(See also the lists for baptism and confirmation at the two episcopal Visits). Please pray for them and for their families.

House Blessings In recent weeks the new homes of Margot Miller, Helen Redwood and Bob and Elaine Taylor have been hallowed by Father David. If you are moving to a new home please let the Parish Office know so that we can arrange for your house to be blessed.

Holy MatrimonyPlease pray for those who have been married recently or who will be married in the coming weeks, and amongst them for Phillip Duffell and Alexandra Strickland-Skailes who will minister the sacrament of holy matrimony to each other on 1st July.

Rest in Peace Please pray for the souls of all those who have died recently, and amongst them for Gary David Chapman whose funeral was held in church.

Throughout the year we pray for the souls of loved ones on the anniversary of their death. Each year families remember loved ones who have died by dedicating memorial flowers in the church on the weekend in which they are included in our prayers. In the coming weeks flowers will be placed in church in loving memory of: Peter Terry, Dagmar Booker and Del Finch (pictured). Please pray for their souls, and for all who continue to mourn.

Worship & DiscipleshipPat.onal Festival & Episcopal Visit

We were delighted to welcome Bishop Peter Stuart, the Acting

Bishop of Newcastle, on his episcopal visit to the parish on the

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on Sunday 25th June.

Bishop Peter was with us at the Patronal Festival Sung Mass to

preside, teach us, administer the sacraments of baptism and

confirmation and receive members into communicant

membership of the Anglican Church of Australia.

It has been an exciting time for the Ministry Staff Team to watch our catechumens grow in their faith as they have journeyed through the formation process. Our young catechumens have been engaged in a programme called Crash, and 18 adults have been in sessions entitled Understanding Anglicanism.

Our Patronal Festival Mass was a great time of hope for us, and a reminder that there are many hope-filled days ahead for our congregations at Saint Peter’s, as we celebrated with and were inspired by those taking a step forward in faith.

Following the Sung Mass Bishop Peter met with the Parish Council to encourage them in their work, and then a large group of parishioners filled the hall for our Parish Lunch.

Please continue to pray for Bishop Peter and his senior staff team as he leads the Diocese through this vacancy period.

Church Family NewsWelcome to Nicholas and Isabelle We were delighted to welcome Nicholas Kramarzewski and Isabelle Bridges into the Body of Christ as they were baptised in a beautiful service following the Sung Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (Sunday 18th June).

Nicholas and Isabelle are the great grand children of Gwen Gibbon, and are pictured with her in this photo taken after the service. We congratulate Gwen and welcome Nicholas and Isabelle into the Church!

Welcome to Lincoln Lincoln Ryder was given a liturgical welcome into our Church community during the 7.30 am Holy Eucharist on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.

Lincoln has been in church on most Sundays with his mother since he was born in the early hours of the new year on 1st January 2017.

Lincoln travelled with his parents Aaron and Michelle Ryder to America a few days after he was officially welcomed into our Church community. During the trip he will be baptised into the Body of Christ.

We look forward to their safe return to us in the coming weeks.

Sharing our FaithPrayers for School Camp Kayne, Jakob, Lachlan and Robert worship with us at the 9.30 am Sung Mass. Kayne and Jakob serve in the sanctuary and Robert sings in the Junior Choir.

Kayne, Jakob and Lachlan recently decided to offer Morning and Evening Prayer services at their school camp. Father David prepared booklets for them to use and suggested that they read the Book of Jonah and read Psalm 119 divided into sections in each of the services across the days of the camp.

Kayne, Lachlan, and Jakob (who are all in their Higher School Certificate year) led the services and a number of their school friends attended and joined in, including Robert from our Junior Choir who insisted that next time they need to have some singing as well! The boys said that the services were well received, and their friends were pleased to join in these times of prayer and reflection at camp. Jakob was baptised and confirmed and Kayne was confirmed at the Patronal Festival. We are inspired by their desire to share their faith with others and are glad that they are part of our life.

