2017-18 Michigan hockey

9 NATIONAL TITLES // 19 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS // 93 ALL-AMERICANS // 2 HOBEY BAKER AWARD WINNERS

Wolverine Bites• Mel Pearson returns to Ann Arbor for his first season as head coach at Michigan. He previously served on Michigan’s coaching staff as an assistant coach from 1988-89 through 1998-99 and as associate head coach from 1999-2000 through 2010-11. Pearson is coming off a six-year stint as head coach at Michigan Tech, where he led the Huskies to a 118-92-29 overall record, including a 75-34-14 mark over the past three seasons. Under Pearson’s leader-ship, the Huskies finished the 2016-17 season ranked in the top 20 for a third consecutive year, all of them featuring 20-win campaigns. Pearson also earned two WCHA Coach of the Year honors in his time at Michigan Tech, which claimed the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking on Nov. 17, 2014.

• Michigan will be led by its five-man senior class, the second-largest group of true seniors at U-M since the 2010-11 season. This group includes for-wards Tony Calderone, Dexter Dancs and Niko Porikos, and defensemen Cutler Martin and Sam Piazza. Adding to the veteran leadership this season is Alex Roos, who joins the Michigan roster as a graduate transfer from Colorado College.

• Joining head coach Mel Pearson’s coaching staff at Michigan as Associate Head Coach is Bill Muckalt. He had a standout four-year playing career at Michigan, helping the Wolverines to 133 wins and two national championships while posting 105 career goals and 226 total points. During his senior season in 1997-98, Muckalt earned All-America first team honors and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist. Muckalt had a five-year career in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild. He previously served on Pearson’s coaching staff at Michigan Tech for four seasons. In September, Michigan announced that Muckalt is a member of the seven-member 2017 Dekers Club Hall of Fame class, joining the prestigious group of Michigan hockey alumni.

• New to Michigan’s conference schedule is former CCHA rival Notre Dame. Michigan has a 75-54-5 all-time record against Notre Dame entering the season with their last meeting coming in the 2015-16 NCAA Regional Tournament, where U-M advanced with a 3-2 overtime victory.

Breaking Down the Roster• The Wolverines return four sophomore forwards who were major contributors last season as freshmen. This group includes Jake Slaker (7G, 14A), Will Lockwood (8G, 12A), Adam Winborg (8G, 8A) and James Sanchez (6G, 7A).

• Michigan returns two upperclassman forwards who topped 15 points last season. Senior Tony Calderone recorded 15 goals and three assists while junior Cooper Marody tallied five goals and 10 assists in just 18 games played.

• Defenseman Sam Piazza is coming off his best season in a Michigan uniform and will lead a blue line corps that returns six experienced players. Piazza played in 32 games, notching a career-best six goals and eight assists. He scored the game-winning goal at Ferris State last season on Oct. 15.

• Joining Piazza (58 career games played) on defense are five players who have all seen regular time on the blue line during their Michigan careers. Senior Cutler Martin (98 GP), junior Nicholas Boka (72 GP), junior Joseph Cecconi (71 GP), sophomore Luke Martin (35 GP) and sophomore Griffin Luce (27 GP) give Michigan a lot of depth on defense heading into the 2017-18 season. Defenseman Christian Meike also returns, having played six games for the Wolverines as a freshman last season.

• In net, Michigan returns an experienced duo of sophomores in Hayden Lavigne and Jack LaFontaine. Lavigne posted a 6-6-1 record to go along with a .912 save percentage and 2.92 GAA in 13 games played. LaFontaine had a record of 1-7-1 in addition to a .911 save percentage and a 3.34 GAA in 11 games played. Junior Chad Catt, who has played two career games in net for the Wolverines, also returns this season.

• Four freshman forwards will join the Maize and Blue, including Jack Becker (Dellwood, Minn.), Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich.), Dakota Raabe (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) and Michael Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.). Becker was selected by the Boston Bruins in the seventh round (195th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, while Norris was taken by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (19th overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

• One freshman blueliner joins an experienced defensive corps, as Michigan adds Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) to the team. Hughes was selected to participate in the 2017 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo, N.Y. on Sept. 21. The annual exhibition game is for the top Amer-ican-born NHL Entry Draft eligible prospects. Hughes’ father, Jack Hughes, spent two seasons as an assistant coach in the NHL for the Boston Bruins before spending six seasons as the Director of Player Development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hughes’ mother, Ellen Hughes, was a member of the U.S. women’s national hockey team.

