Tradition • Pride • Vision • ExcellenceWelcome to Wantagh Schools

New residents who are parents of school-age children should register their children through our district’s central registration process . The Wantagh School District utilizes centralized registration, which takes place in the Office of Pupil Personnel in the Forest Lake Elementary School building at 3090 Beltagh Ave ., Wantagh, NY . The hours for registration are monday through Thursday between 8 a .m . and 12 p .m . and please note that appointments are required . If you have questions regarding appropriate forms or required documentation, please visit our website at www .wantaghschools .org or call central registration at 516-781-3780 to obtain more information .

Kindergarten Registration: The child to be registered for kindergarten must be 5 years of age on or before December 1 of the school year of entry . Registration will be held at each elementary school on Thursday, December 14, and parents will be provided with complete information prior to this date . Please see our website for additional requirements and information concerning kindergarten registration and admission . Physical and immunization forms are available on the nurse’s website for each building .

Student PhotographsFrom time to time, the district takes photographs and videos of its students and parents to use in district publications, press releases and/or other media . If there is any reason that you would object to such inclusion, please contact the Superintendent’s Office at 516-679-6300 .

Pesticide NotificationNew York State Education Law Section 409-H requires all public and non-public elementary and secondary schools to provide written notification to all parents and persons in parental relation and to all staff regarding the potential use of pesticides throughout the school year . The Wantagh School District has taken the non-pesticide approach to pest control, known as an integrated management program .

The district maintains a list of persons who wish to receive 48-hour notification of certain pesticide applications . If you would like to receive this 48-hour notification of pesticide applications that are scheduled to occur in our schools, please contact marty Abrams, Director of Facilities, at 516-679-6314 for a notification request form . Forms are routinely mailed to households of all students prior to the start of school .

Asbestos NotificationIn accordance with 40 CFR §763 .84 .c, regard this statement as the district’s annual notification to all workers, students and/or their legal guardians that the district continues to maintain its Asbestos management Plan which documents all performed or planned asbestos related inspections, response actions, and post-response action activities, including periodic reinspection and surveillance activities within the school district . A copy of this AmP is available for review and/or inspection at the district’s facilities office .

Community Use of School FacilitiesNonprofit community organizations are welcome to utilize our school facilities according to specific policies set forth by the Board of Education . Applications for facilities use can be found on the district website and inquiries should be directed to marty Abrams, Director of Facilities, at 516-679-6314 .

While the Board of Education encourages community groups to use our school facilities according to our guidelines, school-sponsored activities must always take precedence in scheduling the use of buildings and grounds .

District Philosophy: A Sound Educational EnvironmentThe philosophy of the Wantagh Public Schools is to help all children develop their full potential so that they can take their place in society as productive, well-adjusted, responsible citizens . Family, school and community must join together to use all resources available to meet the immediate needs of basic education and the continuing challenge of lifelong learning in our rapidly changing society .

The school is a community, and we all have a responsibility to uphold the rules and regulations to assist in its smooth functioning . Discipline can be viewed essentially as a matter of self-control . Additionally, students who feel good about themselves — with strong feelings of self-worth — will be better able to develop self-discipline and contribute to the school community .

In accordance with the requirements of the NYS Education Department, the Wantagh School District has a written district Safety Plan, a Dignity Act Policy and a Code of Conduct which define discipline, rights, responsibilities and consequences on the elementary, middle and high school levels . Copies of these plans and policies are available in each school office and on the district website, www .wantaghschools .org .

Internet Use & Safety PolicyParents and guardians should be familiar with the Internet Use & Safety Policy, which is available on our website . In order to protect all users, the Internet Use & Safety Policy contains restrictions on accessing inappropriate material on the internet through the district’s computer network . Parents or guardians may specifically request that the district not allow their child to have internet access on the district’s computer network . Such a request must be made in writing, signed and dated by the parent(s) or guardian, and delivered to each student’s building principal .

Dignity ActThe Wantagh Board of Education recognizes that safe and supportive learning environments can increase student attendance and improve academic achievement . A student’s ability to learn and achieve at high academic levels and a school’s ability to educate students are compromised by incidents of discrimination and harassment including, but not limited to, bullying, cyberbullying, taunting and intimidation . Therefore, in accordance with the Dignity Act, the district will strive to create an environment free from discrimination and harassment . The district will also foster civility in the schools to prevent and promote conduct consistent with the district’s educational mission .

