02 Industry and Safety Training

COILED TUBING (Well Service Blow out Prevention) (Enform) – 1 day This course is designed for the Coiled Tubing Operators and Well Site Supervisors who would be involved in well control operations while using coiled tubing for well servicing. Course topics include CT equipment, CT tools and accessories, CT BOP’S wellhead equipment, flow back systems and well control responses.

CONFINED SPACE (Southeast College) – 1 dayThis course covers the O H & S regulations pertaining to confined spaces, hazard identification, gas detection, and the entry permit. It also covers the inspection and use of SCBA and rescue techniques and simulation, and reinforces the need for proper pre-planning procedures.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE (Saskatchewan Safety Council) – 1 dayAbout 85% of all traffic collisions could be prevented if drivers knew collision avoidance techniques and used them. You can learn these techniques through DDC, an established, proven program that meets the need for today’s complex traffic environment.

In this Sask. Safety Council course you will have the opportunity to learn what is involved in driving defensively, why and how various types of motor vehicle collisions occur and what it takes to prevent them.

DETECTION AND CONTROL OF FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES (Enform) – 1 dayThis one-day course is designed for personnel working with or near flammable substances in the oil and gas industry. The primary focus is to safely monitor and control these substances. The course includes an introduction to flammable substances, principles of flammable gas/vapour detection, care and preparation of combustible gas monitors, interpreting combustible gas readings, and control methods.

FALL ARREST (Southeast College) – Half dayThis half day course covers the O H & S Act & Regulations required to meet fall arrest requirements. The course also covers care and maintenance of full body harnesses and anchor points. Practical training included.

FALL PROTECTION FOR RIG WORK (Enform) – 2 daysFall Protection was developed in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAOCD) and is intended for workers, supervisors, managers and safety personnel involved in drilling and service rig operations. This two-day Enform course includes fall protection principles, anchorages, body support devices, connecting components and devices, life lines and ladder-climbing systems. The hands-on portion of the training includes climbing to height using fall protection equipment, work positioning, anchorage connection and transfer between fall protection systems. Successful completion of the course requires that participants be able to climb to a height of approximately four meters.

FATIGUE MANAGEMENT & HOURS OF SERVICE (Saskatchewan Trucking Association) – 1 dayFatigue Management training covers all aspects of fatigue, from causes to management practices. Employees are empowered with tools to minimize the negative effects of fatigue, while training aims to build fatigue awareness and improve employees’ quality of sleep, work, and life. The Hours of Service course provides training on minimum/maximum on- and off-duty hours, driving cycles, and hands-on use of logbooks.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED (St. John Standard) – 2 daysThis is the standard First Aid & CPR ‘A’ course that covers artificial resuscitation, choking, bleeding, shock, wounds and dressings, injuries, burns, fractures plus much more. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training is included. Receive a certificate from St. John’s Ambulance. Course content set by Occupational Health and Safety.

Topics include emergency scene management, choking, shock and unconsciousness, severe bleeding, one and two rescuer CPR for an adult casualty, and automatic external defibrillation (AED) training.

The First Aid & CPR ‘C’ Infant & Child training can be taken at the same time as the standard ‘A’ course. Please notify Registrations of your intent to take the ‘C’ training.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED RECERTIFICATION (St. John Standard) - Level A – 1 dayThe goal of this re-certification is to allow students as much practical exercise as is possible, while meeting the growing demand for one-day re-certification format. This is the standard First Aid & CPR ‘A’ recertification course. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) recertification is included.

The First Aid & CPR ‘C’ Infant & Child recertification can be taken at the same

time as the standard ‘A’ recertification. Please notify Registrations of your intent to take the ‘C’ training. An additional tuition cost of $20 will be applied.

* Must have a current certificate. Recertification cannot be repeated. If you took the Recertification course the last time your certification expired, you must register for the 2-day standard course.

FIRST LINE SUPERVISORS BLOWOUT PREVENTION (Enform) – 4 daysThis course is designed primarily for the First Line Supervisor (driller) on a drilling rig and is also a prerequisite for the Second Line Supervisor’s Well Control course. Topics in the four day course include source and magnitude of pressure, causes and warning signs of kicks, shut-in procedures, crew positions and duties during well control operations, procedures for circulating out influxes and government regulations. At the conclusion of the course, the participant is able to use warning signs to recognize a kick and safely shut-in a well. GLOBAL GROUND DISTURBANCE (Level 2) (Global Training Centre) – 1 dayThis course is directed at anyone who undertakes any excavation activity using either powered mechanical or hand equipment. The intent of the program is to provide an awareness of the various safety issues involved in the undertaking of a ground disturbance, as well

as the proper procedures that should be followed. Level 2 will cover all aspects of Ground Disturbance, including supervisor’s rights and responsibilities. This course is certified by Global Training.