Norris and L. Martin DraftedFreshman Josh Norris was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (19th overall pick) in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, while sophomore defense-man Luke Martin was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round (52nd overall). Norris became the 21st first-round selection in program history, joining Zach Werenski and Kyle Connor, who most recently were taken in the first round in 2015.

Norris was No. 34 in the final NHL Scouting Service Ranking while ranking first in five categories at the 2017 NHL Scouting Combine. Martin ranked #61 among North American skaters in the final NHL Central Scouting Service rankings.

Martin joins fellow classmate Jack Lafontaine in the Carolina organization, as the rising sophomore goaltender was selected by the Hurricanes in the 2016 NHL Entry draft in the third round (75th overall). Additionally, Michigan alum and longtime Director of Player Development L.J. Scarpace recently joined the Carolina coaching staff.

Michigan has now had 67 players taken in the NHL Draft in program history. U-M has had a selection in the draft every year since 1995 and in every draft except for five since its inception in 1969 (1970, ‘71, ‘72, ‘81 and ‘95). U-M will enter the 2017-18 season with 10 drafted players on its roster.

Mel Pearson was named the ninth head coach in University of Michigan hockey history on Monday, April 24, 2017.

Pearson returns to Ann Arbor following an impressive six-year stint as head coach at Michigan Tech. There, he led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three years while winning a WCHA regular-sea-son title and a WCHA Championship in that span. Pearson registered a 118-92-29 overall record, including a 75-34-14 mark over the past three seasons.

Under Pearson’s leadership, the Huskies fin-ished the 2016-17 season ranked in the top 20 for a third consecutive year, all of them featuring 20-win campaigns. Pearson also earned two WCHA Coach of the Year honors in his time at Michigan Tech, which claimed the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking on Nov. 17, 2014.

Pearson served as a U-M assistant coach from 1988-89 through 1998-99 and as associate head coach from 1999-2000 through 2010-11. He played an integral role in developing the Michigan program into one of the most successful in the country. During his tenure, the Wolverines posted a 667-243-71 record while capturing 11 Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season titles, nine CCHA Tournament crowns, two NCAA championships (1996 and 1998), and making 11 NCAA Frozen Four appearances.

Pearson assisted head coach Red Berenson with on-ice coaching and performed many of the program’s administrative functions. He was also heavily involved in the Wolverines’ recruiting efforts, helping Michigan land the core of its 1996 and 1998 NCAA champion teams.

After he helped Michigan to the 1999-2000 CCHA regular-season championship, Pearson was awarded the Terry Flanagan Award by the American Hockey Coaches’ Association, which honors an assistant coach’s career body of work. Pearson also served as a coach with the 1996 United States World Junior Championship team, and helped the Americans to a silver medal, the country’s second-best finish at the event.

Perhaps destined to coach with the Wolverines,

High School, while playing his collegiate career out at Michigan Technological University under MacInnes (1946-50), one of college hockey’s legendary coaches.

As a collegian (1977-81), Pearson collected 56 points (21-35-56) in 97 games, helping Michigan Tech to a third-place finish at the 1981 NCAA Championship. Ironically, Pearson’s most “famous” goal was scored against the Wolverines in the championship game of the 1979 Great Lakes Invitational. He broke a 4-4 tie at 2:28 of the third overtime to give the Huskies the GLI title. The game still stands as longest in the 43-year history of the tournament.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1981, Pearson remained at his alma mater to serve as an assistant ice hockey coach on the Huskies’ staff from 1982-88.

The Flin Flon, Manitoba, native comes from a hockey family. His father, George “Mel” Pearson, played 15 seasons of professional hockey with the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League and with Minnesota of the World Hockey Association. His brother, Ted, played for the University of Wisconsin and spent time in the Calgary Flames organization.

Pearson and his wife, Susie, have three chil-dren -- Kim, Sarah and Paul -- and reside in Saline, Michigan.

