DearChoristersandFamilyMembers,Welcometothe2017-2018academicschoolyearatCreekviewHighSchool.WeareveryexcitedthatyouhavechosentobeapartoftheCreekviewChoralFamily.Thechoralprogramisverysuccessful,builtontheexcellenttrainingthestudentsreceiveattheelementaryandmiddleschoollevels.TheCreekviewChoralprogramisrecognizedforoutstandingperformancesatlocalconcerts,invitationstoperformatstateandregionalconferences,andconsistentlyawardedsuperiorratingsatperformanceevaluationinbothon-stageperformanceandsight-reading.Moreimportantthanagreatperformanceistheopportunitytoworktogetherwiththeseincrediblehumanbeings.AsateacherIlearnfromthemeverydayandtakegreatprideinbeingtheirchorusdirector.Theyarefriendly,encouraging,funny,sympathetictoneedsofothers,andimmenselytalented–theyarefamily.After19yearsofteachingIamconstantlyamazedbywhatouryoungpeoplecando.AsparentsIhopeyouwillreachouttoourchoralboosterpresidentLisaNewberryandofferassistanceinanyway.Ourchoralboostersareanintegralpartofourchoralprogram,andtheprogramcouldnotsustainitselfwithoutyoursupport.Thishandbookwillprovideimportantinformationanddatesregardingthe2017-2018academicschoolyear.Pleasedonothesitatetocontactmewithanyquestionsorcommentsthatyoumayhave.Sincerely,ScottL.MartinCreekviewHighSchoolChorusTeacherscott.martin@cherokee.k12.ga.us


DearCVHSChorusFamilies,Welcometothe2017-2018schoolyear!Youarenowapartofawidelyrespectedandrecognizedhighschoolchoralprogram.OverthepastseveralyearsourstudentshaveperformedforGMEAandACDA(byinvitationonly),LGPE,AtlantaBravesgames,acombinedCherokeeCountychoiratTheCathedralofSt.JohntheDivineinNewYorkCity,andDisneyWorld.Thisyearwillbeequallyasexcitingaswewillcontinuewithouronandoff-campusperformances.Thisexcellencetakesanincredibleamountofhardworkandwecan’tdoitwithoutyou.WeareinneedofparentstochaircommitteessuchastheCheesecake/Piefundraiser,Popcornfundraiser,Chaperonecoordinator,Concertsetup/breakdown,ValentinesBanquet,andSpringChorusbanquettonameafew.Whetheryoucanvolunteer30minutesorforeverychorusevent,weneedyou.Weinvitenotonlytheparentsbutextendedfamilyaswelltoparticipateinthisyear’schorusjourney.DuetoincreasedbudgetcutsacrosstheboardweneedtorampupourfundraisinggoalsthisyearthroughAdsalesforourconcertprograms,enlistingcompanies,businesses,andindividualstobecomedonorsandbydirectdonationsmadebyfamilymembers.Memoriesmadewithmusiclastalifetime.Comeshareinthesememorieswithyourchild.Youwillgettoseetheamazingyoungpeoplethattheyarebecoming.Itseemsthatintoday’stimes,teenagersdon’twantparentsaroundfortheirvariousactivities.ThisiscertainlyNOTthecasewithourchoruskids.ThestudentsLOVEitwhentheirparentsareintheclassroom,behindthescenesatconcerts,andchaperoningoneofourmanytrips.Wewon’tevergetthesehighschooldaysback,sogetinvolvedandIpromiseyouwillreceiveablessing.Itisajoytoseethemlaughingwiththeirfriendsandexpressingthemselvesthroughmusic.Pleasehelpcontinuetobuildatraditionofsuperiorperformanceandmusicalexcellence.Musicisanintegralpartofeducation.Musicawakenstheimagination,opensthemind,andactivatesthebody.Musicmatters!Letmusicbeapartofyourjoy,happiness,andpeacethisschoolyear.Ilookforwardtoworkingwithyouandyourchild.OurfirstboostermeetingisMonday,August7that7pm.Comeandshowyoursupportastherewillbesignuplistsandmuchinformationprovided.Feelfreetocontactmeatanytime.Witheveryone’shelpwewillcontinuetheproudtraditionoftheCreekviewChoralprogram.Warmestregards,LisaNewberryCreekviewChorusBoosterPresident770-757-8431lisa.newberry@choa.org

CourseDescription/Purposes

• Studentsinchoruswilllearnandperformmusicfromvariousmusicalperiodsandstyles.• Studentswilllearnandutilizethesolfegesight-readingmethod,singcounting,scales,andpropervocalwarmups.• Studentswillbegintodevelopanacademicandkinestheticunderstandingofthebasicsofvocaltechnique-

understandingtheideasandpracticingthemintheirsinging.Performance/DressRehearsal

• Studentsareexpectedtoparticipateinallperformancesandrehearsals.Chorusisateameffortandtheabsenceofonepersonfromaperformancewillnegativelyimpacttheperformance.Youaregivenacalendarfortheentireyearonthefirstdayofschool.Pleasemarktheseeventsonyourpersonalandfamilycalendar.

o Themostonecanearnis100pointspersight-readinggrade,whichisthecombinationof2sight-readingassignments,i.e.SR1+SR2.Sight-readingassignmentssignificantlyaffecttheoverallscore.Studentsknowtheexamplethatistobeperformedaheadoftimeandcanpracticeathome.Pleaseencouragethemtodoso,andifyouareaparentwhowouldliketolearnaboutmusic,askyourchildtobeyourteacher!Agreatwaytolearnsomethingistoteachit!Thisparent/studentengagementisalwaysthefirststeptobecomingasuccessfulstudent.

o Studentswhoearnlessthandesirablescoresmay,atanytimebeforetheendofthegradingperiod,redotheirsight-readingforanimprovedscore.Thegoalisthattheindividualputsinthenecessarytimetoearntheimprovedscore.Inacasewherethestudentearneda“0”,itisduetothemfailingtocompletetheassignmentand/orturninginthescoresheet.Thepointofthisentireexerciseisforourstudentstobecomeindependentreadersofthemusiconthepage.Ourmaingoalistograduatethesestudentsarmedwiththeabilitytoreadandcomprehendmusicnotation,notjusthearitplayedfromthemonthepianoandsimplysingitback.

ClassroomRules• Cometoclasspreparedandontime• Takecareofyourassignedmusic.Youmaytakeyourmusichomewithyou,butitmustbereturnedonadailybasis.• Useonlypencil,anduseoneoftentomarkyourmusic• Attendallconcerts.Studentswhodonotthinktheycanattendtheconcerts(otherthantrueemergencies)should

dropthecourse.Werehearsetogetherasateam,andtheexpectationisthatwewillperformatconcertsasateam.TardyPolicy

• Studentswhoshowuptoclasstardywithoutapasswillbegivenanadministrativereferralandadministrationwillassigndetention.Ifastudentismorethan15minuteslatethereferralwillbeforskipping

• Studentsarenotrequiredtoparticipateinfundraisers.Studentswhoparticipateinfundraiserswillearn100%oftheprofitaftertheirfeeshavebeenpaid(exception-alldonations/adswillresultin50%profitfortheboostercluband50%profitforthestudent).Thispolicygreatlyrewardsindividualswhoworkhard.Studentscannot“withdraw”actualcashfromtheiraccount.Accountfundsmustonlybeusedforchoralpurposes.
