I am so happy to see students and staff settled into routines as we start October! It has been a busy yet successful first month of school. I want to take a moment to acknowledge some of our community partnerships. These relationships provide so many opportunities for our students. The Assistance League of Minneapolis/St. Paul provided free uniforms to all students. MacPhail Center for Music offers weekly music lessons to our PreK-2 nd grade students. The Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony (GTCYS) is providing violin lessons for our 3 rd and 4 th graders. We just started a fundraiser to help support some of these music programs. Keep on the lookout for how much we earn! These partnerships are all important, but our most valued partnership is with families and our West Side community. The September family meeting was a record for attendance; I hope to see even more of you this coming month! In the next few meetings, we will be talking about things such as curriculum and academics, how families can be more involved, and how we can further develop our partnership! OCTOBER 2017 RIVERVIEW NEWS In partnership with families, students and community, our vision is to be an academically excellent, caring and culturally-rich urban school. Transportation Updates We encourage you to download the MY SPPS app. It is free and provides useful updates. You can see if your child’s bus is running late, you can check the lunch menu, and so much more! Go to spps.org/bus to download the App The App reports buses 10+ minutes late Updates are available online on Riverview and SPPS websites as well If you have additional transportation questions or can’t find your child’s route, contact the Main Transportation line: 651- 696-9600. …………………… Celebrations at School As students get back into their school routines, SPPS is working to find ways to rethink classroom birthday parties and celebrations by taking the focus off of food, while incorporating more physical activity into the school day. Bringing food may exclude students with cultural restrictions and/or allergies and medical conditions. It may also put a burden on families to buy treats for the entire classroom. Please ask your teacher for fun alternatives on how to celebrate your child’s birthday. …………………… Uniforms + Cold Weather Please send your child to school with enough layers to keep them warm. Classes do go outside every day unless it is below zero. Remember that sweaters and sweatshirts need to be uniform colors - navy, light blue, or white. Students are also able to wear long-sleeve layers underneath their uniform shirts, which can be of a non- uniform color.

October is Bullying Prevention Month Bullying is defined as the following with our students at Riverview: Bullying is when someone keeps being mean to someone else, on purpose, over and over again. It is unfair and one-sided and the person it is happening to hasn't been able to make it stop. Examples of being mean are:

• Hurting someone's body or belongings • Using words to hurt someone's feelings • Leaving someone out on purpose • Getting others to be mean or to exclude someone

The Three R's of Bully Prevention are: Recognize, Report, Refuse Recognize: I know the definition of bullying, is this bullying? Is it mean on purpose? Am I able to get it to stop? Report: Reporting bullying can help you and others get help to make the bullying stop. Name adults whom you can go to report bullying. Refuse: Use a strong assertive voice, use respectful words, and refuse bullying. Tell the person doing the bullying to stop. The definition and the three R's come from a evidence-based curriculum called Second Step