Ministry ApprenticesOrdination Date Announced for ScoO & Jesse

Earlier this year Bishop John Ford, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Murray in South Australia, accepted our Parish Ministry Apprentice Jesse Poole, and our former Parish Ministry Apprentice Scott Mudd as Candidates for Ordination in his Diocese.

Both Jesse and Scott met Bishop John when he was a house guest in the Rectory last year, and they subsequently began a process of exploring the possibility of serving in ordained ministry in the Anglican Church in South Australia.

Bishop John has now announced his intention, God willing, to make Jesse and Scott deacons on Saturday 9th December 2017 at an Ordination Mass in his Cathedral in Murray Bridge.

Jesse and Scott will serve as transitional deacons for a period of time in the Diocese of The Murray before they are ordained as priests in the Church of God to continue to serve in that Diocese.

Jesse will have been with us for two years as Father David’s ministry apprentice when he leaves us to serve in the Parish of Victor Harbor, in the churches of Saint Augustine and Saint Christopher, on the coast of South Australia. The beachside culture is familiar to Jesse, having grown up in Forster. He says that whilst a sea change is welcome, he will miss his Saint Peter's family dearly.

Scott and Mel will be moving to the Riverland Pastoral District where Scott will be the Deacon Assistant across the seven churches of the district. Scott says that this district in the northern reaches of the diocese will feel just like home, with a climate and culture similar to that of the Hunter Valley. Scott is looking forward to being close to the excellent South Australian wine region. Scott was Father David’s ministry apprentice during 2015 and returned to the Parish this year in an informal formation relationship requested by Bishop John.

Whilst we are thrilled for them and know that they will be a great gift to the congregations that will be receiving them, we also know that we will miss Jesse, Scott and Melissa greatly. They will continue to be in the Parish until the end of November as they continue to prepare for ordained ministry under Father David’s supervision.

We are planning to have the opportunity to farewell Jesse, Scott and Melissa, and particularly to mark the end of Jesse’s two years of ministry with us during the 9.30 am Sung Mass on the last Sunday of the Christian Year, Sunday 26th November, the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the Universal King and at a Parish lunch following masses on that day. Please mark the date in your diary. Please also continue to pray for Jesse, Scott and Melissa as they prepare for ordained ministry, and for Bishop John and the clergy and people of the Diocese of The Murray.

Parishioner in ProfileKer.) BrGce Kerry was in conversation with Elizabeth Brown

Kerry grew up in Old Mount Druitt, Western Sydney with her parents and younger brother. Kerry was educated in the Catholic school system, attending Saint Joseph’s at Rooty Hill, Saint Catherine’s in Westmead, then Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta, where she had to leave before the end of Year 11 due to health problems relating to a lack of energy.

For a time nothing more was thought about this lethargy and Kerry went to Penrith TAFE to undertake secretarial studies.

After this, she went for an interview to work in the Government Tax office, which required her to go for a medical check up. It was here that they realised that Kerry’s lack of energy had a significant cause: they discovered that she had a hole in her heart about the size of a 20 cent coin, that had been undetected for the past 18 years. Kerry had open heart surgery, one of the youngest to receive this treatment at that time, and her life expectancy went from 30 to a normal life span.

Even though Kerry then went on to finish the secretarial course, and move into the tax office job that had been left open for her, after 4 years she decided that she wanted more. Her plan was to study again – first in human resources and then an associate law degree.

Through all of this, as a result of her health problems being addressed, and having a new lease on life, Kerry has had many adventurous experiences, from caving, scuba and skin diving, acrobatics, aeroplanes, and she learnt how to sail, even learning how to navigate using a sextant.

One particularly thrilling (and terrifying!) instance was when she was on a yacht coming back from Queensland: the motor would not start, the waves and wind were savage, and the only other person on board became very sick. Kerry had to skipper the yacht all the way home. She said that she was pleased that she did it, but “it was a nightmare!” Kerry’s thought was “my heart’s working - I want to make the most of it!”

In more recent years Kerry sticks to jive, Latin and ballroom dancing, and has just taken up drawing and painting classes.