GROUND DISTURBANCE (Southeast College) (Level 2) – 1 dayThis course is directed at anyone who undertakes any excavation activity using either powered mechanical or hand equipment. The intent of the program is to provide an awareness of the various safety issues involved in the undertaking of a ground disturbance, as well as the proper procedures that should be followed. Level 2 will cover all aspects of Ground Disturbance, including supervisor’s rights and responsibilities.

H2S ALIVE (Enform) – 1 dayThis one-day course is intended for all workers in the petroleum industry who could be exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The primary focus is to provide generic H2S course content to help workers work safely in and around H2S environments. The course covers the physical properties and health hazards of H2S, how to protect oneself and basic rescue techniques. Each student is required to operate a self-contained breathing apparatus and a detector tube device, and to perform CPR and rescue lift and drag exercises.

04 Industry and Safety Training

POWERED MOBILE EQUIPMENT (PME) Training – 1 dayCovers theories of equipment operation, government regulations, and safe operating practices. Includes hands-on training and evaluation. Southeast College is equipped to train in the following PME areas: Aerial Boom lift/Boom Articulation, Backhoe, Crawler, Excavator, Forklift, Front End Loader, Grader, Rough Terain Fork/Zoom Boom, Scissor Lift, Skid Steer, Tractor.

RESOURCE INDUSTRY DRIVER ENHANCEMENT (RIDE) (Saskatchewan Trucking Association) – 1 dayThe purpose of the RIDE program is to provide the resource industry and its professional drivers with training that is acceptable to employers within the resource industry (particularly oilfield and forestry) and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, which recognizes RIDE as an equivalent to GODI. The four main sections covered by this course are: Improving your driving skills, off-highway driving techniques, regulatory requirements, and non-driving skills.

RIDE and Fatigue Management & Hours of Service are offered in combination to meet the regulatory requirements of the oil well service vehicle permit.

FALL RESCUE FOR RIG WORK (Enform) – 1 dayRig Rescue was developed in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC), and is intended for workers, supervisors, managers and safety personnel. Topics covered include rescue team roles, rescue equipment, ropes and knots, mechanical advantage, management of escape buggy, and rescue scenarios.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT & REGULATORY AWARENESS (Enform) – 3 daysThis course is recognized by Enform and is designed to ensure well site supervisors and prime contractors are aware of their responsibilities and roles with respect to Health and Safety at the well site. Key legislated rules and industry practices for Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan will be discussed and are summarized in an index with references, so that the well site supervisor/prime contractor can research further details as needed.

Responsibilities for health and safety legislation, health and safety program elements supervisor’s role, hazard identification, risk assessment and control, inspections incident investigation, emergency response and leadership skills will be covered.

SERVICE RIG ASSESSOR (Enform) – 1 dayThe goal of this program is to provide field superintendents and rig managers with guidelines for completing a competency assessment of a floorhand, derrickman or driller. Topics covered include competence, responsibilities of the assessor, and performing successful assessments.

WELL SERVICE BLOWOUT PREVENTION (Enform) – 4 daysThis course is aimed at the service rig operators, service rig managers, well site supervisors, field foremen, production foremen and production engineers involved in well killing operations on the service rig. Topics covered include sources and magnitude of pressures, causes of kicks, BOP equipment, kick warning signs, crew positions and duties, well shut-in procedures, well killing procedures, calculations and government regulations. Upon successful completion of the examination, the candidate will be issued the required Well Service Blowout Prevention certificate, which is valid for five years.

SKID CAR TRAINING (Southeast College) – 1 dayThis one day course combines theory and practical, hands-on training. Students will learn what causes vehicles to skid, some skid avoidance and theory in the morning. In the afternoon, students will be given time in the skid car to put into practice what they have learned as well as a practical driver evaluation in their own vehicle. Students must hold a current Class 5 license.

DID YOU KNOW?If you have not completed your high school and want to complete grade 10 or 12 or if your high school marks are not high enough to get you into postsecondary training, then Adult Basic Education (ABE) is the place for you!

Study at a pace suitable to your individual needs and abilities. When you start a program, our qualified and experienced instructors will determine where you are at, what your goals are and create an individualized program to help get you there!

