LETTER FROM RICHARD BELL

What an exciting year to have assumed the position of Board Chair. The 2017/2018 season was a year of historic change with the departure of our long-serving Artistic Managing Director, Bill Millerd, and the arrival of Ashlie Corcoran as our new Artistic Director. Bill, Ashlie, Peter Cathie White, and the entire team at the Arts Club have done an incredible job of ensuring a smooth transition. And what a send-off for Bill’s last season of programming: the highest-ever ticket revenue; the highest-grossing new work on tour with Mom’s the Word: Nest ½ Empty; and, of course, Mamma Mia!, which broke nearly every record and became the longest-running production at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. But Bill’s work for the Arts Club never ends, as he has agreed to work closely with the Arts Club on a new initiative around Planned Giving. Furthermore, his legacy will continue into the future with the Bill Millerd Artist Fund, for which we successfully raised $1 million this year.

One of the many rewards of being Chair is the opportunity to establish a closer relationship with the leadership of the Arts Club, and I can assure you that this company is in good hands with Peter and Ashlie at the helm. They are delicately balancing the tried and true with the new and different, which bodes well for the future as we look to expand our reach across a continually evolving multicultural and demographically diverse community. I want to thank our patrons, the three levels of government, and the numerous corporations and foundations for their ongoing support. Without you, we would not be able to bring great theatre to the stage in Vancouver and into other cities across the country.

The 2017/2018 season was my final one for the Arts Club, and what a joy it was to plan and oversee the season while at the same time welcoming our new Artistic Director, Ashlie Corcoran. We also premiered three plays: Kevin Loring’s Thanks for Giving, Jill Daum’s Forget About Tomorrow, and Melody Anderson’s Me and You. The work of our former Literary Manager/dramaturg Rachel Ditor in shepherding these works (two were Silver Commissions) from inception to production is a testament to her dedicated work in new play development for more than a decade. I have been blessed with support from Artist Liaison Stephanie Hargreaves and the outstanding production staff led by Director of Production Stephan Baeuml. Stephan, along with Technical Directors Craig Fulker, Ace Martens, and Patsy Tomkins, wonderfully oversaw the mounting of our shows on all three stages and on tour, including the Western Canadian tour of the multi-award-winning musical, Onegin, by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille, which we premiered in 2016, during our first season at the Goldcorp Stage. The opening of the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre—along with the opening of our Granville Island Stage, Revue Stage, and Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage—ranks as one of the highlights of my career. I depart from the Arts Club knowing that there is an incredible administrative team taking us into the future:

Peter Cathie White, Valerie Prodanuk, Teddy Forsyth, Kathy MacKenzie, Bryan Woo, and all of the amazing staff listed at the end of this report. Behind the scenes, the strength of the organization is reflected by our Board of Directors, led last season by Chairs Bruce Flexman and Richard Bell. In addition, I acknowledge longtime employees Ted Roberts, Jack Holmes, Caryn Fehr, Igor Rozenberg, Darren Hales, J.C. d’Almeida, Michael Gall, Ron Mill, and Pam Jakobs, as well as stage management and crews. Finally, a thank-you to Marsha Sibthorpe for being there through the trials and triumphs. I leave a legacy of an endowment at our Foundation of $1 million, raised through generous donations and matched by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Bill Millerd Artist Fund will assist those seeking to pursue a career in theatre. As I hand the artistic reins to Ashlie, I thank all who have supported the Arts Club, and me personally, over the last 46 years. Onwards!

It’s hard to believe that a year has come and gone since I first began my journey as Artistic Director. I was privileged to spend my first several months here with Bill, who generously shared his knowledge and introduced me to the incredible team he has built at the Arts Club. When I stepped into the role in a full-time capacity at the end of February, I was very impressed by the dedication and hard work of the production team, and their work paid off—the Arts Club was able to bring home seven Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards for work on three different productions: Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika; Hand to God; and Misery. I have also been fortunate to add a couple of invaluable members to the Artistic team. In the last year, we welcomed Melissa Tsang as Producer and Stephen Drover as Associate Artistic Director. 2017/2018 was a time of transition and laying the foundation for change, but it was an exciting time and I look forward to sharing the future with you.

The 2017/2018 season marked my 16th season at the Arts Club working hand in hand with Bill Millerd. What an honour it was to work with a man of his vision and talent. It changed my life, taught me about chutzpah, showmanship, and humility, and made me a better person. And I will miss it, for this was Bill’s last season, after 46 of them, as our Artistic Managing Director.

