A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE DEVASTATING IMPACT OF WORKPLACE VIOLENCE AND THE BENEFITS OF WORKPLACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION TRAINING, TO ENCOURAGE EACH LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY TO PROVIDE SUCH TRAINING TO THE EMPLOYERS OF THIS STATE, AND TO COMMEND THE CHARLESTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE FOR THEIR EFFORTS ON COMBATTING WORKPLACE VIOLENCE.

Whereas, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that about 2 million American workers become victims of workplace violence each year; and

Whereas, in 2013, 397 fatal workplace injuries in the United States were classified as homicides; and

Whereas, the federal government believes that the costs of workplace violence, both seen and unseen effects, costs the economy billions of dollars; and

Whereas, OSHA believes that a well-written and implemented workplace violence prevention program, combined with engineering controls, administrative controls, and training can reduce the incidence of workplace violence in both the private sector and public workplaces; and

Whereas, in most workplaces where risk factors can be identified, the risk of assault can be prevented or minimized if employers take appropriate precautions such as establishing a zero-tolerance policy toward workplace violence and training; and

Whereas, understanding the value of training, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office offered free workplace violence prevention training to teach employers about violence in the workplace, threat assessments, prevention, intervention, protection protocols, implementing Zero-Tolerance Policy, preparing for an active shooter, and a place to cope with the aftermath of an event; and

Whereas, similar training programs across the State that provide employers with the tools to reduce workplace violence would provide a great benefit to all citizens of this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, encourage all law enforcement agencies across this State to conduct workplace violence training programs, and to encourage the employers of this State to participate in the program.

Be it further resolved that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, commend the efforts of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office on their efforts to train employers on methods of combating workplace violence.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to each law enforcement agency of this State and to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