Marody eager for first full season on the iceAnna Marcus | Daily Sports WriterTuesday, October 3, 2017

Fifty-three seconds into the third period Saturday night, Cooper Marody paused, just momentarily, after receiving a beautiful setup from junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi. Within seconds, he knocked a one-timer into the bottom right corner of the net, beyond the outstretched reach of the Western Ontario goal-tender.

The junior forward’s textbook goal — which came during the Michigan hockey team’s season-opening exhibition — is simply a microcosm of his style of play. His patience and ability to drown out surrounding noise while on the rink is a special characteristic of his game that many players find difficult to master. And his new head coach, Mel Pearson, was quick to note that Marody’s style of play stands out.

“He’s so patient,” Pearson said. “He’s so smart with the puck, and he sees things that maybe even a person sitting in the stands wouldn’t see, let alone a person on the ice with all the commotion going on. He has a way of just slowing the game down, even when everything’s going crazy.”

Marody’s offensive prowess in the game extended beyond his goal, as well. He registered an assist in each period, characteristic of a seasoned forward who knows how to crisply set the puck up for his teammates in a way that is almost second nature.

As a veteran Wolverine, entering his third year on the team, it makes sense that Marody has the innate capacity to create these opportunities on the ice. There is something glaring, however, that sets Marody apart from his upperclassmen counterparts: he has yet to play a full collegiate season. And last year was the most extreme case of that, as his sophomore season was slashed in half.

It’s safe to say Marody didn’t expect his career at Michigan to take the course it did.

In the midst of his elite freshman campaign — when he netted 24 points and played in 32 games — Marody fell ill with mononucleosis in mid-January, taking him off the ice for an entire month.

Though he was able to finish out his first season once healthy again, the illness resulted in a serious ramification for his sophomore year: he was academically ineligible to play for the Wolverines during the fall semester.

While Marody still practiced every day with the team, the time away from the sport he loved was painful.

“Any time a sport you love gets taken away from you and you can’t play, if you’re a competitor you feel it,” Pearson said. “And I think (Cooper) felt it. I think it was tough on him last year. Now, he’s reenergized and he knows if he continues to do the things that he needs to do that he’s going to play and play all year, and be a big part of our team.”

Added Cecconi: “I’ve known Coop since before I got to school, and it definitely hurt him a bit not being able to play the first half of the season,” he said. “The first couple games of the season are times to adjust and get back into hockey. And for him not to have that was kind of a blow to our team and himself, but he came back strong.”

And come back he did. Starting with the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 29-30, Marody played out the final 18 games of his sophomore season. He notched 15 points through the end of the year, en route to being one of the standouts in an otherwise relatively lifeless Michigan offense.

Marody’s hat trick in the Wolverines’ 5-4 victory over Ohio State on Feb. 3 epitomized his resurgence. It was the most goals anyone on the team scored in a game last season.

Reflecting back on last year’s adversities, Marody couldn’t be more ready to move on and begin what he hopes to be his first complete season on the Wolverine roster. And a goal paired with three assists in the exhibition game is certainly not a lousy way to start.

“It was an unfortunate situation, but it’s over now,” Marody said. “I’ve learned a lot of valuable things from it, and I’m just looking to move forward from that. It’s obviously tough, but you learn from it, and move forward. You’re a better person because of it.

“Hopefully, I’ll stay healthy the whole season. It will be my first full season here at Michigan, so I’m very excited about that. It will be good to continue to develop that chemistry with my linemates, and I’m just very, very excited to play a whole season.”

Marody had no way of foreseeing the path his collegiate hockey career was going to take, and without a doubt would have preferred for his sophomore year to take on a different narrative.

That being said, Marody’s rare circumstance allowed him to gain perspective — not just on this season, but for the rest of his life as well.

“(I now know) that it could always be worse,” Marody said. “Like if you have a bad day at practice, you’re just lucky that you’re healthy and able to play. So if you don’t have a good day, if you don’t have a good shift, if you don’t have a good game, you can just be thankful that you’re playing and healthy. And then nothing else that’s wrong is that big of a deal. So to just keep that positive mindset, every day coming to the rink, no matter what happens.”