While she was a secretary, Kerry was introduced to Nicholas, a young business manager, and the two struck up a very close bond – with him proposing after just a few months of dating. Kerry and Nicholas moved to Adelaide due to a job transfer. After they arrived Kerry found out that she was pregnant with her beautiful daughter Sonia. Nicholas was made redundant not too long afterwards and the couple bought a coffee shop. The day after they signed the lease, Nicholas was offered a government job – which resulted in Kerry taking care of the coffee shop on her own with a two year old! After managing heroically for 8 months they left Adelaide for the Central Coast.

Unfortunately things became difficult for the two of them which led to a separation, and later divorce. Kerry went to live with her mother with her daughter and her boxer dog, and says it was the best decision she has made. Even though Kerry was educated in the Roman Catholic system faith was not a major part of her life, her family were non-practising Catholics and would at times attend Mass when made to, but Kerry did not really understand what it was all about. She described herself after this as ‘agnostic’.

Kerry with Bishop Peter, having been Received into the Anglican Church

Page 9: 2017-07 Cross and Keys INSIDE PAGES B&W - FINAL...inspired by those taking a step forward in faith. Following the Sung Mass Bishop Peter met with the Parish Council to encourage them

At times Kerry tried to get back into Church when Sonia was young, but was not accepted due to her divorce. This led to a lot of hurt for her.

Some years later Kerry’s daughter Sonia became a Christian in High School. Sonia started asking Kerry to come to Church with her, saying that she was lonely. Kerry attended a few times and in 2011 decided to make a deeper commitment, saying to herself “you are going to Church anyway, so take this opportunity, do it!” This awoke in her a hunger for faith, and she began to read everything to do with Jesus that she could put her hands on.

Kerry joined us at Saint Peter’s twelve months ago through an unlikely avenue: her dog! She had a neurotic pup, much in need of obedience training, which unfortunately occurred at the same time as the morning church service that she had been attending. She looked around for some months for an evening service that she could attend, and on one occasion visited another local church on a Sunday evening only to find that it was closed.

Looking around, something drew her eye to the lights on the hill at William Street. She noticed all the cars parked outside, and as she drove up, the light from the stained glass windows looked so warm and welcoming that she decided to go in and see what was going on. On that evening we were celebrating our Patronal Festival with Evensong and Kerry stayed to worship with us. Kerry says that she felt welcome and began attending the Sunday afternoon Petrus Gatherings. From this she started attending the Esther Community Bible study and since the dog obedience classes ended, Kerry now worships with us at the Sung Mass on Sunday mornings.

Kerry says that at Saint Peter’s she has found encouragement and welcome. She enjoys the reverence of Sung Mass, and the intellectual, yet emotional conversations she can have in the Esther Community. Kerry says, “it feels like home to me.”

At this year’s Patronal Festival, one year on from when Kerry first visited us, she was received by Bishop Peter into communicant membership of the Anglican Church of Australia. We thank God that Kerry is part of our community.

Building CommunityFashion Parade The catwalks of Paris had nothing on Saint Peter’s Parish Hall at the recent Fashion Parade. New season styles were provided by Donna Lou Fashions, modelled by members of the congregations (pictured with Judi). Once the buying frenzy was finished, the Devonshire Afternoon Tea was enjoyed as everyone compared their bargains.

Thank you to Judi Moore and the Fundraising Group for organising another lovely afternoon which resulted in over $900 being raised for the maintenance of the church building.

Mission Partnerships Overseas Mission Lunch The first of our two mission lunches in 2017 was held on Sunday 28th May. Our Guest Speaker was Father John Deane, the Executive Director of the Anglican Board of Mission (ABM) who spoke to us about the work of ABM around the world.

During the weekend masses Father John also spoke about ABM’s support for aboriginal and indigenous ministries.

ABM is our primary mission partner, and we were delighted to welcome Father John. Given his high profile international role we were pleased to welcome a number of visitors from neighbouring parishes who came to hear Father John speak, along with members of our own parish.

Father John gave us some insight into the projects that Saint Peter’s supports through our mission giving and how they are progressing. It is rewarding to hear that in our small way we are helping to support the mission work of the Church overseas and in remote areas in Australia through partnering with ABM.

