The local Knights of Columbus Annunciation Assembly #2833
sponsored a citizenship essay contest to give students the
opportunity to define the importance of religious freedom. All
students in the eighth grade at Annunciation Catholic School
were eligible to participate.
Each contestant wrote an essay on the theme of The
Importance of Religious Freedom and our role as
Catholics. The winners are:
First Place: Natalina Putrino
Second Place: Mark Rossbach
Third Place: Luke Hammond
These winners were announced and recognized on November
11, 2016 at the Knights of Columbus sponsored Veterans’ Day
Program held at the school. Each essay participant received a
certificate recognizing their involvement in this contest. The
winners received an additional certificate recognizing their
achievement and a cash prize ($100 First Place, $75 Second
Place, and $50 Third Place) provided by the Knights of
Columbus Annunciation Assembly #2833.
The First Place Winner’s essay, written by Natalina Putrino, will move forward to the Knights of
Columbus’ state-level competition where she will compete for an opportunity to participate at the
national and international levels.
The Annunciation Assembly is the Patriotic Degree of the local Knights of Columbus. The primary
purpose of the Patriotic Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism and to encourage active Catholic
citizenship.

Evening Under the Stars Success!
We thank all who attended our beautiful event Evening Under the Stars. Many school
parents, parishioners, staff and friends of Annunciation shared in the fun of the casino games,
wine toss, raffles, and auction to support our first fundraising effort of the year. The event
raised $38,000 which will go towards the operational budget for the current school year to
support the purchase of educational materials to enhance the learning experience of all our
students.
Special thanks to Annunciation Director of Development and Marketing, Keli McCann, and our
parent event chairs Elisa Cannizzo and Claudia Erskine for all their hard work organizing the
event. Our homeroom angels did an amazing job of creating class baskets and art projects for
the auction. We recognize the amount of time, effort and communication that goes into these
items and we are grateful for their commitment. Last but not least, a very sincere thanks to
the many business sponsors whose financial contributions were critical to the success of this
event. See page 7 for a list of business sponsors.

PE class became a bit scientific with the recent donation of
heart rate monitors. Students in grades 3 - 8 participat by
wearing and tracking their heart rates during rest and
exercise. Coach Chris Blundell has been teaching the
students about the resting versus active heart rate by doing
various activities with rest periods in between. The students
are enjoying the science aspect of the class and learning and
seeing how hard their heart works while they are playing
their favorite games. It also helps Coach to see how his
students are affected by their activities. Thanks to an
anonymous donor for providing the heart monitors.
Student Ambassador Program Gets Early Calling to Serve
We are very proud of 8th graders who answered the
call to serve as student ambassadors for our Evening
Under the Stars event. The student ambassador
program begins formally this year with students in
grade 7 & 8 eligible to participate. More info will be
sent home soon with complete information about the
requirements to be part of this program. Thank you to
Andy Kimerling, Dayton McCann, Luke Hammond,
Noah Lederer, Drew Savage, Natalina Putrino,
Berkeley Allison and Grace VanDenBerg for their
service and dedication to Annunciation!
Our 5th/6th grade girls volleyball team
closed out their season with a 3rd place
win for their group in the CYAA
tournament. The team, with many first
time players, had a winning season
record of 8-2.
Special thanks to coaches Randy Fabry
and Heidi Hawkins for all they did to
teach and foster the love of the sport.

Annunciation is giving back to the community by hosting the 2016 ACS
Pajama Drive. It will take place December 1-15. During this time, all are
encouraged to bring in new, unused pajamas to go towards kids living in
poverty and foster care.
We remind you that not just younger kids are in need of pajamas. Please
also remember that bigger sizes are just as much appreciated as smaller
ones. There as just as many teenagers in need as there are young kids. So
let’s make sure we help them all!
There will be 2 boxes set up where you can drop off the pajamas: 1 at the
K-3 building and 1 at the 4-8 building.
Remember, it’s from December 1-15 and all sizes are valued.
Thank you for your support!
This month in 8th grade science, we did a project which embodied all
aspects of the STREAM acronym. Eighth grade is studying Matter and
Energy this month and got to put their skills to the test. Students had to
demonstrate their knowledge of Thermal Energy and Heat by using
radiant energy from the sun to cook s'mores. Students had to design and
construct their own solar cooker using a list of given materials. They
had to explain each role of the material and list why they designed their
solar oven the way they did. Finally, we tested our products and the
students got to enjoy the fruits of their labor by eating a cooked
s'more. When we were finished, students had to think about what they
would change about their design. To carry into our next lesson on
renewable and nonrenewable sources, students then had to list the
advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. It was a fun three hour
STREAMtastic lab!
