AcademicRequirementsandOptions

TheMasterofArtsdegreeinArtHistoryoffersstudentsacurriculumthatcoversarangeofhistorical,theoretical,geographic,andtransculturaltopics.Forsomestudents,theMasterofArtsdegreeisaterminaldegreeinpreparationforcuratorialoreducationcareersingalleriesandmuseums;forothers,itispreparationtoenteraPh.D.programelsewhere.Allstudentsreceivetrainingthathonestheircriticalanalysis,research,andwritingskills.Theyadditionallyhavetheopportunitytoimmersethemselvesinthestudyofdiversecreativepracticesandvisualmaterial,andtotakeadvantageofthemanyopportunitiestoexperienceandstudyworksofartfirst-handatthevariousmuseumsandgalleriesintheWashington,D.C.area.

CombinedBAwithamajorinArtHistory/MasterofArtsinthefieldofArtHistory

ThecombinedBA/MAprogramoffersundergraduateArtHistorymajorsexcellingintheirstudiestheopportunitytoadvancetograduatelevelcourseworkintheirsenioryearandentertheMAprogramupongraduation.Duringthefallsemesteroftheirsenioryearstudentsmusttakethearthistoriographyseminar(AH6258).Duringthespringsemester,studentsmusttake6creditsofgraduatearthistorycoursework.

CoursesTheMAisathirty-sixcredithourprogram.Graduatecoursesarenumberedatthe6000-level.Asmanyastwocourses(sixcredits)may,withtheapprovaloftheDirectorofGraduateStudiesandtheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudies,betakenoutsidethedepartment,inanotherdepartmentatGW,oratanotheruniversityintheWashingtonarea.Typicallyfull-timestudentstakethreecourses(ninecredits)persemester.Duringthefirstsemesterallstudentsmusttakehistoriography(AH6258).

MAstudentsmusttakeclassesin5ofthefollowing7categories:Ancient;Medieval/IslamicWorld;Renaissance/Baroque;18th-19thCentury;Modern/Contemporary;Asian;andPre-Columbian/LatinAmerican/African.

LanguageExam

Successfulworkinarthistoryrequiresknowledgeofoneormoreforeignlanguages.Oneoftherequirementsforgraduationispassingaforeignlanguageexam.Aftertwofailedattempts,astudentmayberequiredtotakeagraduatereadingcourse.LanguageexamswillbegivenThursday,September15.Theyareadministeredandgradedwithinthedepartmentandconsistofthefollowing.Studentsaregivenapassageinthelanguageoftheirchoice(Arabic,Dutch,French,German,Hindi,Italian,Latin,Persian,Portuguese,orSpanish).Thesubjectofthepassagewillbesomeaspectofarthistory.Accompanyingthepassagewillbeaquestionsheet;afterreadingthepassage,studentswillanswerthequestions.Theexamisintendedtosimulatethewayinwhichweusescholarlymaterials.Studentsmaybeaskedtoproduceatranslationofanexcerpt.Dictionariesareallowed,aslongasthereisnodangerofcheating(i.e.electronicdictionariesmaybeallowedatthediscretionoftheproctor;non-electronicdictionariespreferred).Thetimelimitisthreehours.