We thank Yvonne Hinde, our Parish Mission Giving Secretary, and the team who worked so hard to ensure that we had such a wonderful day.

The lunch and associated activities raised over $2,000, and a further $750 was raised through the coin collection from the mission pigs. Our mission target for 2017 is $12,000. Of this, $7,500 will be distributed to programmes through ABM. Please continue to pray for the work of ABM and their partners.

You can visit our website to see the photo gallery of all of the photos from our mission lunch.

Parish GardensDo You Have a Ute or Trailer? Very often our Gardening Team need to move equipment or remove garden waste and have no way of easily doing this.   We would be grateful for the use of a ute or a trailer that could be made available to us on a needs basis.  If you are able to assist, please contact Charlotte Brock on 0427 306 102. Thank you.

Community OutreachBackpacks for RefGgee Children We are very grateful to members of the congregations who responded quickly to a request received by Father David to provide 20 school back packs to newly arrived Syrian refugee children who are settling with their families in the Hunter Region.

This project relates directly to the third mark of mission of the Anglican Church: ‘to respond to human need by loving service’.

We received $1,000 from parishioners in the first week and Jesse was then able to go shopping and prepare back packs filled with stationery, a lunchbox, a USB memory stick, a calculator, pencils and pens and other school equipment. These back packs have now been delivered to the families as a practical expression of our welcome and support for them.

In the following weeks an additional $500 was received from parishioners and we are now preparing a further 10 school back packs for distribution to other refugee families. The project was picked up by a number of news outlets who reported on the story in print and online. Thank you to all those who assisted in giving these children a good start in their educational lives here. We know that a productive and happy time at school will provide the best foundations for these children to thrive here in Australia. We are glad to play a small part in assisting them and we welcome them to Australia!

Worship & DiscipleshipCompline Night Prayer On the second Wednesday evening of each month, a small group is gathering for Compline Night Prayer in the quietness of the church to offer praise and worship to God. The monthly service provides the opportunity for quiet reflection as we sing and pray together at the end of the day. This year we are focusing on the Parables of Jesus. In June Father David introduced the parables in general for us, and focused our attention particularly on the Parable of the Talents.

We next gather on Wednesday 12th July at 7 pm in church. During the service Scott will be leading us in a reflection on the Parable of the Sower. We warmly invite you to be with us as we pray together at the end of the day using this ancient service which has been sung by the Church down through the centuries. You do not need to be a singer or know anything about Compline to participate - we are all novices together!

Families’ MinistriesMessy Workshop Kimbalee Hodges and Jesse represented the Parish at the Diocese’s Messy Church workshop in June. The workshop was held at Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College and provided the opportunity for leaders from around the Diocese to explore ministry for children and families.

Kimbalee and Jesse had the opportunity to hear about the core values of all-age ministry in our in the Messy Church programme, and to reflect with Messy Church leaders from other parishes on the call to minister to communities with different needs and cultures than those which are currently dominant in our congregations through singing, drawing, and interacting in different ways to express Jesus’ love. The Ministry Staff Team will now reflect together on what we can learn from the workshop for our families' ministry programmes.

Neighbouring ChurchesFarewell to Uniting Church Minister On Sunday 4th June Father David, Scott and Richard Fellows attended the closure of ministry service for The Reverend Warwick Cadenhead at Wesley East Maitland Uniting Church. Warwick has served the various congregations in the Uniting Church in this area since February 2008, and we are grateful for the friendship that has developed between us and the Uniting congregations over these years.

Warwick has now been called to serve in the Uniting congregation of Toronto. We wish him and his family well in their new ministry. We also pray for the congregation of Maitland Eastside Uniting as they begin the process of calling a new minister.

Community OutreachSaint Peter’s Emergency Relief We continue to be grateful for the support that we receive from the congregations at Saint Peter’s, other parishes and schools and the local community, each of which assist us in providing services to our clients in partnership with the Samaritans Foundation. At the end of May the East Maitland Bowling Club gave a generous grant of $3,500 to our work and members of the team attended a ceremony to receive the grant on behalf of our congregations. In addition, Saint Peter's Church also received a grant of $500 at the same ceremony, to assist with other community support activities for which we are very thankful.

