Throughout 2016, the King Baudouin Foun-dation United States (KBFUS) worked hard to further strengthen its position as the leading resource for philanthropic giving to Europe and Africa. And a stellar year it was! Thanks to the generosity of our do-nors, KBFUS facilitated $22.3 million in grants to hundreds of projects across both continents. We opened a record num-ber of 63 new donor-advised, legacy and American friends funds, which brings the total to an impressive 261 funds under our management. Launched in 2015, KBFUS ART is getting traction as well - KBFUS re-ceived a spectacular painting by Luc Tuy-mans in 2016, now to be admired at the Royal Atheneum in Antwerp, Belgium. As always, we welcome your questions or feed-back, and look forward to our con-tinued collabora-tion in 2017!

A flexible tool to make recurring donations overseasA donor-advised fund at KBFUS is a flexible tool for individuals, families and corporate donors wishing to support nonprofits overseas on a regular basis. Donors can contribute to their fund whenever it suits them, claim an immediate tax deduction, and recommend grants to their favorite nonprofits at a later date.

The Life Giving Water Fund, a donor-ad-vised fund established by Richard Ha-choose, Dale and Deborah Van Aken, granted $120,750 to the People’s Action Forum (PAF) in Zambia. PAF works to improve the lives of rural communities, in particular by providing them with access to safe water. The grant is being used to drill 30 new water wells, serving up to 30,000 people in the most rural parts of the country.

Tony Julius left his tiny, isolated village of Kypa-rissi, Greece at the beginning of the 20th century, seeking a better future in the United States. But he never forgot his roots. Today, his memory lives on thanks to the Tony Julius Legacy Fund. In 2016, Kyparissi used $14,000 to develop new climbing routes in surrounding mountains. An excellent way to boost its position as a top climbing destination!

CUSTOMIZED SERVICES FOR U.S. DONORS

A lasting commitment to future generations

Our legacy funds enable donors to create a charitable legacy that will make gifts in their name,in perpetuity or for a specific number of years, to promote the causes or organizations they cherish, anywhere in Europe or Africa. Contributions can be made during the donor’s lifetime and/or through a charitable bequest.

UHAI EASHRI (Kenya), Africa’s first indigenous activist fund, supports sexual and gender minori-ties and sex workers throughout Eastern Africa. In 2016, the UHAI EASHRI US Fund at KBFUS raised close to $300,000 from U.S. donors eager to help them achieve equality, dignity and justice for all.

In 2016, KBFUS ART received a spectacular painting by Luc Tuymans. Entitled Munich and measuring 150 inches high by 79 inches wide, the painting has an estimated value of $ 2.5 million. It can now be admired at the Royal Atheneum in Antwerp, Belgium, where Tuymans grew up.

A cost-effective solution to raise funds in the U.S.With an American friends fund at KBFUS, European and African nonprofits can receive tax-deductible gifts from U.S. donors, while saving the trouble and expense of setting up their own charity in the United States.

Solutions for European & African Nonprofits

Giving artworks and collections to museums abroad

KBFUS ART receives artworks and collections from U.S. donors and places them in museums all across Europe and Africa. Working with KBFUS, donors gain an experienced partner to navigate the cultural, legal and tax complexities involved in donating art overseas.

OF OUR EXPENSES WENT TO GRANTS AND PROGRAMS

Innovative learning opportunities

Corporate Philanthropy AND CSR in Europe:

Thirteen executives from American corporate foundations participated in our total immersion site visit to Brussels, Belgium in September 2016. Organized every other year, the program provides a window into the changing role of philanthropy in Europe and enables participants to see first-hand how successful giving programs can be developed in a European context.

The Art AND Science of Fundraising:

Sixty two executives from European and African universities and cultural institutions joined us for our two study visits on the Art & Science of Fundraising in 2016. During four days of discussions with New York City’s most talented fundraisers, they explored creative solutions to broaden their funding. Both programs were generously supported by the American Express Foundation.
