With state- of-the-art facilities, this complex is well suited to senior undergraduates, postgraduates, postdoctoral fellows and visiting academic/research staff. (NB-Students under the age of 18 years as at 1 January 2016 are not eligible) to reside at The Junction in 2016. Living in a university residence offers many opportunities for personal growth, cultural interaction, and intellectual engagement, as well as a variety of social events and sporting activities - the perfect environment for South African and international students to immerse themselves in the WIts experience and to make new friends. The Wits Junction is set in spacious secure surroundings and offers a choice of bachelor, two-bedroomed, three- bedroomed and four-bedroomed apartments, all fully furnished, with full internet connectivity. The minimum lease is for ten months (February - November) but twelve-month leases are also available. NOTE: We are unable to accommodate married couples or families on campus, but we can provide information regarding private apartments near the University. Transport - A free campus bus service links The Junction with all campuses between 06:30 and 23:30, Mondays to Fridays. This service commences at 08:30 on Saturdays and Sundays, and also provides transport to the Rosebank shopping malls. Medical - The Campus Health & Wellness Centre provides residence students with a wide range of services at a nominal fee per consultation, including basic medication, provided they agree to be screened by one of the Centre’s primary health care nurses before being taken through to see the campus doctor. All resident staff are trained in first aid. In the event of an emergency, students will be taken to the Milpark Hospital (for students with medical aid cover) or the Johannesburg Hospital. Residence Admission for all new residents will take place during normal working hours (08:00 - 16:00) Mondays to Fridays, unless special arrangements have been made for arrival at any other time. (Tel: 011 717-5028/29/32) NB: Latecomers may lose their residence places, because we have huge waiting lists. When checking in at The Junction you must have proof of identity - eg your ID book/card or passport, as well as proof of payment of your residence deposit. All self-funding students must bring documentary proof of their family income. Postgraduates should consult their academic schools or supervisors regarding the date of commencement of their academic activities. The Junction complex has all the essentials for comfortable residential life on campus, including:

The Central Accommodation Office on the ground floor of Senate House (on theEastCampus)dealswithenquiriesfrom all new applicants.

Residence staff include a Residence Manager, two Accommodation Officers and six Wardens who live on the premises and provide after-hours supervision and support with the assistance of an elected House Committees.

Dining halls are located near each of the undergraduate residences, and the Meals 2000 booking system allows

even self-catered students to take meals in any of the six dining halls to suit their personal timetables (both academic and social). (Meal costs are not included in the accommodation fees.) Kitchens include fridges, stoves and microwaves.

Bedroomsareequippedwithbedsandmattresses, desks and chairs, bookcases and lockable wardrobes. Every room has curtains or blinds and central heating or a wall-mounted electric heater. (NB – Private heaters are not permitted.)

Security is a cooperative effort! All students are expected to observe the University’s rules regarding access to residences. Access to the complex is controlled by turnstiles, booms and a 24-hour security service. NB – All valuables should be kept under lock and key at all times.

Visitors are permitted in this residence during the following hours only:Sundays to Thursdays 09:00 – 23:00Fridays & Saturdays 09:00 – 24:00Overnight guests are not permitted.

All visitors are required to provide proof of identification and must be

signed in at the residence reception desk by their hosts/hostesses. Unaccompanied visitors will not be admitted. Residents are held accountable for any misconduct on the part of their visitors.

Communallivingrequiresahighdegreeof tolerance and cooperation, as well as consideration for the rights of others – especially the right of others to study without disturbance. For this reason we have strict rules regarding excessive noise, but these are relaxed during the daily “noise hours” from 17:00 to 19:00 (except during exam periods).

Some new students have difficulty in adjusting to residence life, but staff are available at all hours to counsel any student needing advice or support.

WHAT TO BRING...Every student must bring the following:

• Bedding(sheets,blanketorduvet, pillow and pillow slips)• Towels• Toiletries(soap,toothbrush,etc.)• Automaticwashingpowder• Crockery,cutleryandcooking utensils

• Akettleandacoffeemug• Anelectricironandanironingboard (Ironing is not permitted on beds or tables)

You may also bring -• Apersonalcomputerorlaptop-but

only if it is fully insured and has an electrical surge protection plug.

Residence rules do not permit the following -

• Alcohol• Illegaldrugsorweaponsofanynature• Hubblybubbly/hookahpipes• Personalheaters• Gas,paraffinorkeroseneappliances,

electric hotplates or primus stoves• Candles(Wehavegenerators)• Pets• Overnightvisitors(notevenrelatives)

The following are not permitted - • Smokingindoorsinanypartof any residence• Visitorsatanytimeotherthan

during official visitors hours.