PRE-10In this program, you will gain life management, language, math and introductory computer skills. The program also includes a work experience component.

ADULT 10 & 12Completers in the Adult 10-12 program will receive Grade 10 and/or 12 Diplomas recognized by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education.

GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA (GED)The General Education Diploma (GED) test is a chance to get the job or career you want. GED tests measure academic skills and knowledge expected of high school graduates. The test consists of the basic subject areas of reading, writing, math, science and social studies. The GED Testing Service is an all-computer format. The Estevan Campus is the only computer-based GED testing centre for Southeast College.

POWER ENGINEERING FOURTH CLASSPower Engineering technicians help keep power plants running safely and efficiently. A shortage of certified technicians means job opportunities have never been better. You could work in the oil & gas industry, mining, manufacturing, energy, health and other industties. It is a physical job that requires manual dexterity and good vision, as well as problem-solving skills and a knack for working with machinery.

In this one-year Power Engineering Technicial certificate program, you will study Fourth Class interprovincial standardized material, which will prepare you to challenge interprovincial Fourth Class examinations.

POWER ENGINEERING THIRD CLASS THEORYThe world runs on power. Power engineering technologists are in charge of operating and maintaining the complex systems used to operate industrial boilers, pumps, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Demand for skilled power engineers is growing, opening the door to good jobs in the oil patch, mining, manufacturing, power generation utilities and more.

You’ll gain knowledge and skills in the operation of power (steam) plants and industrial processes, including: air conditioning and refrigeration, boiler operations (high and low pressure), communications, computer monitoring of plant operations, controls and instrumentation, environmental management, equipment checks and maintenance, plant safety, pump operations and water treatment systems.

After completion, you are prepared to challenge the standard Third Class exams.

CONTINUING CARE ASSISTANTThe Continuing Care Assistant Program provides the knowledge and skills you need to move into this rewarding field. It is a 30-week certificate program that combines hands-on classroom learning with practical clinical experience. Practicums provide direct experience in home care, long-term care, special care and acute care settings.

You will build knowledge and skills related to:• Application of longer-term care

philosophy in different settings• Addressing individual psychosocial

needs• Dementia management strategies• Gerontology (a major area of study)• Administering personal care• Promoting independence in a safe

ELECTRICIANThis program provides entry-level skill training. You will learn how to make electrical installations and perform maintenance duties according to industry standards. The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Branch grant the first of four levels of training to graduates who enter the Electrician Apprenticeship Program

HAIRSTYLISTHairstylist is a certificate program. Hairstylists who want to work in the trade are legally required to first complete a 1500 hour pre-employment program. You will learn how to perform techniques on hair, wigs, hairpieces, skin and nails. You will also develop artistry, salon management and customer service skills. This program provides an apprenticeship period of up to two years

HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND TRUCK AND TRANSPORT TECHNICIAN The 21 week Heavy Equipment & Truck & Transport Applied Certificate program gives you Level I training in two high-demand mechanical trades. Heavy Duty equipment technicians work on large mobile equipment – bulldozers, cranes, graders, loaders & earthmovers used in construction, mining, forestry & more. Truck & Transport mechanics work on trucks, buses, & highway transport vehicles for dealers, garages & transportation companies.

Successful graduates could receive Level I credit towards their journeyperson certification from Sask Apprenticeship (SATCC).

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING

Classes are delivered to serve learners with different levels of English proficiency. Classes also help familiarize newcomers with Canadian culture and their local community. LINC and Stage-1 & 2 English curriculums are used in class.

EAL instructors are dedicated and enthusiastic about teaching. They have a combination of teaching degrees, classroom experience, CERTESL training and experience teaching overseas.

Registrations are taken on an ongoing basis. Students need to bring an immigration document and SIN with them to class to register. Each student will receive a language assessment (CLBPT) upon enrollment in an EAL program to determine placement as well as student needs.

LINC certificates will be issued to students who are eligible.

IELTS TESTING SERVICESSoutheast College Estevan Campus in partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic is pleased to announce they will be offering the IELTS Test - International English Language Testing System twice a year in Estevan. Both the Academic and General Training formats will be offered. The IELTS test in an approved test for IRCC language requirements and several University language requirements.

ADULT LITERACY SUPPORT CENTRESThe Support Centres are for adults wishing to improve their EAL skills, math skills, and a variety of other literacy skills. A tutor will be available to create an individual learning plan for the student and answer questions. Lessons are planned to be responsive to student needs, questions, and English levels. Our English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes offer newcomers training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing English. Classes are interactive and responsive to student needs, questions, and English skill level.