Thank you to all those who put grocery items in the baskets at the back of church to support our Emergency Relief clients. This month, in addition to our Winter Appeal for blankets, and the usual requests for tinned tuna, cereals and pasta sauces, we are asking the congregations to consider donating cleaning products, such as dishwashing liquid, washing power, fabric softener, and spray ’n wipe. These items can make a big dent in the average family budget.

Family MinistriesSaint Peter’s Toy Exchange With so many children involved in our programmes such as Music Time, Play Time, Fun Time and God Time, the Ministry Team are experimenting with the idea of providing a space for families to exchange toys, clothes, and books.

On Friday 14th July from 10 am to 1 pm, we will be having a Toy Exchange in the Parish Hall. This is not a fundraising activity, but a way of trying to assist families to exchange items that they no longer need for other items. There will be craft tables and toys to keep the children occupied while parents and grandparents will be occupied by trading tables and the coffee van. We hope that this may be a useful way of assisting families and building community that can be repeated in the future.

Most importantly we need to advertise this event so that people know about it. Please pass the details on to friends and family, and if you can assist on the day please let Jesse know.

Local Cubs Visit Church At the end of May Father David welcomed the East Maitland Cub Group to our church for a tour of the building and to find out more about Christianity.

The cubs had the opportunity to explore the building, hear about what Christians believe, and one cub even dressed up in priest’s vestments.

Last year over 20 scouts completed their Faith Awareness badge over four evenings in the church with Father David and it is hoped that some of the cubs will return to the church later in the year to complete their Faith Awareness badge as well.

These activities are renewing the connections between the cubs and scouts and our Parish, which originally established the groups.

George Sutherland has fond memories of being instrumental in forming and leading the Third East Maitland Scout Troop on behalf of the Parish. Pictured here is a photo taken in 1965 at a time when only boys linked to Saint Peter’s Church were able to join the troop.

StewardshipRegGlar Giving Boxes of giving envelopes for the coming year are now available at the back of the church. We invite you to collect a box next time you are in church. The boxes contain sufficient envelopes for each week for the coming twelve months.

Would you be willing to give your regular offering electronically? The Parish Council is asking all those who regularly give to the life of the Parish to consider doing so electronically. Giving regularly by bank transfer is simple to set up and saves having to remember your giving envelopes each week. It also reduces security risks on the church site. There are two ways to set this up:

If you have access to the internet and already use electronic banking for other payments you can set this up from within your bank’s website;

If not, you can visit your local bank branch and ask the staff to arrange it for you.

The Parish’s bank details are: Saint Peter’s Anglican Church Working Account BSB: 035-805, Account Number: 0040464 Reference: St Peter’s Giving.

It is important for you to know that your giving will remain confidential and will not appear on any financial papers that are distributed to the Resourcing Team or any other group. Yvonne Hinde our Treasurer is available to help you. Please contact Yvonne at [email protected] or on 0417 727 098 if you would like to discuss this confidentially.

Building CommunityNew Name Badges At the beginning of May the Diocese of Newcastle launched a new logo, which will gradually become the normal image for parishes and agencies. Over the coming weeks you will notice the new logo being used on materials associated with our Parish.

Anyone who wishes to update their name badge is welcome to order a new one, and all those who do not currently have a badge are invited to purchase one to help us to know each other’s ¯names. There are two sizes of badges, and the choice of either a metal fastener or pin. All badges cost $10. Order forms are available at the back of the church or from the Parish Office.

Building CommunitySunday Aster]oon Enter^ainment

We are looking forward to our next Sunday afternoon of entertainment on

Sunday 20th August at 3.30 pm for 4 pm in the parish hall. We will have

the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, share food and drinks and

watch the highly acclaimed film ‘Quartet’ starring Maggie Smith and Billy

Connolly. The cost is $20 including food and soft drinks or wine. Please

mark this date in your diary and sign up at the back of church in due course. For more information please contact Judi Moore on (02) 4930 0888.
