Workshops for EYFS and KS1

MaterialsA ‘rubbish’ feelie bag allows children to explore the properties of materials before deciding whether they should be put in the bin, recycled or reused. Moving around the classroom, they act out the recycling of a can before making a fridge magnet to take home.

Waste Electrical Wheels Children learn about recycling Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), and create a 3D bar chart to discover just how many electrical items they have at home. They make an information wheel containing interesting facts and practical advice to share with their families.

Resource Futures’ audits and workshops are practical, hands-on and lots of fun. Equally importantly, they are developed by experienced teachers and are closely linked to National Curriculum 2014 objectives.

We work with one class at a time, and most sessions take between 1 and 1.5 hours to fit in with your normal timetable. Each workshop has something for pupils to take home to reinforce learning objectives and stimulate family discussion. Our audits, workshops and assemblies are perfect for themed weeks, whether Science or ‘Eco’.

Recycling at Home GameAn active game needing plenty of space and energy! Pupils learn about their local recycling collections while developing essential team work skills. Can be customised to suit your school’s priorities and Action Plan.

Love Food Hate WastePupils investigate the fascinating journey our food takes to reach our plates, and explore the environmental impacts of throwing food in the bin. They plan how to spread the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ message.

The 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, RecoverStay up-to-date with topical waste issues! Pupils learn about the 4th R,‘Recover’, and debate the advantages and disadvantages of incinerating our rubbish in Energy from Waste (EfW) plants, instead of burying it in a landfill site.

Material World Workshop

Recycled Materials ChallengeA fascinating workshop in which pupils consider the natural resources used to make everyday items and the new objects that these can be recycled into. Links to: Science

Pupils are encouraged to explore how we use the Earth’s resources and what actions we can take to live in a more sustainable manner. We can deliver this as a stand-alone workshop or to act as a springboard to a series of 6 free-to-download lesson plans, as part of our Material World pack. See zone.recycledevon.org/teachers

Waste AuditWaste audits are central to our Waste Education programme, and provide excellent data which can be used in maths lessons and shared with the whole school to show the impact of your work. Pupils analyse the contents of your school’s bins, and formulate an action plan to improve your systems to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The audit is repeated later in the year to monitor how successfully your plans have been implemented. This session takes a full morning or afternoon.

Recycling AuditCould your school save money by reusing paper more effectively before you recycle it? This audit will help you find out, and leads perfectly into a whole-school campaign focusing on the second of the 3Rs: Reuse.

Packed Lunch Waste AuditThis hands-on investigation of the waste created by pupils’ packed lunches focuses on the first of the 3Rs: Reduce. Pupils discuss the advantages and disadvantages of packaging, and the environmental advantages of reusable bottles and containers.

An assembly is a great way to get reduce, reuse and recycling messages to the whole school, motivating all pupils and staff to play their part in reducing waste. Our Waste Education Officers deliver a wide range of assemblies, customised to reflect your school’s priorities and can help kick start a school project.

We can work with your Eco Team to plan and deliver an assembly, or if time is short you can leave all the planning to us.

ChristmasChristmas Recycling Workshops: Add some sparkle to winter whilst learning about reusing! In this creative workshop, pupils transform discarded Christmas cards into beautiful gift boxes.

To kick start your day we can also work with a group a pupils to deliver a ‘rubbish Christmas’ assembly using a range of amusing props and songs!

PapermakingGet creative while learning about what happens to the paper you put in your recycling box at home and at school. We’ll bring everything we need to set up a ‘paper recycling factory’ in your school, allowing pupils to get hands-on experience of the recycling process. Each pupil will make their own hand-made piece of paper to take home.
