ABOUT MEI’m a third year architecture student at Monash University. In my two years’ experience with architecture, I have begun to develop my own personal point of view about the world of design. I am constantly attempting to push a brief as far as possible, and approach each task with enthusiasm and positivity.

HARD TIME | TREE CHANGESTUDIO: HARD TIMETUTOR: HANNES MCNAMARAYEAR: YEAR 2, SEM 2Task one required that we design a country residence on 68 Bowden street, Castlemaine. We were to use 3 materials found in the Castlemaine salvage yard, in order to create a home that represented our individual interests and needs. I was particular-ly interested in the Eureka Tower gold glass found at the salvage yard, and decided to create a golden box which jutted out into the view of the town, housing a music room. This was the main feature of my design, and informed all other design descisions.

HARD TIME | GAOLSTUDIO: HARD TIMETUTOR: HANNES MCNAMARA
YEAR: YEAR 2, SEM 2
PROJECT: In this studio we were required to create an alternative to the Old Castlemaine Gaol, which has been neglected for over 20 years. We were told to be bold, creative and unapologetic in our designs. I chose to create a 270 metre high entertainment complex housing casinos, bars, sports centres, a hotel and an indoor beach. The design was inspired by the rising house prices in Melbourne’s city, forcing city-lovers further into the suburbs, and eventually, the country.I created the Golden Nugget as a city inside a country town, and a mode of escap-ism for Castlemaine’sresidents.

The overall form of the building wasinspired by a nugget of gold, referencing Castlemaine’s Goldrushpast, as well as alluding to the opulence and greed that lies within the complex.

I had previously created an escalator as the main point of entry to my project. I deceded to further the sense of narrative in my project, and therefore chose to begin the users’ journey at the Railway Hotel; the local pub at the bottom of the hill. The user would line up outside the pub before going inside to order a drink from the local bartender. They would then make their way out the back door and onto a chairlift, before ascending up into the soaring Utopian beacon.

I aimed to create sections that clearly showed program, circulation and connections between old and new. Here, I have shown the three main towers in my proposal, and the ways in which the user can circulate the building. The central elevators are the main points of travel, but there are internal stairs that create added points of connection. I have chosen to show the gaol in gray, further enhancing the contrast between the colourful Golden Nugget and the unpleasant prison below.

I have chosen to include detail sections to show the juxtaposition between old and new spaces, and the ways in which people interact with them. I have exaggerated the sense of Utopia within the GoldenNugget, and the sense of gloom in the old Gaol. The difference in material, colour and form is moreobvious at this scale.

STUDIO: TINSEL TOWNTUTOR: MONIQUE + SCOTT WOODWARDYEAR: YEAR 2, SEM 1
In this task, we were required to study the characteristis of various films and interpret their visual language in an architectural way. Our designs did not necessarily have to be buildings as such, but rather spaces that capture the mood of a particular film. We then had to create a set of drawings that best represent the ambiance of the film, and therefore of our design.

STUDIO: TINSEL TOWNTUTOR: MONIQUE + SCOTT WOODWARDYEAR: YEAR 2, SEM 1
Using the designs that were inspired by the visual language of film, we were required to create a built gesture that connects each individual space. We were to create a program for the overall built environment, and connect each disparate element both visually and conceptually.I created ‘The Intestine’, wrapping its way through Melbourne’s city, engulfing the morcels of built form. The space is programmed to act as a medical centre.

During my time at WOWOWA, I worked on aKitchen extension for a Brunswick home. The clients wanted something that respects the heritage of the Victorian house in a contemporaryand aesthetically interesting way. I came up with over 50 different takes on geometry, but later focused on only a few. These conceptual renders/ collages capture an essence of the material properties of the design.

I experimented with different geometric forms, some being sympathetic to the existing condition of the home, and others juxtaposing the Victorianbuilding. Here, I have created a rectilinearstructure that appears to melt from the existing roof. Although I like the flow from the roof to the lowest point of the extension, I don’t think it responds specifically to the client’s needs.

In tech class, we are required to design projects according to the limitations of certain buildingmaterials. In this project, the entire building was to be made of brick, and we were to create clear drawings to represent our designs.
