DONGARA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
An Independent Public School
2016 SCHOOL REPORT
From the Principal
I am pleased to present the 2016 School Report. Dongara DHS experienced a very successful 2016
school year with our students achieving well academically, culturally and in the sporting arena. We again
received commendation from ACARA for demonstration of substantial above gains in our NAPLAN
results, this time for our 2016 year 5 and 9 students. ACARA identified and acknowledged schools
across Australia who demonstrated substantial improvement in both reading and numeracy. “On behalf
of ACARA, I would like to extend my congratulations to you and your school community on this
achievement. Gains of this magnitude are significant…” Robert Randall, CEO ACARA. One of our School
Business Plan focus areas is Support for All Students and these NAPLAN results clearly indicate that
the high quality of teaching and learning programs at Dongara DHS are having a positive impact on
Improved student outcomes. The school community is very proud of these academic achievements and they reflect the
commitment of our dedicated teachers and support staff, our supportive parents and the wider community.
We plan to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged due to geographical isolation. We provide out students with an
opportunity to expand and enrich their schooling experience through academic, sporting and cultural opportunities. In 2016
we experienced both primary and secondary sporting success at carnivals such as Interschool Swimming and Athletics, and
Inters School Cross Country. Some of our students went on to try out for state teams. Our year 7-10 DHS Country Week
Mixed Basketball Team won the Sportsmanship Award. Our YOH Festival Team once gain reached the state finals. Our
students achieved at a high level in a number of literary awards including Tim Winton Young Writers, Randolph Stow and
Write a Book in a Day.
This Annual Report describes key areas of our school’s performance and achievements over 2016. The Report should be
considered together with information from other sources including our school website, student progress reports, house
points, teacher-parent interviews, school newsletters and informal contact with members of staff. Dongara DHS continues to
be a vibrant, successful and proud Independent Public School School. I sincerely thank the school and wider community for
their contribution.

From the School Board Chairperson
The School Board (the Board) has a number of important governance responsibilities that includes,
but not limited to, strategic and business planning, school community advocacy and relationship
building, relevant policy formulation and adoption and consideration and acceptance of student
charges and contributions.
However, especially as an independent public school, I feel one of the most critical responsibilities
the Board has, and which is shared by all within our school community, is to ensure our efforts and
endeavours lead to better student outcomes.
It is in this context that the Board saw the very welcome advice the school received in 2016 from the Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) that identified our school as having demonstrated substantially above average
gain in NAPLAN results as a significant achievement for our students but is also a key indicator that the professional and
dedicated work of our Principal, Mrs Janine Calver and her staff in developing evidence-based subject and teaching strategies
is leading to better student outcomes.
In addition, as it shows the vibrancy of our school and community, the Board, through its regular meeting schedule, is kept
appraised (and constantly amazed) of the numerous school-based and extra-curricular achievements of our students and staff.
These positive outcomes provide a strong foundation and augur well for the external review of the school’s IPS status in 2018.
To our Principal, Mrs Janine Calver, our valued Staff and my fellow Board Members, may I take this opportunity to express
my appreciation for your assistance and your efforts during the past year.