The district condemns and prohibits all forms of discrimination and harassment based on actual or perceived race, color, creed, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, political affiliation, age, marital status, military status, veteran status, disability, sex, sexual orientation or gender by school employees or students on school property and at school sponsored activities and events that take place at locations off school property . In addition, any act of discrimination or harassment, outside of school sponsored events, that can reasonably be expected to materially and substantially disrupt the education process, may be subject to discipline .

Two employees at every school have been designated as Dignity Act Coordinators as follows:

Districtwide Dr . marc Ferris Wantagh High School Jennifer Santorello and Carolyn BreivogelWantagh middle School Nicole Friedman and Dawn matrochanoForest Lake Elementary School Dr . Tracy Zelenetz and Anthony Ciuffomandalay Elementary School Dr . melissa Bennett and marie PisicchioWantagh Elementary School Dr . meredith Protzel and Dr . Randee Bonagura

The district will promptly investigate all complaints of discrimination and harassment and take corrective measures, as necessary . Complaints will be investigated in accordance with applicable policies and regulations . If, after an appropriate investigation, the district finds that this policy has been violated, corrective action will be taken in accordance with district policies and regulations, the Code of Conduct and all appropriate federal or state laws .

Training will be provided during each school year for all district employees in conjunction with existing professional development training on awareness, sensitivity and reporting acts of harassment and discrimination .

Vandalism Hurts All of UsVandalism in our schools hurts all of us . Students, teachers and community members lose the opportunity to utilize needed equipment or educational materials . The community as a whole suffers, not only because the climate of our schools is compromised, but also because the school district must bear the financial burden of this senseless vandalism .

The Wantagh Board of Education will adhere to a stringent policy on vandalism for any individual who is apprehended for loitering on or vandalizing school district facilities . Parents and legal guardians will be held liable for willful, malicious or unlawful acts committed by children over 10 and younger than 18 years of age, in accordance with state law . Charges will not be dropped when brought to court, and the district will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law .

If such acts of destruction do occur, and the identity of the perpetrator is determined, the administration will seek to recover the cost of damages from parents or legal guardians . If recovery cannot be made, the administration will authorize counsel to bring a cause of action in the civil court to obtain a judgment to recover damages .

Remember – vandalism hurts everyone . If you see an act of vandalism in progress, call 911 immediately .

AttendanceRegular attendance is important to the learning process . While it is recognized that students learn from many sources, it is the philosophy of the Wantagh School District that the classroom learning environment is a key component of the success of students . The interaction between students and teachers, and among students, adds an in-depth dimension to the learning process . Therefore, regular attendance and classroom participation through classwork, classroom discussions and homework are imperative .

Students are expected to comply with all state regulations in regard to attendance . Absence for religious observance shall be permitted under rules established by the NYS Commissioner of Education .

The Wantagh School District defines a legal absence as sickness, death or sickness in the family, impassable roads or inclement weather, religious observation, quarantine, an appearance required in court, attendance at school sponsored events, attendance at a health clinic, attendance at an approved cooperative work program, attendance at an approved college visit or the fulfillment of a military obligation .

Absence or tardiness for any reason not cited above will be regarded as illegal . A child who does not attend school for other than a lawful reason will be deemed truant and will be disciplined in accordance with the district disciplinary code and the regulations of the school .

The absence or lateness of a student must be reported . messages can be left on our voicemail message system, which is in operation 24 hours a day . Parents must still provide a written notice for each absence or lateness upon the student’s return to school .

Health ServicesSchool nurses assigned to each building implement the health services program . Screenings for hearing and vision are conducted and general first aid is administered . By helping to maintain the physical well-being of our students, nurses play a vital role in the children’s total school experience .

Administration of MedicationNew York State Education Law and Public Health Law strictly forbid the administration of any prescribed or over-the-counter medication without an order from a healthcare provider and parent permission . A parental request for the district nurse to administer medication to a child while in school or participating in a school-sponsored activity must include the following: (1) name and grade of student; (2) name of medication; (3) dosage and time of administration; (4) possible side effects; (5) date of prescription; (6) order from the healthcare provider and signature; and (7) parent’s signature .

The medication must be in its original container, properly labeled by the pharmacist and delivered to the school nurse by the parent and/or guardian . Permission forms may be obtained from the school nurse, or the healthcare provider may write this order on his/her office stationary . Parents are responsible for picking up unused medication at the end of the school year. Medication that is not claimed will be discarded.

