MILAN—Picture your life in Milan, a city with well over 2,000 years of history, and the treasures to prove it—the gothic Duomo;
the medieval Sforza Castle, the Santa Marie delle Grazie (home to Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”). Maybe you see yourself shopping
in the fabulous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a 19th century shopping arcade, followed by a world-class opera at the Teatro alla Scala.
But can you also see that Milan is a bustling, innovative, and forward-thinking city? The economic, fashion, and music capital of Italy
displays its fantastic modern architecture alongside the centuries old. Like the city itself, the Milanese are innovative, fashionable, and
forward-thinking with a deep appreciation for their rich history and culture. It’s time to make Milan your reality.

Known as the business capital of Italy, Milan is the place to study abroad for Business majors. Home to
Italy’s stock exchange, the Borsa Italiana, and famous global companies like Giorgio Armani, Bugatti,
and Pirelli, Milan offers a dynamic international business setting.
We provide one-of-a-kind courses that explore the world of business, as well as a wide variety of courses
focusing on contemporary issues in Italy. All IES Abroad area studies courses are taught by experts
in their fields, and are conducted in English. We also offer a guest lecture series and an extensive list of
course-related excursions that help you learn more about the Italian business culture. Round out your
study abroad education with a required Italian language course that is tailored to your skill level.
Our Business Studies Program allows you to take courses in Business, Finance, Marketing, Economics,
and Management taught by faculty from the local Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi and Politecnico
di Milano. Choose to enroll in a course at a local university—such as the AACSB- and EQUIS- accredited
Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, one of the top business schools in the world—and learn about
international business alongside Italian and international students.
Take an elective course in Art History, Political Science, or Photography to create a diverse course load,
or combine your coursework with an internship. Through an optional internship, you will gain hands-on
work experience, from business and consulting firms to fashion and luxury brands. No matter what
internship you have, the experience will not only be valuable to your study abroad experience, but to
your career as well.
Milan will be your classroom. When you’re not in class or at your internship, discover why high-end
designers want to be here and corporations conduct business here—everything you do will be part of
your learning experience.
We want you to feel at home in Milan, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the
city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad
experience possible.

Orientation The program begins with a short
orientation to help you become familiar
with the IES Abroad Milan staff, your
fellow students, and the city of Milan.
Topics such as academics, housing,
transportation, and health and safety are
covered during orientation.
After orientation, you participate in a three-
week intensive language program designed
to help you gain practical language skills
and acclimate to the local environment. IES
Abroad schedules several excursions and
tours to introduce you to the history, culture,
and surroundings of Milan.
Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s
Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry
Experience, begins during orientation and
continues throughout the semester with
activities focusing on cultural adjustment,
goal achievement, and preparing for the
return home.
Housing & MealsHomestays – Placements are available
in Milanese homes. This is a priceless
opportunity to learn about Italian families
first-hand and engage directly with
Italian culture. You have a private or
shared bedroom at your homestay, where
you receive breakfast and dinner daily,
and you can eat your other meals at the
university cafeterias, bars, or restaurants.
Commuting time from a typical homestay
to the IES Abroad Milan Center can range
from five to 40 minutes.
Apartments – Share a furnished
apartment located in a safe and lively
district with three to six IES Abroad
students. These apartments are single-
sex, and you generally share a bedroom
with another student. Single rooms in an
apartment carry an additional fee.
Apartment life is often enhanced by a live-
in Italian roommate called a Community
Assistant (CA). These assistants can
help you improve your Italian language
skills, get to know the city of Milan, and
integrate more fully into the local culture.
The Italian CAs also spend time at the IES
Abroad Center answering questions and
working for the program.
Meals are not included, so you normally
eat lunch at a local café or a university
cafeteria, and prepare your own breakfast
and dinner at home. Located on main
public transportation routes near the
Center, apartments offer fully-equipped
kitchens, Internet access, a dishwasher,
and a washing machine.
Collegio di Milano - Residence HallThis residence for Italian and international
honors students offers single rooms with
private bathrooms and balconies. The
facilities include a computer room, library,
small gym, private park, security system,
kitchenette, and an auditorium for special
cultural programs.
Breakfast and dinner are provided daily
and lunch is available on weekends. Space
is limited and students are chosen by the
Collegio based on academic merit. Because
of the extra amenities, this option carries
an additional fee.
Health & SafetyWith 65 years of experience, we are proud
to set the standard for health and safety
in study abroad. Our Chicago-based and
on-site staff are all highly-trained and
experienced in the matters of health,
safety, and crisis management. We are here
for you from predeparture to your return,
and are ready to support you—no matter
what time zone you’re in.