INDUSTRIAL MECHANICThis 18-week program gives you a working knowledge of machinery common to most industries and an introduction to preventative maintenance procedures. This program covers all level 1 subjects and is recognized by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certificaton Commission (SATCC). Work experience of 2 weeks is part of the program. Course also includes 1 week of course specific safety training.

Graduates may find employment in commercial or industrial operations that use machinery. These include wood, cereal, meat processing and powert generating plants, hard rock and potash mines, mills and refineries.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATIONThis program provides a well-rounded base of knowledge and skill development related to the business environment. You will receive practical and applied training in:

PRACTICAL NURSINGLicensed practical nurses are a vital part of today’s health care team - in actute hospital care, long term care, and in the community. You provide compassionate, professional nursing care to individuals throughout the human lifespan, infants to seniors.

In just two years, we’ll help you develop into a competent, confident nurse capable or making a positive difference in the health and well being of individuals, their families and our communities.

Practical Nursing is a two year diploma program offered at Southeast College. Community based clinical experiences let you apply nursing knowledge, theory and skills in a variety of environments. Students will have access to a wide variety of courses. The method of delivery will include a combination of face to face classes, video conferencing and online courses. All courses are transferable to the University of Saskatchewan and other University of Regina degree programs.

ADVANCING YOUR GRAIN MARKETING STRATEGIESYou will examine the potential use of the futures market options to attain pricing goals and evaluate the types of option hedging strategies that can be implemented within a grain enterprise. You will analyze the use/limitation of commodity options and how options can be used to manage risk in your marketing plan.

AGEXPERT ANALYST (Introduction) This hands-on course is designed to enable participants to set up and use a complete set of farm books with the AgExpert Analyst software. Participants will develop a set of farm books, enter financial and inventory transactions, and print reports for management purposes (cash/accrual). Course includes free copy of training curricula.

Pre-requisites: Basic computer and bookkeeping skills are essential.

AGEXPERT ANALYST (Advanced) This hands-on course is designed to enable participants to take advantage of advanced features in AgExpert Analyst software.

Participants will: • Generate and analyze various

reports and tools to support the farm management process

• Learn to ensure the integrity of data reported from the database to government programs

• Identify program features to use in their own operation

• Establish a plan for further skills enhancement

Pre-requisites: A good understanding of AgExpert software from previous participation in the Introduction to AgExpert Analyst course.

AGEXPERT FIELD MANAGER PRO Students will learn to use both components of the FieldManager Pro. They will use the Financial Planner to project cropping plans with fixed and variable costs to establish break-even yields and returns. Students will use the field record keeping component to create a sample farm, setup inputs and equipment and follow a variety of crops through a year of operations. Crops will be harvested, stored and sold so that a profit loss analysis can be done on several fields. Time will be allotted to view a variety of reports.

GRAIN MARKETING BASICS, INTRODUCTION (Saskatchewan Polytechnic) You will gain a sound understanding of basic grain marketing principles and strategies, enabling you to identify marketing opportunities within your grain enterprise that will increase the returns to your production system. You will gain a better understanding of how gran prices are determined from a regional, national and worldwide perspective and be equipped to improve profit potential when marketing grain commodities.

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR - AGRICULTURE/INDUSTRIAl (Saskatchewan Polytechnic) Agriculture: Study pesticide use for controlling agriculture pests such as weeds, insects and diseases as it is related to agriculture production. Course content includes on-farm seed treatment, bird and rodent control, and weed control in farm dugouts and shelterbelts.

Industrial: Study herbicide use for controlling weeds in industrial areas such as roadsides, power lines, right of way, well sites, parking lots, roadbeds, and equipment yards. Controlling designated noxious weeds on all lands will be covered.

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR – LANDSCAPE (Saskatchewan Polytechnic) The student will study the use of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and vertebrate control products to maintain ornamental plants and turf on outdoor residential, commercial and public lands. Course content also includes pesticide use in nurseries for propagation of landscape and garden plants. Golf course attendants need to take this if they want to spray.

SMALL ENGINE REPAIRFrom tune-ups to over-hauls, you can learn to service your own small engines - from trimmers to garden tractors, motorcycles, ATV’s and snowmobiles (No 650 cc motorcycle engines).

Participants need to bring their own tools: Wrenches, screw drivers, pliers, sockets etc. and a tote to store them in, along with their own motor to work on.