Medical ExaminationsAnnual medical examinations are required of all students in grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10 and for all new entrants to the Wantagh School District . Reports by the private health care provider must be returned to the child’s school Health Office . Students for whom this information is not provided will be examined by the school physician .

Health ScreeningsAnnual vision screenings will be conducted by the school nurses for students in grades K-3, 5, 7, and 10 . A color perception test will be administered once by the school nurse to all kindergarten students and new entrants . An annual hearing screening will be conducted for students in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 .

An Important Part of Community LifeOur public schools are a vital part of our community life in Wantagh . We have a strong investment in education, and our schools are tangible evidence of that investment . Community members are invited to take advantage of our excellent facilities, enjoy our many athletic, cultural, social and educational functions, and join us in helping to maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to education .

The Wantagh Board of EducationOne way to become a part of the educational process is through participation in the meetings of the Board of Education . The monthly business meetings and planning sessions are designated on the calendar and district website . A portion of every business meeting is set aside as a forum for community members to raise questions, make comments and bring matters of concern to the attention of the Board of Education . The Board of Education encourages community members to attend these important meetings . Planning sessions serve as opportunities to observe the working sessions of the Board .

Registration and VotingVoting in the annual school budget election is an important opportunity not only for exercising one’s constitutional rights but also to ensure one’s role in the future of our educational system in Wantagh . Complete information about registration and voting procedures is distributed in advance of the annual election via the district’s budget brochure, which is mailed to all residents . This information is also posted on the district website . Individuals interested in additional information may contact the District Clerk at 516-679-6310 .

Parent AssociationsThe Wantagh School District is proud of the strong partnerships it has forged with our parents . We believe that quality education is not possible unless school and home work together . Our parent associations on both the elementary and secondary levels provide us with generous and consistent support . Their creative and tireless efforts enhance the social, educational and cultural resources at each of our schools while offering a unique forum for parents to become more directly involved in the education of their children . We urge all parents to become members of these important groups and join the Wantagh School District as active partners in education .

The Wantagh Foundation for Educational ExcellenceA nonprofit independent organization founded by Wantagh residents and

business leaders in 1993, the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence was created to mobilize community support, commitment and resources to enhance public education in the Wantagh community . The foundation’s goals are to: provide financial and creative support to the Wantagh Schools by identifying and mobilizing resources; foster partnerships among school, community and industry; and enhance cooperation and understanding while encouraging innovation and creativity in meeting the challenges facing public education . The foundation’s summer recreation program provides children with a fun, enriching experience where participants are supervised at all times by certified teachers and high school or college counselors .

The foundation hosts a series of Teen Center after school enrichment programs, which are listed on this year’s calendar . These programs are held for middle school students and include activities requested by the students themselves . A wide range of opportunities are offered to include academic assistance, recreational activities, computer skills and technology in the foundation’s Technology Center . The programs also provide a strong element of community service as a vehicle for encouraging civic pride and personal accomplishment . The foundation’s major emphasis is the raising of funds to support these programs .

The foundation’s Technology Center is also the venue where middle school students teach computer courses to senior citizens on designated Saturdays, as shown on the district calendar . For more information regarding the Wantagh Foundation, contact Ralph Spagnolo at 516-781-5055 .

Senior CitizensThe senior citizens of our community have made tremendous contributions to the character of Wantagh, and we welcome them as important members of our school district family . Senior citizens, 65 years or older, may be entitled to a partial exemption from school taxes, on a sliding scale from 5 percent to 50 percent on incomes up to $37,399 per year . Also, tax exemptions may be obtained for property owners who need to make improvements on a one, two or three family house to facilitate and accommodate use and accessibility by a physically handicapped resident . Application must be made annually to the Nassau County Department of Assessment, 240 Old Country Road, mineola, NY 11501 (516-571-2377) .

Senior citizens are also entitled to free passes to district cultural and social functions . These passes may be obtained from the office of the Superintendent of Schools at 516-679-6300 .

An extensive variety of course offerings enables students to find suitable programs appropriate to their interests and abilities . Qualified students may choose from a number of advanced placement courses . Students are encouraged to supplement their academic requirements with a variety of elective courses, which may include business, vocational and career offerings .