From ancient Ambrosian chants to cutting-edge multi-media installations, Italy has always been at the
forefront of musical innovation. As a music student in Milan, you have the opportunity to work with
world-class musicians, soak up the local music scene, perform at a variety of venues, and attend a wide
range of performances.
Whether you’re fluent in Italian or you can only say ciao, you are welcomed with open arms by the
IES Abroad Milan Center staff. At the Center, there is a full range of opportunities for instrumentalists,
vocalists, composers, and performance majors, and partnerships with the Civica Scuola di Musica,
the Conservatorio G. Verdi, the Milano Classica Chamber Orchestra (spring only), and La Verdi
Symphonic Choir and Orchestra.
In Milan, you get an education tailored specifically to your musical needs and interests. Enjoy being
surrounded by some of the world’s top musicians and educators—including the Center Director who
is an active composer and music scholar whose pieces are performed worldwide!
Milan will be your classroom. Envision yourself catching an opera at La Scala or working as an apprentice
with some of the top musicians in the world. You can work with an instructor who can help you hone
and develop your area of study, immerse yourself in the operatic tradition, play in an ensemble, and take
courses in music theory or history at one of IES Abroad’s partner institutions.
We also help you with instrument rentals and studio time arrangements in Milan. You are invited to attend
performances on a regular basis, from productions at La Scala to smaller concerts at intimate venues
throughout the city. You can even enroll in a music-related internship, which includes time spent working
at your placement in addition to an academic seminar that helps you contextualize what you’re learning.
We want you to feel at home in Milan, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the
city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad
experience possible.

Orientation The program begins with a short
orientation to help you become familiar
with the IES Abroad Milan staff, your
fellow students, and the city of Milan.
Topics such as academics, housing,
transportation, and health and safety are
covered during orientation.
After orientation, you participate in a three-
week intensive language program designed
to help you gain practical language skills
and acclimate to the local environment. IES
Abroad schedules several excursions and
tours to introduce you to the history, culture,
and surroundings of Milan.
Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s
Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry
Experience, begins during orientation and
continues throughout the semester with
activities focusing on cultural adjustment,
goal achievement, and preparing for the
return home.
Housing & MealsHomestays – Placements are available
in Milanese homes. This is a priceless
opportunity to learn about Italian families
first-hand and engage directly with Italian
culture. You have a private or shared
bedroom at your homestay, where you
receive breakfast and dinner daily, and you
can eat your other meals at the university
cafeterias, bars, or restaurants. Commuting
time from a typical homestay to the IES
Abroad Milan Center can range from five to
40 minutes.
Apartments – Share a furnished apartment
located in a safe and lively district with
three to six IES Abroad students. These
apartments are single-sex, and you
generally share a bedroom with another
student. Single rooms in an apartment
carry an additional fee.
Apartment life is often enhanced by a live-
in Italian roommate called a Community
Assistant (CA). These assistants can
help you improve your Italian language
skills, get to know the city of Milan, and
integrate more fully into the local culture.
The Italian CAs also spend time at the IES
Abroad Center answering questions and
working for the program.
Meals are not included, so you normally eat
lunch at a local café or a university cafeteria,
and prepare your own breakfast and dinner at
home. Located on main public transportation
routes near the Center, apartments offer
fully-equipped kitchens, Internet access, a
dishwasher, and a washing machine.
Collegio di Milano - Residence HallThis residence for Italian and international
honors students offers single rooms with
private bathrooms and balconies. The
facilities include a computer room, library,
small gym, private park, security system,
kitchenette, and an auditorium for special
cultural programs.
Breakfast and dinner are provided daily
and lunch is available on weekends. Space
is limited and students are chosen by the
Collegio based on academic merit. Because
of the extra amenities, this option carries
an additional fee.
Health & SafetyWith 65 years of experience, we are proud
to set the standard for health and safety
in study abroad. Our Chicago-based and
on-site staff are all highly-trained and
experienced in the matters of health, safety,
and crisis management. We are here for
you from predeparture to your return, and
are ready to support you—no matter what
time zone you’re in.
Part of making you feel at home in Milan is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that prepares you, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services.

