Faith Pictures is a short course from the Church Army designed to help us talk about the things that matter. So often people don’t know how to talk about their faith: hopefully this will help us!

The heart of the course is about helping people to identify a single picture or image that embodies something of their faith, and so tells something of their story. The course aims to be accessible and light-hearted, each session containing a short video and then encourages discussion in pairs and as a group.

We hope that all church members will join a ‘faith pictures’ group which will

meet 6 times in the autumn - others are most welcome to join us too! There are lists to sign at the back of the churches, with the opportunity of saying what time and day works best for you. Or email your details to [email protected]

The total raised was £2,578.45 for Chattisham church, which is a wonderful effort and the best result so far. D.C.

Fundraising in support of

Ruth and Doug Finbow

Saturday 17th September, 6.00pmEveryone is welcome at the Community Hall on Saturday 17th September at 6pm to raise money for Cancer Research and the Woolverstone Wish Fundraising Group.

Come and enjoy a BBQ, live music, karaoke, a raffle and a bouncy castle to raise money for these two great charities.

Jason and Aaron will be returning to the Hall at 7pm, having completed a 100 mile bike ride on pre 1900's bicycles in full police uniform, taking in all the police stations that Ruth worked at during her career. Please come and cheer them home!

All donations greatly appreciated to Steph Coupland at Laburnum Cottage in George Street. Ruth and Doug thoroughly support this event and all contributions made.

Hintlesham & Chattisham - The Story of Two Villages

Many thanks to all who came to our history book launch on the 9th and 10th July at the Village Hall. We had a constant stream of people over both days and it was inspiring to see so many interested in our two communities.

A special thanks must go to Jenny Cox who organised the refreshments and all her helpers.

The result is that we sold all of our books that week. However, the good news for those still waiting for a copy is that we are now printing some more and are able to keep the price at £20. For those not already on the list, if you would like a copy then please contact Diane Chase, at Tamarix, Chattisham. (652359).

AUTHORS

Diane ChaseDiane was born in Islington, North London in 1947 and qualified as a Teacher. She married Roger in 1969 and after spells in Essex and Hertfordshire, they arrived in Chattisham in 1980 along with Donna and Dylan. As the family got older Diane resumed her career and taught in several village Primary Schools within the area.

After settling happily in the community, she increasingly got involved in local organisations. Having a great interest in history, Diane was keen to research the story and influences that shaped our villages. She first met up with Audrey when they collaborated to put on a Local History exhibition in the old Memorial Hall. Then together with neighbour Jane Henderson, she published a book of photographs called Chattisham and Hintlesham – Then and Now in 1995.

Audrey and Diane produced several other photo exhibitions in the Community Centre and eventually in 2008, the idea for this book was planted. After much research and many hours ...... the rest is history.R

AUTHORS

Audrey LorfordAudrey was born in Chelsea, London in 1932. She married Michael, a book collector and after moving to Duke Street, Hintlesham in 1965, their son Toby was born.Being a trained teacher, Audrey taught in

primary schools around the Ipswich area for many years and at the same time, became involved in village life, including the Women’s Institute and clerk to the Parish Council. It was whilst she was clerk in the 1960s that the

voluntary job of Village Recorder was needed which involved collecting and recording all village activities. As nobody else seemed interested, she thought she would give it a try, although up to that point she had no particular interest in local history.

So Audrey became the first Recorder for Hintlesham and Chattisham and her love of our village and its history grew. She gradually started the wonderful collection of documents and photographs, many of which are in this book and her role has evolved into the Village Archivist.

Her infectious enthusiasm has never faltered and over the years she has taken Latin lessons to enable her to translate medieval papers as well as numerous trips to record offices and libraries. Her photo exhibitions and talks in the village have helped to encourage interest and knowledge of Hintlesham and Chattisham, which hopefully our book will also achieve.R

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD IN THE COMMUNITY HALL ON THURSDAY 14th JULY 2016 at 7.30 pm

Present at the meeting were 11 Parish Councillors, County Councillor David Busby, District Councillor Barry Gasper and 4 members of the public. Apologies were received from Nick Ridley and John Whyman.

