80 FILMMAKER FALL 2010
PARTING SHOT
ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU
In his features Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel, Alejandro González Iñárritu has grippingly depicted flawed characters seek-ing redemption while enduring the worst of what life has to offer.
Whether by a cruel God, a screenwriter’s pen, or the indignities of an editor’s mouse pad, Iñárritu’s heroes live in a world in which random tragedy is more certainty than chance. At times, his films have almost seemed to be Rube Goldberg machines of miserabilism, and, at first glance, his new Biutiful would appear to be no different. Javier Bar-dem plays Uxbal, a small-time operator working the mean streets of Barcelona, hustling money in schemes ranging from running illegal immigrants to disinterring his father’s grave. For Uxbal, the moral
paucity of these endeavors is highlighted by the introspection result-ing from his terminal cancer diagnosis. As his health fades, we watch
as he attempts to set his affairs in order, connecting with his two small children and estranged bipolar wife. Bardem imbues Uxbal with a haunting gravity, and while Biutiful has as many tragedies per reel as Iñárritu’s other works, the tone is more generous and the plotting less
schematic. Iñárritu’s meditation on mortality succeeds by realizing that some things in life just don’t resolve, that metaphors aren’t always
easy, but that we all find ways to finally make peace with ourselves. — Scott Macaulay, Photograph by Henny Garfunkel

“I love that FILMMAKER bucks box office trends and celebrates and lifts up diverse independent filmmakers — it’s not just lovely,
it’s necessary."
“FILMMAKER was one of the very first magazines to write about my work (when I was still making short films) and they still are the only film magazine that manages
to predict the future again and again. They also stay up to the minute on newtechnology, distribution methods — and have always bucked the sexism in theindustry. Recently a new series on a major network asked me for a list of young
women directors — when I ran out of names I turned toThe '25 New Faces’ and quickly discovered some
shining talent to add to the list.”
“FILMMAKER keeps me in touchwith virtually every strand of
filmmaking that makes up the independent world today — fromemerging student filmmakers to masters from abroad. I learn so much from each issue, and each issue inspires me to learn more.”
“FILMMAKER began around the same time I started film school
— the fall of 1992. Iremember the early passion in
the magazine — those first issues were exciting and
informative. Years later much has changed in the world of film...
however, the magazine is as pure and vital as ever. Its enormous contribution to our film culture
cannot be overestimated.”1111