Our School Business Plan Focus Areas
The Business Plan outlines the strategic intent of Dongara DHS towards quality improvement strategies in academic and non-academic areas. The
targets and milestones in this Business Plan indicate the level of progress towards achieving our three focus areas:
1. Success for all students;
2. A safe and supportive learning environment; and
3. Sustainable partnerships and pathways
Our School Operational Plan Priority Areas
The Operational Plans provide more explicate information on how the school will progress towards achieving the Business Plan Focus Areas. At the start
of each school year the Operational Plan review is presented by staff to staff and the School Board at a review session. The priority areas for the
following year are set and staff plan for student improvement based on the review data. Our 2016 Priority area were:
Literacy K-12- Improved literacy outcomes for all students with a focus on the Whole School Literacy Plan – Language.
Numeracy K-12 Improved numeracy outcomes for all students with a focus on the Whole School Numeracy Plan - Problem solving.
Health & Wellbeing K-12 Building resilience and participation.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) -K-6 Improved science outcomes for all students. 7-12 Improved outcomes for all
students in Science, Technology and Numeracy.
This report describes the school performance in 2016.
Our School Context
Dongara DHS is an Independent Public School providing primary and secondary
education to students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who live in the Shire of Irwin in
the Mid West of WA. The 2016 Semester one census showed a total student
population of 423 students.
At Dongara DHS we choose respect, we are responsible and we achieve our
best. These are our school wide behaviour expectations for all members of our
school community. We are proud of our school motto ‘Achieve with Honour’ and
work hard at ensuring we all display these qualities as we go about our daily work at
school. We are very proud of our state of the art buildings and pleasing grounds
which are superbly maintained and aesthetically pleasing creating an inspirational
working environment for students, staff and parents. The School Board and staff are
committed to providing excellence in educational facilities and programs.
The Dongara DHS mission is to provide students with the opportunity to achieve
their academic, social, creative and physical potential which will enable them to be
informed and positive contributors to society.
FOCUS AREA 1: Success for all students
At Dongara DHS our teachers and support staff are committed to providing
quality learning opportunities for our students to be engaged and to reach
their potential.
We regularly monitor the academic performance of individual students and
sub groups whilst our whole school performance targets are based on year
3, 5, 7 and 9 Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN), Student Achievement Reports
in Semester 1 and 2 and the Western Australian Certificate of Education
(WACE).
NAPLAN Performance in 2016
The following data is taken from the National Assessment Program for
Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2016. The data shows the % of students
who are at or above the National Minimum Standard (NMS). The NMS are
the agreed standards of performance across Australia. The transient nature
of our student population is reflected in the NAPLAN results. When looking
at data the school has an emphasis on the Stable Cohort and Like Schools.
We continue to implement the Whole School Literacy and Numeracy Plans
to improve student outcomes.
Year Reading Writing Spelling Grammar Numeracy
3 94 100 93 95 98
5 93 90 95 85 100
7 100 78 89 89 89
9 86 67 86 76 95
Since 2013, ACARA has released information on schools that demonstrate substantially above average gain as students’ progress from Year 3 to
Year 5 and from Year 7 to Year 9 (Year 5-7 data is not included by ACARA) and identifies schools that demonstrated substantially above average in
their NAPLAN results. Identified high gain schools demonstrated substantial NAPLAN improvement in both reading and numeracy as follows;
1. An overall gain that exceeds the national average by more than on standard deviation unit; and
2. An overall gain higher than school with similar ICSEA levels, by more than on standard deviation unit; and
3. An overall gain higher than that shown by students with the same NAPLAN staring score, also by more than on standard deviation unit
This was a significant achievement for our school, affirming that our high level teaching and learning programs are having a positive impact on
student outcomes and we are proud to share this commendation. “I am pleased to advise that ACARA has identified your school as having
demonstrated substantially above average gain in NAPLAN results. On behalf of ACARA, I would like to extend my congratulations to
you and your school community on this achievement. Gains of this magnitude are significant and worthy of highlighting and
acknowledgement.” Robert Randell CEO ACARA 2017.
Progress Data for Reading, and Numeracy-DDHS does not include year 5-7 data as less than 15 students were tested. The Stable cohort are
those student who have been at Dongara DHS for their past two NAPLAN tests.
Literacy & Numeracy Priority Areas
Our Whole School Literacy and Whole School numeracy Plans ensure
that there is seamless approach from one year to the next. The plans
ensures that teachers are following a consistent scope and sequence in
the delivery of the Australian Curriculum. There is also a schedule of
assessments that teachers follow for the year. The school has a
dedicated fulltime Literacy Coordinator and part time Numeracy
Coordinator.
We we will continue to work hard on improving outcomes for all students
with a focus on moving our student data closer towards the NAPLAN
National Mean. We also acknowledge that loss of academic students to
other schools after year 6 has an impact on our NALAN data. As such we
focus closely on identifying individual students and develop IEPs and
IGPs. We also acknowledge that care must be taken when interpreting
the data when our school only has a small number of students tested, as
with the year 7 cohort. We carefully consider the semester 1 and 2
Student Achievement Report Data and compare this to the NAPLAN. The
recommendations and Priority areas as a result of the whole school
review of the English and Mathematics Operational Plans are:
K-12 Literacy -Improved literacy outcomes for all students in writing with
a focus on Paragraphs and Audience.
K-12 Numeracy -Improved numeracy outcomes for all students with a
focus on Number and Word Problem Solving. K-2-Language.