MS360 Tutti All’Opera:
Staging Italian Opera
This course revolves around and culminates in the
staging of an Italian opera. You split into groups
to work on the various parts of the opera-staging
process, including lighting, sound, and advertising.
You also create a critical/analytical text on the opera,
which will be selected each semester e.g. Mozart’s
Le nozze di Figaro.
MS/VO383 Choral Ensemble
Audition for a place in the La Verdi Symphonic Choir
& Orchestra, a professional performance group
made up of 100+ members. As part of the Choir, you
will typically sing with the Symphonic Orchestra
of Milano Giuseppe Verdi, but also occasionally
collaborate with various national and international
symphonic groups. This is a chance for you to work
shoulder to shoulder with professional performers.
Partner Institutions & Instructors Based on level and language ability, IES Abroad places
each student with some of the best instructors in the
country for both individual instruction and ensemble
work. Most of these instructors currently work for
prestigious institutions like the orchestra of La Scala, top
Italian conservatories and universities, as well as private
academies. A complete list of faculty and their respective
institutions is available at www.IESabroad.org/study-
abroad/programs/milan-music-tradition-innovation.
Our Milan Music Program allows you to take courses at the
best music institutions in Milan. The institutions that most
frequently welcome U.S. semester and full-year students are:
Civica Scuola di Musica
The largest private music school in Italy, the Civica Scuola
di Musica includes schools of jazz, choral, classical,
contemporary, and early music. Our Music Coordinator
may arrange for you to take instrumental technique
and performance classes here, as well as English-taught
composition, theory, or history courses.
Based on the number of contact hours, you earn 2-3 credits
per course for instruction, private lessons, and ensemble
work. Either audio or video files/web links are required
with the application.
Conservatorio G. Verdi
Founded in 1807, the Conservatorio G. Verdi is the largest
music school in Italy, enrolling 2,000 students each year.
Some of Italy’s most famous musicians have graduated
from or taught at the Conservatorio. Individual instruction
can be arranged with faculty from the Conservatorio,
based on your skill level.
Based on the number of contact hours, you earn 2-3 credits
per course for instruction, private lessons, and ensemble
work. Either audio or video files/web links are required

The string orchestra assistantship is designed to offer
undergraduate string performers the opportunity to
enhance their orchestral practice of both early Baroque and
Classical repertoire, including relevant chamber music
literature when applicable. Music students also increase
their performance skills and are introduced to performance
practice with original instruments. Milano Classica, a
renowned chamber orchestra that has been active on the
professional Milanese scene since 1992, welcomes U.S.

It is impossible to avoid the past in Rome. It eagerly waits for you around every corner, hoping to
intrigue you with a worn-down step, surprise you with an unexpected fountain, or inspire you with
soaring architecture. Come study Rome’s unmatched historic and artistic past while simultaneously
learning about its modern role in international politics and business. No matter what your current level
of Italian language proficiency is, this program is for you.
Enroll in an Italian language course as well as four area studies courses from the following academic themes:
• Art History
• Early Childhood Education
• Film Studies
• History & Classics
• International Relations
• Sociology & Religious Studies
Whether you take all of your area studies courses in one theme or mix and match courses from multiple
themes, Rome will be your classroom. Can you imagine places like the Vatican, the Pantheon, the
Forum, or the Colosseum being part of your education? Our courses are experiential in nature, and we
organize more than 150 course-related excursions each semester to historic, artistic, and cultural sites
that take advantage of the city’s many opportunities.
Immerse yourself into Roman life by enrolling in courses at a local university, partaking in a part-time
internship to build professional and personal skills, or living with an Italian Student Companion(ISC)—a
local university student who becomes your host and a resource to help you make the most of living and
learning in Rome. You can also add international work experience to your résumé while earning credit
by participating in an internship or social action placement and accompanying academic seminar.
We want you to feel at home in Rome, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the
city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad

Study abroad brings you
into contact with strange
places and faces and if you
pay attention, it makes you
realize how unstrange these

begin to adapt, slowly at fi rst and

your continued exposure. And
you develop a skill that cannot
be taught in a classroom or in a

yet is so vital to being an effective

issues that affect Rome.
A social action service learning experience consists of time spent with a local
organization, accompanied by an academic, for-credit social action seminar. Through
the seminar you have structured time for reflection and discussion as you explore
human development, social business, and the need for closer contact between
economics and ethics.
Possible placements may include organizations focused on:

CENTER DIRECTOR
Veronica Semeraro
has worked at our
Fondazione IES
Abroad Italy-Siena
Center since the founding of the
program in 2006 when she was hired
as Student Affairs Coordinator. Since
that time, she has been actively
involved in all aspects of the program,
including housing, customized
programs, arrival and orientation, fi eld
trips, and academic coordination.
Veronica was promoted to Director of
our Siena Center in 2012.
Prior to working with IES Abroad,
Veronica graduated with honors in
Archaeology from the University of
Siena. Upon winning a research grant
following graduation, Veronica spent
six years working in the University
of Siena archeology laboratory in
Computer Science. She also spent
several years drawing dig maps
while working on-site in various
important archaeological digs in
Tuscany (rooms beneath the Siena
Cathedral; castle of Miranduolo,
Podium Bonizio village) specializing
in GIS technology. Veronica is an avid
traveler and a member of an all-
female Brazilian drum group in Siena.
OUR CENTER The IES Abroad Siena Center is located
in a palace on the famous Piazza del
Campo—a large, sunny plaza which is
the center of social life in Siena. The
palace, called Palazzo Chigi Zondadari,
was built in the 14th century and
served as a home to the prominent
Chigi family for centuries, whose
lineage includes many intellectuals,
artists, businessmen, and even a pope!
At the Center, you will attend class in
multimedia classrooms, study in the
computer lab and library, and socialize
with your classmates, instructors, and
staff. WiFi is available throughout.

