Crowds outside the David H. Koch Theater, where three of the most revered ballet companies in the world—the Bolshoi Ballet, New York City Ballet, and Paris Opera Ballet—celebrated the 50th anniversary of George Balanchine’s Jewels with an unprecedented joint performance.

Conductor Louis Langrée leads the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in one of its spirited summer programs.

Dear Friends:

It has been an important year for the arts and for Lincoln Center.

We are living through a moment when discord seems far more common than harmony, and when one of the few things that people across the political spectrum can agree on is that our opportunities to agree have become more fraught and less frequent. Art, however, is the one lasting endeavor that allows us to transcend our differences to discover universal channels of communication, understanding, and joy. It is no surprise that through the arts, we can find our way closer to harmony.

The way that art triumphs is the same way that people triumph: in the spirit of togetherness. Lincoln Center has wholly embraced that spirit over the past 12 months—from bringing together three of the world’s leading ballet companies to share the stage for the historic 50th anniversary of George Balanchine’s Jewels to our legal team working fastidiously to secure visas for the actors of While I Was Waiting, a play conceived and set in Syria. Both took place during this summer’s Lincoln Center Festival, which poignantly presents “art that knows no borders.”

This is the positive momentum that we are seizing upon now to build a strategy for the future of Lincoln Center, which has been going especially strong since welcoming a new president in March. This undertaking has been particularly fortuitous thanks to all of the magnificent support that immediately poured in—from our own campus and Board to supportive New Yorkers and arts lovers worldwide—and continues to humble us as we chart our way forward.

Our goals looking ahead are inspired by our successes in the past year. They include expanding our accessibility for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds through means as diverse as building upon our youth engagement programs to growing our digital outreach with both new technology and our increasing social media presence. It also means continuing to rally all 11 organizations on our campus to stand together as a unified Lincoln Center: a true leader in the performing arts in every sense of the word.

This may sound ambitious, but looking at what we have already done in these past 12 months, there is no reason to think we can’t accomplish everything we set out to do—in the spirit of togetherness, in pursuit of harmony, and through the power of the arts.

Sincerely,

Katherine Farley Debora L. Spar Chair President

In a pair of statements released in February and March of 2017, Lincoln Center and its 11 resident organizations made a compelling case for the continued support of the arts. The statements included data underscoring the positive impact of the arts on culture, social engagement, and education, and demonstrated how the arts fuel local and national economies. Picked up by media outlets across the country, Lincoln Center used its voice as a leader in the arts to support the artists, companies, and audiences in small cities and towns across America who are most vulnerable to funding challenges.

Arts and culture contribute $704.2 billion to the U.S. economy each year.

A Lincoln Center tradition for more than 40 years, Summer Forum brings teachers from all over the world to campus for a three-week series of intensive workshops on a variety of timely—and timeless—subjects. In 2017, Summer Forum hosted educators from 24 states and 12 countries.

A newer initiative—developed with the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) in 2014—the Middle School Arts Audition Boot Camp is a two-week training program that helps eighth-grade students prepare for auditions to selective performing arts high schools. In 2017, Lincoln Center enrolled 60 percent more students in Boot Camp than in the previous year, kicked off alumni pro-gramming, and piloted Mentor-Linc, which paired 40 alumni with dedicated mentors to support their artistic, social, and academic

Lincoln Center EducationLincoln Center Education (LCE) enriches the lives of students, educators, and lifelong learners through engagement with the arts on the stage, in the classroom, and within communities. Since its founding in 1975, LCE’s work has reached more than 20 million students, educators, administrators, parents, community members, and teaching artists.

Boro-Linc partners with local artists, community-based organiza-tions, leaders, and Lincoln Center resident organizations to present family-friendly performances and activities off campus. In 2016–17 Boro-Linc produced over 30 events in all five boroughs, including a touring version of La Casita Out of Doors, and three visual art exhibits.

Family-Linc builds partnerships with schools and community-based organizations to increase access for families on campus, providing participants with prime seats at performances for just $5, as well as opportunities to participate in workshops, backstage tours, and artist talks that deepen their experience and build social connections. In 2016–17, 320 families attended one or more performances, with 39 “super-users” participating in four or more events.

growth. While the 2017 numbers aren’t in yet, 2016’s remarkable results speak volumes: An astounding 96 percent of Boot Camp participants were admitted into a high school of their choice.