Pearson brings confidence, now Michigan needs to back it up Mike Persak | Daily Sports EditorTuesday, September 19, 2017

It’s an unenviable task to take over a coaching job from the greatest coach in the history of a program.

That’s exactly what Mel Pearson is doing with the Michigan hockey team.

For Pearson, though, taking over for Red Berenson — the Wolverines’ coach for the last 34 seasons — isn’t as enormous an undertaking as it may seem. He served under Berenson in different capacities for 22 seasons before taking his first head coaching job with Michigan Tech in 2011. Pearson knows Ann Arbor, and he knows Michigan hockey.

He’s surrounded himself with people he’s familiar with, too. Associate head coach Bill Muckalt won two NCAA Championships as a player with the Wolverines while Pearson was behind the bench, and he was an assistant coach under Pearson with the Huskies. Assistant coaches Brian Wiseman and Steve Shields were each recruited by Pearson to play at Michigan, and they coached with Pearson once their playing careers were finished.

For one, Pearson and Muckalt have a tenure of turning around struggling hockey programs. They did it together with Michigan Tech, bringing them from a cellar-dwelling team to two NCAA Tournament appearances in just five years, and Muckalt won a Davis Cup with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm for the first time in the franchise’s history.

But whether or not they can turn around a Wolverines team that was the third-worst in the country in Corsi-percentage remains to be seen.Additionally, there are the highly-touted freshmen, who look like they’ll make immediate, positive impacts. Namely, forward Josh Norris — a first-round NHL draft pick in 2017 — and defenseman Quinn Hughes — a projected first-round pick for the upcoming 2018 draft — were picked by Pearson as first-year players who have impressed him.

Even their contributions aren’t a sure thing yet, though.

Still, at Michigan’s Media Day on Tuesday, players and coaches alike repeated that there’s a greater sense of optimism this season.

“I think it’s just an excitement of everybody having a fresh start,” said senior forward Dexter Dancs. “I don’t think Red and Mel’s coaching styles are too different but it’s just the excitement of having a new guy and having a clean slate.”

Added sophomore forward Will Lockwood: “Mel’s bringing a lot of energy, and we have a lot of new guys, and everyone fits well. I think a lot of the chemistry between guys is great which has brought the mood in the locker room up too.”

This talk of positive feelings came the day after the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ poll predicted the Wolverines would finish second to last in the conference. Many of the Michigan players shook it off as something they try not to pay attention to, but all of them knew about the poll, and some of them let on that it will be used as motivation.

“We don’t try and look too much into that,” Dancs said. “But it’s obviously a little bit of an F you, I guess you could say, to us. We’re excited to prove everyone wrong.

“It was a little bit of a topic of conversation, but, you know what, we’re not looking too much into it. But it will definitely be in the back of our mind when we play every team this year.”

That type of language ran up and down the team. Whether it was sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne saying the Wolverines will “come out as the underdog and finish on top,” or Muckalt saying the beauty of the game is that it isn’t on paper, everybody relayed a feeling of confidence that this will be a successful team. And if you want to know where the confidence comes from, look no further than the new head coach.

“I’m not a forecaster, but if I had to pick, I’d pick us to win the league,” Pearson said. “We’ve got all the things we need to be successful, but you’ve got to go out and execute. You’ve got to go out and prove it.”

And therein lies the challenge. Despite all the talented young players, the grizzled veterans who have been through the ups and downs of the last few seasons and the new head coach with a seemingly magic touch, Michigan still has to perform on the ice.

The Wolverines have talked the talk. Now, when the regular season begins on Oct. 6, they need to walk the walk.

Defensive performance part of Pearson’s master planRobert Hefter | Daily Sports WriterMonday, October 2, 2017

The Michigan hockey team’s 10 goals against Western Ontario on Saturday night was a spectacle of an offensive performance. What many overlooked, though, was how pivotal the defense was in securing those goals.

Senior defenseman Cutler Martin’s snipe past the opposing goaltender for the Wolverines’ eighth goal against the Mustangs was evidence of such.“We have to understand and get in the habit of moving the puck up quick,” said Michigan coach Mel Pearson. “We want to be a quick transition team and try to go from our defensive zone to the offensive zone as quick as we can.”

