WELCOME TO SUMMER AT SEVERN 2016

Summer at Severn 2016 will be one to remember! Dive into some of our exciting new opportunities and enjoy the quality programs that have made our camps worth returning to year after year. This summer’s choices extend across four major categories: day camp, community enrichment program, specialty camps and sports camps, with extended hours available for most of our programs. Summer camps are available June 20 - July 29.

Severn Day Camp has headlined Severn’s summer programs for over 40 years, and we look forward to another summer of fun and friendship. With a number of age-specific groups, Day Camp has much to offer for our preschool to Middle School campers. Severn School has two campuses; Teel Campuslocated on Water Street in Severna Park, and just two miles down the road, Chesapeake Campus on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. The Day Camp program will be held at our Chesapeake Campus.

The Community Enrichment program allows campers entering grades 5 through 9 to spend their mornings exploring the many service related projects in our community through a variety of on and off campus field trips. The 2016 schedule including our service learning partners is available online. The Community Enrichment Program operates out of the Teel Campus.

We have expanded our array of Specialty Camps for hands-on learning at both campuses. Specialty camps at our Chesapeake Campus are for grades 1-5, and include filmmaking, pottery, drama and art. Specialty camps on the Teel campus cover grades 4-12 and offer chess, pottery, drama, 3D design and printing, and laser engraving. Read the descriptions and find a specialty camp that will allow campers to explore their passions, or develop a new one.

We invite novice and experienced athletes alike to learn and sharpen their skills in a challenging but instruction-rich environment at one of Severn’s Sports Camps with offerings that include lacrosse, baseball, and basketball.

SEVERN DAY CAMP PROGRAM

Severn Day Camp provides a safe and stimulating environment for students as young as age 3 1/2 through those entering fifth grade. Our week-long sessions are made up of fun and educational activities centered on a different weekly theme. Each group will be led by Severn’s own faculty and staff along with a team of enthusiastic counselors who provide constant and careful supervision from the moment campers arrive at 9 am until the end of the day at 3 pm.

Below are the Day Camp age groups. Each age group will participate in the Summer at Severn weekly theme! Campers should select the grade they will be entering in the Fall of 2016. See below for weekly themes.

Little Admirals — age 3.5-5 (preschool - prekindergarten)Blue Crabs — Kindergarten - 1st grade

Terps — 2nd and 3rd gradeOrioles — 4th and 5th grade

If target camper enrollments are not met by the start of camp, older age groups may be combined.

CostDay Camps cost $250 per week. For each camper registered for all 6 weeks and paid in full by April 1st, a 15% discount will be applied.

What to Wear and BringCampers should bring a *non-perishable lunch (no refrigeration provided), snack, and a refillable water bottle each day, as well as sunscreen, a swimsuit and a towel for the afternoon pool session (if applicable). No open-toed shoes please. Please include camper’s name on all items brought to camp. *Please note that the Chesapeake Campus is a nut-free campus. A nut-free products list may be viewed at online registration.

Swimming (optional)Each day comes to a refreshing end with a dip in the nearby Severna Park Community Center pool. All Chesapeake Campus campers travel to the pool by bus. The pool itself is divided into six areas, with one area designated for each age group. The Community Center provides lifeguards each day, and the day camp staff adds to the level of both fun and safety with counselors in the water and super-vising from the pool deck. Teel Campus campers will walk to the pool with supervision.

Please note that daily swimming is an option at registration. If your child decides not to swim, counselors and staff will remain on each campus to supervise an activity during pool time. The weekly fee will remain the same.

TransportationTransportation is in accordance with the Severn School Motor Vehicle Safety Policy and Maryland Youth Camp state regulations. The policy may be viewed at online registration.

Please note: We believe it is important for all children to be active and outside each day. Campers will have free time outside on our playground and sports fields several times a day. Many weekly activities and games will be conducted outside, weather permitting. Daily Activities may differ as they are planned for age appropriate camper skills.

Activities may include growing your own salsa and pizza gardens, critter scavenger hunts, constructing a terrarium, building a wormery, and lots of art and crafts from the treasures we find on our nature walks. Let’s get creative and discover surprises in our own “backyard”—it’s alive!

MAD SCIENCE* July 5 - July 8 (no camp July 4)

Experiment with crazy chemistry and cool reactions! Become a scientist and uncover the secrets of chemistry through fun labs where you will experience the wonders of gak, elephant toothpaste, and oobleck, and other ooey, gooey concoctions. Be prepared to get messy in the lab!

ANIMAL PLANETJuly 11 - July 15 Do you love animals as much as we do? Join us for a week of snugly, scaly, fluffy, furry and wild fun! Each day we will learn about animals from a different habitat—the jungle, the desert, the sea, the sky, and the Arctic. Making animals masks, a “pet parade," and tons of fun games, music and activities to unleash the wild animal in you!

TIME TRAVELJuly 18 - July 22 Pack your bags (or just your lunch) as we travel far, far away each day. Monday, visit the prehistoric times and learn about dinosaurs, caves and art on the walls. Tuesday make a toga and let’s go to Ancient Greece (or Rome) to experience a day as a gladiator, a merchant, or royalty. Wednesday we will head out west to spend the day where the buffalo roam and experience cowboy and Native American culture. Thursday will be groovy as we explore the 1960’s, including the crazy clothes, music and events that made this the decade of cool! Friday we zoom to the future and imagine life in the 22nd century.

CREATIVE CHALLENGES - MAKER WEEKJuly 25 - July 29

Do you like taking things apart and putting them back together? Are you curious and like to tinker? Spend a week designing, build-ing and testing. This combination of play and discovery will allow your imagination to soar! Be part of a team to create and solve problems or create an invention all your own. You will learn by doing. Activities are age appropriate and may include, constructing a cardboard arcade, designing a marble roller coaster, creating your own shelter, or inventing your own game (and teaching others how to play it).
