The U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and re-serve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieu-tenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in 1933. Today, the Academy offers 25 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities.

USNA Mission Statement “To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and phys-ically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future deployment in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.”

Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed “amidships,” i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second ‘s’ had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were orig-inally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor’s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, mid-shipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since.

Navy 70, Colgate 54 (Jan. 8) Navy used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to sepa-rate from Colgate and go on to post a 70-54 victory Jan. 8 in Alumni Hall. The Mids held a 15-13 lead through one quarter of play, but the lead changed hands four times in the first 75 seconds of the second quarter. The last change in that sequence came when Taylor Dunham drained a three-point shot to give the Mids a 20-19 lead. Her triple started a 13-0 run that eventually grew to 19-2. Navy also held Colgate without a made field goal for the last eight-plus minutes of the frame, which helped the Mids to a 40-26 lead at the break. Hannah Fenske scored 19 points and dished out six assists to lead the Mids in both statistics.

Service Assignments Members of the Class of 2018 learned their service assignments on Thursday, Nov. 16. Taylor Dunham received Navy surface warfare (USS McFaul, DDG 74 a destroyer based in Norfolk, Va.), Hannah Fenske received Navy nuclear submarines and Maggie Phillips received Navy pilot. The trio will be commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy upon graduating from the USNA this May.

Navy 53, Lehigh 50 After taking its largest lead of the game (14) in the third quarter, Navy had to hang on at the end to post a 53-50 victory over Lehigh. Navy led by five points after 10 minutes of play and 12 points at halftime before taking a 47-33 lead with a little more than three minutes left in the third quarter.

Lehigh started to find success on the offensive end of the court and stymied the Navy offense on the other end to close to within 49-47 with 3:50 still to play. The Moun-tain Hawks had a three-point shot on their next possession to take the lead, but after their miss Kaila Clark sank a long jumper to double Navy’s lead to four points with 2:24 left on the clock. Navy’s lead would soon reach 53-47, but it was down to 53-50 with five seconds remaining and Lehigh in possession of the ball. The Mids fouled on the inbounds play and the Mountain Hawks missed both foul shots –– the first unintentionally, the second intentionally –– with Navy able to grab the second carom. Taylor Dunham totaled 17 points thanks to five made triples, while Kaila Clark notched a double-double with 10 points and an equal number of rebounds.