Pearson’s sentiment is consistent with the way the Wolverines’ blueliners performed in their first exhibition match.

“I think that coming back — this is going to be my fourth year — the defense has a good footing on what we need to do,” Martin said prior to the exhibition Saturday. “We need to play defense first, have that mindset, be aggressive, be mean on the ice.”

And mean they were.

Immediately at the onset of the matchup, sophomore defenseman Luke Martin fired off a shot from the blue line that found its way into the net off a deflection from senior forward Dexter Dancs.

Throughout the night, the defense simultaneously protected the Michigan net while forcing a plethora of scoring opportunities for the offense, giving the whole squad a weapon behind the blue line.

In the second period, Martin assisted fifth-year senior forward Alex Roos, and junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi assisted senior forward Tony Calderone. Then, in the third period, Luke Martin assisted junior forward Cooper Marody, junior defenseman Nicholas Boka assisted Martin, Cecconi assisted sophomore forward Jake Slaker and Boka again assisted sophomore forward James Sanchez.

In total, the Wolverines’ defense racked up nine points, proving just how multi-faceted the team may be this year.

From the crisp passing to the multitude of scoring opportunities from every point around the ice, the Michigan offensive effort — which includes the defense in this scenario — seemed cool, composed and deadly.

“I think it’s guys just buying into the system,” Calderone said. “I think a lot of guys are starting to hold onto the puck more, getting more confident.”

In a game that most regard as an easy matchup, the Wolverines certainly showed that their aggressive mentality works.

And while some might argue Saturday’s outburst came in a meaningless exhibition game, one would only need to look back at last year’s exhibition for a sign of growth. Against Windsor, last season’s Michigan defense recorded zero points. This much of an improvement in a year’s time shows that Pearson’s master plan may result in a higher-powered attack from both ends of the ice.

5 things to know about the Michigan Wolverines hockey teamGeorge Sipple | Detroit Free PressTuesday, September 19, 2017

New coaches, new players and a new Big Ten conference foe were among the biggest topics at Michigan hockey media day at Yost Ice Arena this afternoon. Detroit Free Press sports writer George Sipple looks at five things to watch as U-M hockey moves into a new era after the retirement of coach Red Berenson.

1. New head coach Mel Pearson: An assistant under Berenson from 1998 to 2011, Pearson took on a big challenge when he returned to his alma mater, Mich-igan Tech, and turned that program around. Now he’s tasked with replacing a legend and proving that he was the right choice for one of the coveted jobs in college hockey. Pearson has assembled a rock star coaching staff of former U-M players. He retained Brian Wiseman and volunteer assistant Steve Shields, then hired Bill Muckalt, his former assistant at Michigan Tech.

“I’m excited,” Pearson said. “We’ve only been on the ice for a couple weeks, for two hours per week. So it doesn’t give you a lot of time, but in those two weeks I’ve seen some great improvement and obviously some great enthusiasm on the ice. We’re excited. We just want to start playing some games.”

2. The Wolverines aren’t happy that they were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll by Big Ten coaches. “That’s how they view us and that’s their opinion,” Pearson said. “We’re out to prove them wrong. Whether you’re picked to win the league or picked to come in last in the league, you have something to prove. So we’ve got a lot to prove, but we’re not concerned by what the coaches think. We’re concerned about how we play and getting better every day. That should be just a little extra motivation.”

Pearson said he’s not a forecaster, but “if I had to pick, I’d pick us to win the league.”He’s certainly not trying to temper expectations in his first season. “We should be disappointed in that,” Pearson said of the poll. “You don’t want to put a lot of stock on polls, obviously, but still, we get it. We understand where people think about us. We have some work to do.”

3. Forward Josh Norris and defenseman Quinn Hughes are going to be fun players to watch. While Pearson’s fellow Big Ten coaches didn’t give the team love in the preseason poll, they did select Norris and Hughes, as well as returning forward Will Lockwood, as preseason players to watch.

Norris, from Oxford, and Hughes, are expected to be major impact players this season for the Wolverines. Norris was drafted 19th overall by the Sharks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Hughes is considered a top prospect for the 2018 draft.

