Dear Educator,

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA!

Since 1918, more than 4 million school-aged children have been introduced to classical music by The Cleveland Orchestra. Educators like you are the key to providing this unique Cleveland experience which is often the spark that lights a lifelong passion for music. For many young people school field trips are the first (and often only) opportunity to hear live music by one of the world’s top orchestras. Whether your students are in pre-school, high school, or somewhere in between, we have programs to meet your music education needs.

• MUSICAL RAINBOWS introduce students in pre-K through grade 1 to the instruments of the Orchestra, one at a time.

• EDUCATION CONCERT FIELD TRIPS introduce students to classical music performed by the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra in historic Severance Hall. Audio, print and web-based preparation tools are free to participating schools.

• MINDFUL MUSIC MOMENTS, a new program for schools that marries classical music, mindfulness techniques and technology to deliver daily 4 minute modules over the morning announcements in schools.

• FRIDAY MORNING CONCERTS are offered to high school students at a discount rate. These concerts, which are open to the general public, give students the opportunity to hear The Cleveland Orchestra in a traditional concert setting.

• TEACHER WORKSHOPS give you the tools you need to engage students in active listening and arts learning.

• SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAMS includes discounted student tickets, ensemble coaching and school music advocacy tools.

We look forward to seeing you at Severance Hall!

Sincerely,

Joan Katz NapoliSenior Director, Education & Community Programs

Mindful Music MomentsDaily Classical Music and Mindfulness for your students! The Cleveland Orchestra invites your school to participate in Mindful Music Moments, a program that marries access to classical music, technology, and ‘mindfulness’ (a concept trending heavily with many school administrators). This program has proven effective for pre-K through grade 12 students in creating a ritual to calm and focus before the school day begins. The daily 4 minute routine exposes your students to a classical music piece coupled with mindfulness techniques delivered over the morning announcements in schools. Teachers, administrators and students have reported that Mindful Music Moments provides tangible tools for mental and emotional well-being, and a deeper appreciation of classical music.

WHY SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE:• To teach and strengthen mindfulness, and introduce different calming techniques

to students

• To establish a focused environment for learning so students can start the day in a positive way

• To improve learning and behaviors

• To decrease anxiety in students

• To increase exposure to classical music

This program is easy to use. All of the work is done for you! For information on cost and details to participate please provide the following:

“Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero’s Journey”

T H E C L E V E L A N D O R C H E S T R A

Education Concerts

For The Cleveland Orchestra’s 100th Sea-son, Music Director Franz Welser-Möst has created “The Prometheus Project,” designed to provide a new lens through which to explore the music of Beethoven, both for adults (in our eve-ning concerts) and young people (in our Education Concerts) .

“The Prometheus Project” connects Pro-metheus, a Titan of Greek Mythology, and Beethoven, a titan of classical music. They are bound together in spirit by a rebellious nature, a deep love of human-kind, and their ability to overcome great obstacles to use their individual gifts to change the world.

Prometheus broke all the rules and defied Zeus by giving humans the precious gift of fire. Metaphorically, this ability to create and control fire can be seen as an essential part of giving independence and self-determination to humanity, and helping pave a means to civilization (cooking, heating, creating tools, etc.) Thus Prometheus provided the spark that gave rise to civilization, and empowered

humans to fight for justice, individual freedoms, and the greater good.

Beethoven broke rules too – musically and otherwise. He was an innovator, widening the scope of sonata, sym-

phony, concerto and quartet forms, and combining vocals and

instruments in a new way. He over-came many challenges in his personal life (e.g., raised by a single alcoholic, abusive parent, progressive deafness) to become one of the world’s greatest composers.

Beethoven was an inquisitive man raised in the Enlightenment, which directly af-fected the music he wrote. Where Prometheus gave fire to hu-mans, Beethoven gave his music, using it to express his passionate belief in justice, equality, the right to human dignity, and the goodness of humanity.

Student Work Featured in Education ConcertsA goal for the “Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero’s Journey” Education Concerts, is for students to recognize their own potential to create a better world and how the actions of one individual can make a difference. In spring, 2017, Orchestra musicians and staff worked with students and teachers at the Cleveland School of the Arts (CSA) to explore the challenges, and accomplishments of Beethoven and Prometheus, and the ways they served the greater good. Using artistic mediums (Visual and Performing Arts), and engaging core curriculum (English/Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies), and using Joseph Campbell’s classic Hero’s Journey framework, students were challenged to create work that connected to personal narratives, personal heroes, and the ways in which they envision using their own gifts to shape their future world. Select CSA student projects will be projected onto a large screen behind the Orchestra, integrating them into “Beethoven & Prometheus: A Hero’s Journey” Education Concerts.

This first-ever, multi-media Cleveland Orchestra Education Concert, explores a unique intersection between mythology and music, examining the connection between Prometheus, a Titan of Greek Mythology, and Beethoven, a titan of classical music. Bound in spirit by their creativity, rebellious nature, and a deep love of humankind, Beethoven and Prometheus both overcame great obstacles and used their individual gifts to create a better world. These concerts will feature movements from some of Beethoven’s most important symphonies accompanied by the creative output (visual art, dance, language arts and more) of students from the Cleveland School of the Arts (projected on a large screen behind the Orchestra) who were deeply engaged with Orchestra musicians last spring in an interdisciplinary “Prometheus Project” curriculum.

Through music and dramatic vignettes, this concert traces the life journey of Martin Luther King, Jr. through major events of the Civil Rights Movement; celebrating his victories, emphasizing his philosophy of non-violence, reflecting on his untimely death, and asking what we can do now to honor and fulfill his legacy. The repertoire includes music directly related to the life of Dr. King, as well as music symbolic of peaceful revolution from other periods in history, demonstrating the timeless nature of the need for social justice and unity.

Cleveland Orchestra Student Ensembles

The highly acclaimed Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) provides a unique pre-professional experience for musicians in middle and high school. Players rehearse weekly and perform in Severance Hall, are directed by a member of The Cleveland Orchestra’s conducting staff, and receive coaching from Cleveland Orchestra musicians. Membership is by competitive auditions held in May. For information, please call the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra at (216) 231-7352 or visit www.ClevelandOrchestraYouthOrchestra.com.

The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus (COYC) was founded in 1991 to help raise awareness of choral music-making in the schools of northeast Ohio and to encourage more students to continue their choral activities through college and into adulthood. Like their colleagues in the Youth Orchestra, they are in grades 9-12, from over 40 schools and communities, and are selected by competitive auditions. The COYC has the opportunity to perform concerts in the greater Cleveland community as well as on stage at Severance Hall alongside their colleagues in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. For information, please call the Chorus Office at (216) 231-7374 or email [email protected].

The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus (COCC) and Preparatory Choruses (COCPC) are open to students in grades 6-9. Members in both groups build a foundation of skills in leadership, vocal production, and musicianship, through weekly rehearsals and regular performance opportunities. The Children’s Chorus, founded in 1967 and directed by Ann Usher, performs with The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus throughout the subscription and holiday season. The Preparatory Chorus, directed by Suzanne Walters, collaborates with the Children’s Chorus on two independent concerts each season. For more information please contact the Chorus Office at (216) 231-7374 or [email protected].