5-DAY TRUCK DRIVER TRAINING PROGRAM:This program is designed for individuals who have some Truck Driving skills and abilities, however require at least 5 days of training in order to be successful to obtain a Class 1A License. Provide confirmation of sponsorship (if applicable), learners must pay full amount at time of registration and $500 deposit - with full payment due 10 days before the start of the program (40 hours).

10-DAY TRUCK DRIVER TRAINING PROGRAM:This program is designed for individuals who have little or no semi-tractor/trailer driving skills and abilities. Depending on the individual and their commitment, the individual should be able to obtain a Class 1A License within the 10-day period. Includes 2 days in classroom and 8 days in-truck training.

InstructionInstructors are qualified and approved by SGI. The courses are unique to the field of truck driver training in their ability to be moved to various locations in southeast Saskatchewan. For the driving portion, students will be instructed in pre/post trip inspections, brake adjustments, hook/unhook procedures, double clutching, backing, shifting, turns, city/highway driving, yard maneuvers, safety procedures and traffic awareness. Two participants are required for the training to start, so be sure to express your interest early.

TestingTesting is conducted after the truck training is completed. Each student

is tested individually according to standards, regulations and procedures implemented by SGI with no deviation. Road tests will only be conducted in locations that are recognized by SGI as testing centres. The College supplies the tractor-trailer unit and fuel in order for the student to complete the road test.

commercial driving age in the U.S.A. is 21 years old; all operators must comply)

SPANISH (LEVEL 2) Students continue their study of Spanish by further expanding their previous knowledge of key vocabulary topics and grammar concepts. Students not only begin to comprehend listening and reading passages more fully, but they also start to express themselves more meaningfully in both speaking and writing. Spanish Level 2 continues to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills activities with fun activities involving conversation, music, videos and interviews. The classes will be taught by a Spanish native speaker teacher.

SPANISH (LEVEL 3) Student further deepen their understanding of Spanish by focusing on the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Each unit consists of a variety of activities which teach the students how to understand more difficult written and spoken passages, to communicate with others through informal speaking and writing interactions, and to express their thoughts and opinions in both formal and informal spoken and written contexts. The course is conducted almost entirely in Spanish by a Spanish native speaker teacher.

ST. JOHN’S AMBULANCE BABYSITTING COURSE Course is aimed at 11-16 year olds interested in taking responsibility for younger children. CONTINUING CARE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATELonger life expectancies, a growing population of senior citizens, more focus on outpatient treatment – these are some of the reasons for the increasing demand for continuing care assistants. Simply put, continuing care assistants are people who care for other people.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s (formerly SIAST) Continuing Care Assistant program provides the knowledge and skills you need to move into this rewarding field. It is a one-year certificate program that combines hands-on classroom learning with practical clinical experience. Practicums provide direct experience in home care, long-term care, special care and acute care settings.

You will build knowledge and skills related to: • Application of long-term care

philosophy in different settings • Addressing individual psychosocial

needs • Dementia management strategies • Gerontology (a major area of study) • Administering personal care • Promoting independence in a safe

The demand for continuing care assistants is growing and so are the job opportunities. You could work in a home care setting, long-term care facility, private care home, acute care facility, integrated facility, supportive housing or special needs classroom.

Most continuing care assistants work for one of Saskatchewan’s 12 regional health authorities or the Athabasca Health Authority. You’re part of a health care team working under the supervision of registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses and/or licensed practical nurses.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID

Southeast College is pleased to offer new and existing students with many scholarship and financial aid options. Through the generous support of our donors, thousands of dollars are awarded annually to assist those who choose to pursue their studies at Southeast College. The Government of Saskatchewan also contributes a significant amount of funding through the Saskatchewan Innovation & Opportunities Scholarship Program (www.gov.sk.ca) which matches the funds raised by post-secondary institutions through private sector and community-based partners.

The pieces of Heavy Equipment used is depended upon the project. Equipment can vary from project to project.

In addition to the practical experience gained behind the controls, the student must also successfully complete classroom theory courses and exams. Students will also receive two safety certificates: St. John’s First Aid/CPR level “A” & AED and Ground Disturbance Level II.

Graduates may find employment operating heavy equipment in the construction industry, pipeline and oil patches, forestry industry, or rural and urban municipalities.

If you are presently collecting EI benefits, there may be funding available to you to cover some or all of the tuition. Contact your local Southeast College campus to find out more.