The enchanting city of Siena is home base as you explore all that Tuscany has to offer. World-renowned
cuisine, more than 120 nature reserves, and the hustle and bustle of Florence ( just a 45-minute drive
away)…should we keep going?
This program’s signature course, Living Siena: Exploring Historical and Contemporary Tuscan Culture,
guides you on an exploration of the region as you develop an independent research project throughout
the semester. Esteemed faculty take learning outside the classroom with visits to Siena’s piazzas and
cathedrals, Renaissance art in nearby Florence, and a monastery in the idyllic countryside. This isn’t just
an exhibit at a museum—this is where you live.
History comes to life in Siena, as most evident in the robust life of the contrade—neighborhood districts
that divide Siena into 17 subcultures with their own music, traditions, and lore dating back to the Middle
Ages. Through activities of your contrada, you can learn from your neighbors how the contrade have
influenced social, political, and religious life for centuries.
Customize your academic experience with an Italian language course, a part-time internship, and
English- or Italian-taught area studies courses. Take advantage of student life in Siena as you participate
in Università degli Studi di Siena-sponsored activities and enjoy the libraries, cafeterias, and WiFi in
university buildings throughout the city. You may be able to take courses at the university if you are at an
advanced Italian language level or meet the prerequisites to take English-taught Business and Economics
courses.
We want you to feel at home in Siena, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into your life
in Tuscany. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study
abroad experience possible.

Part of making you feel at home in Siena is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the fi eld trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services.
Orientation
The program begins with a one-week
orientation that introduces you to the IES
Abroad Siena staff, your fellow students, and
the city of Siena. Topics such as academics,
housing, transportation, and health and
safety are covered during the week.
In addition to intensive Italian language
sessions, settle into your new home in Siena
as you sample aperitivi with Italian students,
visit the Contrada Museum, pick olives in
the Tuscan countryside, and explore the
medieval past of Siena’s surroundings during
an archaeological excursion.
Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s
Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry
Experience, begins during orientation and
continues throughout the semester with
activities focusing on cultural adjustment,
goal achievement, and preparing for the
return home.
Housing & Meals
Apartments – Share an apartment with
other IES Abroad students and a local
Italian student in the historic center of
town. Furnished apartments are single-sex,
and usually two students share a bedroom.
Apartments have equipped kitchens, and you
are responsible for your own meals. Italian
roommates can help with improving your
Italian language skills, getting to know Siena,
and immersing yourself in the local culture.
They also serve as a fi rst point of contact for
housing questions.
Homestays – Choosing to live in a homestay
is a great way to experience cultural
integration. Homestays generally house one
or two students. Accommodations vary, and
hosts provide you with light daily breakfasts
and one additional daily meal.
Health & Safety
With 65 years of experience, we are proud
to set the standard for health and safety in
study abroad. Our Chicago-based and on-site
staff are all highly-trained and experienced
in the matters of health, safety, and crisis
management. We are here for you from
predeparture to your return, and are ready
to support you—no matter what time zone
you’re in.

The intersection of culture and cuisine is taken to the next level in Tuscany, where traditional food and
wine are not only a large part of the cultural identity, but also a primary economic contributor.
Our Business & Economics of Italian Food & Wine Program is ideal for Business, Economics, Agribusiness,
Political Science, and Agricultural Economics majors, as well as any student with an academic or
professional interest in local and organic food and wine in Italy.
You will live in the welcoming city of Siena, home to many specialty foods, including hand-rolled
pici pasta, crostini with chicken liver, and panforte nut and fruit cake crafted by local, quality-driven
producers. It’s here that you’ll enroll in four courses for a total of 12 credits where you will explore how
business and economic concepts are woven into the fabric of the Italian food industry. Imagine exploring
global marketing strategies one day and visiting a local Brunello wine producer with international
distribution the next. How about studying EU agriculture policy and then talking to the owner of an
agriturismo farm about how these policies impact his business? Welcome to study abroad!
Tuscany will be your classroom. Can you picture visiting Italian organic cheese production facilities,
utilizing case studies from local wineries, and having lunch with the owners of an independent farm? Our
courses take advantage of the region’s many resources that will help you understand key concepts of the
food business in Tuscany which you’ll apply to your future career—wherever in the world it may be.
