founded by Elaine Lustig and Sheila Solomon in 1993, Women Playing For T.I.M.E.® is a volunteer organization dedicated to making a positive impact on women facing cancer. Since its inception, WPFT has raised over $10 million through signature golf

and tennis tournaments and a variety of other events throughout the year. Funds directly benefit cancer Technology, Immediate diagnosis, Mammography,

and Education (T.I.M.E.) at UF Health Cancer Center – Orlando Health.

Did you know that community-owned hospitals provide 95 percent of all vital but often unprofitable

health services? As Central Florida’s only community-owned hospital, Orlando Health reinvests all available

revenues into programs, equipment, facilities, and medical staff. Since 1918, we have been committed to providing the best quality healthcare for our region

and citizens. The Orlando Health Foundation is proud to honor the 1918 Society - an association of individuals deeply interested in the strategic priorities of Orlando

Health and in ensuring the availability of quality healthcare services. Members make philanthropic gifts to help provide leading-edge patient care and services, fund critical expansion needs and purchase the latest technology and equipment – all of which are vital to keeping pace with our community’s growing needs

and the rapid advances in medicine.