FOCUS AREA 2: A safe and supportive learning environment
At Dongara DHS we will provide safe, supportive and motivating spaces for student learning and well-being.
Health & Wellbeing Priority Area
The school implemented and continued to maintain a wide variety of strategies to address Student Health & Wellbeing:
Crunch and Sip Program, Healthy Food and Drink Policy-School/P&C, high-visible vests for Duty Teachers, Classroom
Management Strategies program, Secondary DOT Point System, Good Kids-Good Stuff in the playground, the Chaplaincy
program, a partnership with Head Space and our ongoing partnership with the Dongara Police are some of the many
strategies used in the school. The Aussie of the Month Virtue has seen an improved whole school commitment and focus
on values. The school partnership with SDERA and the CHAT program requires further commitment from the school as the
progress for implementation has been slow. The partnership with the Travel Smart Project has folded due to factors out of
our control. The staff have also significantly progressed the implementation of the Positive Behaviours in Schools
Framework. Explicit lessons in relation to our behaviour expectations are taught and we are now providing incentives to
students in recognition of them demonstrating the expectation. Teachers are using Class Dojos or Tickets to acknowledge
students. Our data continues to show improved student behaviour across the school as reflected in the year 1-12 Student
Personal House Point data and Secondary PBS Ticket data. Our duty file referral system was modified to bring it in line
with our School Wide Behaviour Expectations. We will review comparative data at then end of 2017.

Student Suspension Data
We continue to see a reduction in student suspensions. This can be attributed to the ongoing implementation PBS across
the school community.
2014: Students-29 Days-34 2015: Students-15 Days-24 2016: Students- 7 Days-20
Attendance
In 2016 we monitored our student attendance on a daily and weekly basis and communicated in writing and phone calls
with parents regarding attendance concerns. There was an effort to improve communication strategies and to make the
school more friendly and responsive to family needs. The school attempted to engage with the Regional Participation Team
and referred a number of disengaged Senior School Students in an endeavour to find a suitable pathway other than school.
We were unsuccessful due to matters out of our control and this has had an impact on our school attendance data.
Families going on holidays during school terms has also had an impact on attendance data. MSM messages were used for
families of students in year 6-12. Our Skool Bag App provided parents access to electronic absentee forms. There will be
focus in 2017 on the use the Department Attendance Tool Kit to communicate with parents and develop plans

FOCUS AREA 3: SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS AND PATHWAYS
At Dongara DHS we will promote positive involvement, connection and collaboration with our school and wider community.
PARENT, STUDENT AND TEACHER SATISFACTION
The School Board surveys the School Community every two years and this information helps our school to find out about parent, student and staff school
satisfaction. Australian Education Ministers have determined that all Australian schools will participate in parent, student and staff opinion surveys. As a
consequence, all WA public schools are required to administer parent, student and staff National School Opinion Surveys (NSOS) at least every two years,
commencing in 2014. The National School Opinion Survey was last administered at Dongara DHS in 2016. Students from year 5-12 completed the survey in
class, all Staff were asked to complete the survey and the Board invited all Parents to complete the survey. The School Board was delighted with the Parent
Response rate with 108 returns compared to 31 returns (after a second round) in 2014. This was due to the Board actively promoting the survey amongst
parents and providing laptop computers for parents to complete the online survey at Open Night.
Parent Survey: 108 responses Student Survey: 127 responses year 5-12
Staff Survey: 35 responses
In addition to the NSOS the School Board provides parents ,whose children have
left the school, with an opportunity to provide feedback via an Exit Survey. The
Exit Survey provides valuable information relating to parent satisfaction. Return
rate has been low for a number of years. Feedback continues on following page.
The Board and the School use the data collected from the NSOS and the Exit
Survey to plan for improvement. This is done at Board meetings and at the Whole
School Operation Plan Review Day.