The Story of Two Suffolk Villages; After several years of dedicated hard work, Diane Chase and Audrey Lorford finally unveiled their magnum opus at a special Book Launch event at the Community Hall. The exhibition was extremely successful, resulting in the entire initial print run of 250 copies being sold out. The Parish Council presented Diane and Audrey with bouquets of flowers as a sign of their appreciation of this fantastic achievement. There are plans afoot to print a second edition!Footpath Maps of Hintlesham & Chattisham; David Marsh reported that it is now possible to view accurate maps of public footpaths in our villages on the Village Website. It is not possible at the moment to print off copies of maps, but David assures us that he is working on it.http://hintleshamandchattisham.onesuffolk.net/assets/Uploads/Public-footpaths-Hintlesham.pdfhttp://hintleshamandchattisham.onesuffolk.net/assets/Uploads/Public-footpaths-Chattisham.pdfDistrict Council Report; Cllr Gasper reported that at his instigation, Babergh DC’s Annual Financial Plan would now be assessed by the Scrutiny Committee. He also mentioned that after several years of discussion and several thousands of pounds of consultancy fees, it had been decided that

neither the Needham Market or Hadleigh offices were able to fulfil the role of joint District Council Headquarters, and that the new Head Office would now be sited in Ipswich. Obviously!County Council Report; Cllr Busby said that although there had been several (27) public events held to publicise Babergh’s “Building A Sustainable Future” initiative, he had received feedback that they had not been well attended. Several Parish Councillors pointed out that although publicity leaflets had been printed, most had not been delivered. Perhaps this could explain why.

MONEY BINGO NIGHTFriday 12th August, 7.30pm

Community Hall Meeting RoomAll welcome

RECYCLING BINSOver the next few weeks, the recycling bins for glass, paper and clothing, which are currently placed outside the Community Hall, will be repositioned to the opposite side of the road, by the Sports Hut on the playing field. Please continue to use the bins as much as possible, as the income generated supports the maintenance of the children’s play area, and also helps purchase such things as the new seating now outside the Community Hall.

Community Council – Eileen DamantAt the meeting of the Community Council on 28th June, the Executive Committee made a presentation to Eileen Damant, the retiring Chairman, in recognition of the outstanding service she had given as a Trustee, Chairman of the Council and also of the Hall Management Committee, over a period of 33 years. In this time, Eileen has overseen and managed the original purchase of the land, sale of the old village hall, the construction of the new Community Hall and the maintenance of the viability of the Community Hall and Playing Areas, plus the co-ordination of the village organisations. Fortunately, the Council is not losing her experience as Eileen is remaining as Vice Chairman, giving valuable assistance to Tym Moore, the new Chairman. Tym presented Eileen with a gift token, a rose plant and an ornamental pot for her garden.

CHURCH FETEDespite the rain, which arrived dead on cue, we had a very successful time at Red House Farmyard. Our thanks go to Richard and Elisa Bostock, Andrew and Sarah Bryce and Jenny for organizing a very enjoyable Fete. It was great to have the space for children’s races and the Tug of War was wonderful!Thank you so much to everyone who contributed by manning a stall or a game, by donating things to sell or raffle, by setting up and clearing up!! All of which helped to a grand total of £2064.50! An additional £500 was raised for the St. Nicholas roof fund.

ALICE THE MUSICALI was lucky enough to be invited along to see Hintlesham & Chattisham School's performance of Alice the Musical last month – and what a performance it was!

Based on the original story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, we were treated to all the fun of the mad hatter's tea party, the crazy croquet match with flamingos for mallets and hedgehogs rolling across the stage as balls, and a wonderful cast of playing cards, woodland and sea creatures and flowers, and all of the other amazing characters from this wacky story.

The singing and dancing were excellent, with some lovely solo performances. We even had some audience participation, with the Queen of Hearts threatening us with “Off with their heads!” if we didn't sing up!

Costumes, props, sound and lighting were all terrific too. Many thanks to all the children and their teachers and parents for a really great show. Helen

And good luck to all the leavers heading off to their new schools.