“I think I’m going to have to take a picture and send it to him today,” Norris said when asked what his father, former Michigan State forward Dwayne Norris (1988-1992), thinks about him finally wearing maize and blue.

4. Pearson and his staff need to get more out of returning players. Nobody really expected Tony Calderone to lead the Wolverines with 15 goals last season. Will Lockwood dealt with a shoulder injury last season and should improve on last year’s totals: eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 30 games. A full season for Cooper Marody should result in a lot more offense for the Wolverines. He was academically ineligible for the first half of the season, but finished with five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 18 games. The Wolverines need more from Dexter Dancs (one goal) and Brendan Warren (three goals).

“It’s a fresh start for everyone,” Dancs said. “It’s no secret I haven’t had the best three years here. Haven’t played as well as I’ve wanted to or the coaching staff wanted me to.”

5. The Wolverines are looking forward to the addition of Notre Dame as a Big Ten opponent this season. The Wolverines visit South Bend in early January and host the Fighting Irish in mid-February. “That adds another four tough games to our schedule, but we really look forward to that,” said Will Lockwood. “Hopefully the outcome is in our favor.

“Right away the rivalry will kind of show itself…. I think of every Big Ten game as a rivalry game. We’re going to take it as that. I think the atmosphere and the speed of the game will show.”

Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson looking forward to picking Jim Harbaugh’s brainRyan Zuke | MLiveTuesday, September 19, 2017

Michigan’s Mel Pearson isn’t afraid to bounce ideas off other prominent coaching figures. It didn’t take long for the Wolverines’ first-year head hockey coach, who was hired in April to replace legendary Red Berenson, to begin picking the brains of other Michigan coaches.

Speaking at Michigan hockey media day inside Yost Ice Arena on Tuesday, Pearson said he has had brief interactions with enigmatic football coach Jim Har-baugh since his hire, and he is looking forward to more in-depth conversations.

“Me and coach Harbaugh and coach Don Brown (defensive coordinator) one day got talking,” Pearson said. “I am looking forward to having more interactions with him (Harbaugh), just picking his brains, too. How he manages his team.

“I think it is so important this day and age to be able to manage young people, from how you let them use their cell phones and different things on the road. There are so many things we can talk about.”Pearson, 58, is no stranger at Michigan. He coached under Berenson for 23 years prior to spending the past six as the head coach at Michigan Tech.

Pearson developed a strong relationship with men’s basketball coach John Beilein when Pearson previously was at Michigan. The two have stayed in touch, and Beilein has been a valuable resource for Pearson.“It’s always nice to be back and see John,” Pearson said. “(He has been helpful with things) from travel to managing teams, and since I’ve been back, a lot of little things. There are a lot of different things that have happened in the last six years, with time management things with our student-athletes. Just to talk about general things such as managing your team has been most important.”

The most impactful resource for Pearson, other than his current coaching staff, has been Berenson.Although Berenson retired in April after 33 years behind the Michigan bench, he remains involved with the university as a special adviser to athletic director Warde Manuel.

Pearson and Berenson communicate on a regular basis, which has helped expedite the transition process.

“We talk quite a bit,” Pearson said. “I just saw Red this morning. Probably daily we cross paths or are on the phone, which is great. We share a lot of different ideas. He is a great resource to help me understand some of the players and maybe what they need to work at, which I may not be as familiar with here.

“He is such a great hockey guy, has such a great hockey mind. It is good to bounce things off him. It is nice to have someone here like him that you can go to. He called me the other day and said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I come over to practice?’ That is the way he is. I said, ‘Red, the door is open. You can come whenever you want. You are always invited here and we’d love to have you here.’ I don’t think he wants to get in the way, but I don’t think he could ever get in the way.”Pearson will make his Michigan head coaching debut Sept. 30 in an exhibition game against Western Ontario at Yost. The Wolverines open the regular season Oct. 6 at St. Lawrence.

“I’m excited,” Pearson said. “We only have been on the ice a couple weeks for two hours per week, so that doesn’t give me a lot of time. But in those two weeks I have seen some great improvement and some great enthusiasm on the ice, so we are excited. We just want to start playing some games.”
