SECTION 1: CO-ORDINATION ARRANGEMENTS (GENERAL)

1. The pilot/operator is requested to telephone the ATC authorities at Section 2 prior to departure in order to notify or update the sortie details including area(s) of operation and planned levels (quoting the ACN Reference). A minimum of 24 hours’ notice should be given unless specified in Section 2.

2. There may be other aircraft and/or activities outside Controlled/Regulated Airspace unknown to ATC.

3. The carriage and operation of a serviceable transponder (including Mode ‘C’) has been specified.

4. The pilot will be responsible for obtaining all necessary ATC clearances and for maintaining R/T contact with appropriate ATC authorities.

5. The pilot/operator will be responsible for obtaining prior clearances to enter any UK Danger Areas affected by the flight profile from the appropriate Range Control Authority unless this is specifically detailed in Section 2.

6. Other Unusual Aerial Activities (UAAs) may be notified to SARG and may take place within the airspace encompassed by this survey. The pilot/operator is to ensure that UK Daily NOTAM Nav Warnings are consulted prior to each flight.

7. All flights within Controlled Airspace are subject to the requirements of a Flight Plan in accordance with UK AIP ENR1.10. The ACN Reference should be entered into Field 18 of the Flight Plan together with any relevant ‘special handling’ codes.

8. Flight prioritisation and Non-Deviating Status is in accordance with the information specified on the ACN Cover. Such status may be afforded to part or all of the flight – see Section 2.

9. Availability of an ATS from Swanwick (Mil) or Western Radar is subject to unit capacity, priorities and limitations of radar and radio coverage. Minimum pre-flight notification as per UK AIP ENR 1.6 unless otherwise specified in Section 2 of this ACN.

PUBLICATIONS AND CHANGES

10. The activity area may lie within Controlled and Uncontrolled Airspace as well as airspace reserved for military use. Aircrew are to thoroughly familiarise themselves with UK airspace structures and procedures, in particular those laid down within the UK Aeronautical Information Publication (UK AIP), ENR 1.1 and be fully conversant with UK Flight Information Services in accordance with UK CAP 493 (MATS Pt 1).

11. The CAA VFR 1:500,000 and 1:250,000 charts and the UK AIP ENR 5 depict some, but not all aviation activity sites and amendments should also be checked. Please refer to http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com

12. This ACN details specific coordination essential to the activity taking place and does not remove the need for aircraft operators to comply with national flight planning and notification procedures. Pilots and ANSPs are required to ensure that all related aviation sites are aware of this planned activity and of subsequent changes not captured within this document.

13. The Sponsor or Event Organiser should co-ordinate any changes to this ACN with SARG quoting the ACN Reference at the top of the page.

SECTION 2: CO-ORDINATION ARRANGEMENTS (SPECIFIC)

14. The Watchman Radar and Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) at MOD Aberporth, Ceredigion, requires periodic calibration by an airborne platform; this calibration is undertaken by the Event Sponsor.

15. The Watchman Radar is located at 520815N 0043329W and the radar head is 461ft AMSL.

16. Calibration Profile:

a. Up to eight runs at each level in an area between radials147°T clockwise to 180°T, radial 240°T or radials 330°T clockwise to 020°T. Watchman runs from 65nm to 30nm, one run from 65nm to the overhead. MSSR runs from 85nm to the overhead and from the overhead to 85nm.

b. Calibration flights will be flown at 8,000ft, 14,000ft, 16,000ft, 20,000ft and 22,000ft

above radar head ‘D’ value1.

c. If required other levels may be flown, subject to ATC approval.

d. Operational constraints require a maximum of 5 of drift angle inbound to maintain a known radar cross section, hence aircraft captain may request, subject to Air Traffic Control conditions permitting, a radial not covered by this ACN.

17. Prior to departure, the Event Sponsor/aircraft captain must telephone the Swanwick(Mil) West Supervisor and Aberporth, giving full details of the flight profile. Additionally, for those runs within the arc between radials 330°T clockwise to 360°T, the sponsor/aircraft captain must telephone the Dublin ACC Station Manager, giving full details of the flight profile. If any part of the calibration is due to be flown at night, then the sponsor/aircraft captain must give at least 24 hours prior notice to Swanwick (Mil) West and Aberporth.

18. The runs at the higher levels within the arc between radials 330°T clockwise to 042°T are likely to penetrate ATS Route L18. If it is necessary for those radials to be flown when L18 is notified as active, penetration of the ATS Route will be tactically co-ordinated between Swanwick (Mil) / Aberporth (as appropriate) and the LAC (Swanwick) Operations Supervisor. In these circumstances, the sponsor/aircraft captain must telephone the LAC (Swanwick) Operations Supervisor (01489 612420), at least one hour prior to departure, giving full details of the flight profile.

19. The Event Sponsor/ aircraft captain is responsible for co-ordinating with Dublin ACC Station Manager for penetration of those parts of ATS Routes L18 and L975 where ATS is delegated to Dublin ACC.

20. Temporary Reserved Areas (TRA) - the 20,000 ft and 22,000 ft runs in the 147°T - 240°T arc will penetrate TRA 001. The aircraft captain/sponsor is responsible for complying with the access requirements specified in UK AIP ENR 1.1.5, paragraph 1.5.

21. It is the responsibility of the aircraft captain/sponsor to obtain clearance into/ suppression of Danger/ Prohibited/ Restricted Areas affected by the activity.

22. The activity may infringe Refuelling Areas AARA 10W and 10E. The aircraft captain should consult NOTAMs for AARA status or alternatively contact MABCC (01489 612495/24).

23. The activity also infringes the RAF Valley ATA / AIAA and North Wales MTA. Flights in these areas should be co-ordinated with RAF Valley.

24. Non-Deviating Status has been requested and is granted for those parts of the calibration within Controlled Airspace. Outside Controlled Airspace, ATC agencies are requested to afford priority handling, but the sponsor/aircraft captain must be prepared to accept deviations where necessary.

25. This ACN is PERMANENT and will only be amended/updated when required. It replaces ACN 2015-00-0067, dated 2 January 2015, which should be deleted.

1 ‘D’ Values are corrected from ICAN standard atmosphere to actual conditions, thus aircraft on inbound leg may be unable to maintain whole Flight Levels