I remember my first job interview with Bill. He looked me up and down and asked me how I would sell a particular show. After stumbling a bit to provide the flashiest answer I could muster, there was a pause, a beat, and then he said, “That’ll never work.” A challenge, making me show my passion. Classic Bill. You can see images throughout this report of the productions we staged last season, and of the wonderful artists who lit up our stages. These shows were wonderfully varied in scale and scope, deliciously entertaining, and devastatingly heartfelt. Full of noise and energy and flecked with emotion so keenly felt you could hear a pin drop. They were a fitting tribute to Bill’s legend. Last season, we also welcomed our new Artistic Director, Ashlie Corcoran. Her passion for this art form and for our community is impressive and contagious. She personifies what the Arts Club has always been about—local, exciting, visionary, and entrepreneurial. The future looks bright. Thank you to our supporters: governments, foundations, corporations, subscribers, ticket buyers, and especially our donors, whose loyalty is vital for this company and this community. Thank you to our Board (and Board Chair Richard Bell), who generously give their time and expertise. And a huge thank-you to our incredible team at the Arts Club who made this season one of our best. THE JESSIE AWARDS

The annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards celebrate and promote the outstanding achievements of the Vancouver professional theatre community. Throughout the theatre season, an independent jury attends theatre productions across Vancouver. At the end of the season, this jury votes on shows in 28 categories. The 36th annual awards were held on July 16, 2018, and 12 Arts Club productions were nominated for a total of 34 individual nominations. In the Large Theatre category, Arts Club productions won 7 of the 10 awards.

THE GRANT BURNYEAT WRITING COMPETITION

The Arts Club is proud to offer a variety of educational programs for individuals and groups of all ages, including students, educators, artists, and community members. We continue to broaden and diversify our programming in order to deliver meaningful and effective learning opportunities in Metro Vancouver and across the province. In the spring of 2018, we launched the Grant Burnyeat Student Series. With generous support from Justice Grant Burnyeat, this program provides meaningful opportunities for youth to participate in the arts on a more frequent basis. By offering 30 free tickets annually to each of the 18 secondary schools in Vancouver, we are increasing access to professional

theatre in their own community. This program also provides complimentary workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, and transportation for the students. Students are invited to enter the Grant Burnyeat Writing Competition. Cash prizes are awarded to the top two students who write the strongest essays about the impact of live theatre on youth. This season, first place was awarded to Nova Grant, and second place to Sabinah Onayemi.

SILVER COMMISSIONS PROJECT & REACT: NEW PLAYS IN PROGRESS

OUR COMMITMENT TO FOSTERING AND CELEBRATING A LOCAL IDENTITY MEANS THAT WE INVEST IN LOCAL PLAYWRIGHTS AS THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR ART AND THAT WE SEEK WAYS TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW VOICES.

The 2017/2018 season included productions of several scripts that we developed; Jill Daum’s Forget About Tomorrow, the return of the Moms with the remarkably successful Mom’s the Word: Nest ½ Empty, and Kevin Loring’s Silver Commission Thanks for Giving. The Silver Commissions Project was launched 12 years ago and since then we have premiered 13 commissioned scripts. The project has proven to be a vital component of our programming and integral to our mandate. Silver Commissions that were in development during the 2017/2018 season and that were a part of the ReACT: New Plays in Progress series included It’s a Wonderful Holiday Miracle Carol by Marcus Youssef and House and Home by Jenn

Griffin. Other scripts read during ReACT included The Soldier’s Wife by Sean Harris Oliver, Mrs. Singh and Me by Munish Sharma, The Thin Man adapted by Lucia Frangione, and Inheritance by Daniel Arnold.

REMEMBERINGGEORGE GRILLS

(1941–2018)

A GREAT COMPANY IS JUST A REFLECTION OF THE PEOPLE WHO STAND BEHIND IT, AND GEORGE GRILLS WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO UNFAILINGLY SUPPORTED THE ARTS CLUB.

George and his wife, Lee, first became involved with the Arts Club as ticket buyers at the Seymour Stage. Soon they became subscribers, donors, and then eventually George joined the Board in the late 1990s. George would go on to make many important changes that would lay the groundwork for the Arts Club to become what it is today. Having sat on other charitable boards, it was George who insisted that the Directors should become donors, and that building a strong donor base was the only way an arts group would thrive. It was shortly thereafter that the Artistic Director’s Circle was formed. George and Lee, along with a small number of dedicated theatre lovers, would gather at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage’s Bruce Milley Lounge.

While the group was initially no more than a dozen, it has now grown to more than 130 households. George was also adamant that the Arts Club needed corporate philanthropic support. He introduced Vancouver business leaders to theatre and put tremendous energy into persuading companies that they had a role to play in the Arts Club’s future. George and Lee were a staple at all of the Arts Club’s events, whether it was an opening night or a new play reading, and George was always very quick to let us know exactly how he felt. George truly cared about the company’s success and put countless hours (and many dollars) into ensuring the Arts Club was on the right path. He was a true ambassador and benefactor and he will be deeply missed.

THE BILL MILLERD ARTIST FUND

In the early 1960s, the Koerner Foundation awarded Bill Millerd a grant that allowed him to attend the National Theatre School. After 46 years as Artistic Managing Director at the Arts Club, Bill wants to gift similar life-changing opportunities to other theatre artists.

In an incredible gesture of support, over 1,200 donors stepped forward to contribute to this permanent endowment fund. With matching funds provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Bill has surpassed his goal to raise $1 million. Annually, the residuals of the fund will directly support theatre artists by providing them with opportunities to develop their craft and further their artistic endeavors.

TO BILL, WITH LOVETo Bill, With Love was a tribute performance and fundraiser to celebrate the career of Bill Millerd. All proceeds from the event went toward the Bill Millerd Artist Fund in order to provide opportunities for artists in the community to hone their craft and further their education. Nearly $100,000 was raised on March 4, 2018.