In addition to Summer Forum and Boot Camp, other highlights of LCE’s initiatives include the Lincoln Center Arts Teacher Award, which, in partnership with the NYC DOE’s Big Apple Awards, contributes $5,000 annually to a chosen recipient for classroom use and is the only DOE-sponsored award recognizing excellence in the arts. LC Scholars, in partnership with Hunter College and the DOE, trains and places top-quality arts teachers in up to 120 NYC public schools. Through another DOE-partnership, the Arts in the Middle program helps integrate the arts into school communities that would otherwise have little or no arts instruction.

Communities

The Community Artist Residencies program provides support for socially engaged artists to create new works with members of our partner organizations such as the Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center and WIN, a transitional housing network. In 2016–17, eight artists created projects based on participants’ interests and concerns, including musician Emma Alabaster (Staten Island), theater-artist Kirya Traber (Bronx), and visual artist and community activist Emmett Wigglesworth (Queens).

Mentor-Linc volunteers playing a theater game with mentees at a kick-off event in September 2016. Family-Linc’s pre-concert event with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in November included a musical instrument “petting zoo.”

Visitors can also enjoy free Wi-Fi as well as food and drink from ’wichcraft café.

Retail KioskIn July and August 2017, Lincoln Center piloted a new retail program with a pop-up shop on our plaza that expanded the reach of the Lincoln Center brand and channeled the bright, celebratory energy of summer at Lincoln Center. With prices ranging from $5 to $50, offerings included magnets, tote bags, water bottles, and umbrellas, all featuring a whimsical take on the artistry and architecture of Lincoln Center’s iconic campus.

Web and Mobile AppsLincolnCenter.org is the online gateway to every performance happening on Lincoln Center’s campus as well as a rich array of multimedia content celebrating the artists we present. Last year, the site welcomed nearly 2.7 million visitors, representing growth of 35 percent over the previous year. Lincoln Center is also served by two mobile apps: our core ticketing app (the Lincoln Center app) and the Tour Lincoln Center app, which offers a 16-stop self-guided exploration of the campus. Last year, app downloads increased by 99 and 199 percent, respectively.

The Score In late 2016, Lincoln Center launched its first online magazine, The Score, which serves as an insider’s guide to the performing arts. Featuring profiles of artists, additional context about upcoming programs, advice from the pros, and fun quizzes that will keep you on your toes, The Score offers new insights into the world of Lincoln Center.

Social MediaLincoln Center continues to engage with fans locally and around the globe through its growing social media channels. Our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube channels are staying ahead of the curve with 360° video, live coverage, and thoughtful content leading to excellent fan engagement. The growth numbers are impressive: YouTube views grew 80.6 percent and Instagram followers increased by 63 percent.

VideoThe video section of LincolnCenter.org continues to be a home for creative and innovative new ways to experience the programs and activities of all 11 resident organizations, with nearly 6,000 videos currently available. In total, across various channels, Lincoln Center’s videos were viewed over 13 million times last year.

Annual Supporters

Thank You

The arts are about allowing us to see our world in a new light. But any way you look at it—from the breathtaking presentations on our stages to free performances in all five boroughs, from worldwide digital outreach to culturally immersive community events—all of the accomplishments that defined our success at Lincoln Center this year were only possible thanks to your generous donations.

Philanthropic support—along with public funding, bequests, and in-kind contribu-tions—is essential to fulfilling our mission of sharing the world’s best arts with the widest possible audiences.

We are deeply grateful to the many contributors who provide vital support to the cultural, educational, and outreach programs at Lincoln Center. Listed here are those patrons whose annual gifts of $1,000 or more, including in-kind goods and services, are reflected in every exceptional moment within the pages of this Annual Report.

Thank you for your meaningful commitment to the performing arts and to Lincoln Center.

Not yet part of the Lincoln Center family of contributors? There are many ways to play a bigger role at the world’s leading performing arts center: You can become a Friend of Lincoln Center today—or begin thinking about tomorrow with a planned gift, through our illustrious Bravo Society. You may be interested in offering pro bono services or helping us send teaching artists to local schools. Please consider this a personal invitation to be one of Lincoln Center’s indispensable advocates or join our inspirational family of supporters.

For more information on making a gift to Lincoln Center, please contact Tamar C. Podell, Executive Vice President of Planning & Development, at 212.875.5421 or [email protected].
