Many people know a friend or relative who has fallen, perhaps due to a slip
while walking, or feeling dizzy when standing up from a chair. Maybe
you've fallen yourself?
You're not alone. More than one in three people age 65 years or older fall
each year. The risk of falling -- and fall-related problems -- rises with age.
Fear of falling, particularly during the winter months, becomes more
common with age, even among those who haven't fallen. It may lead you
to avoid activities such as walking, shopping, or taking part in social
activities.
If you or someone you know is fearful of falling, Knowsley's Falls & Wellbeing Service
can offer advice, support and equipment to help you. There's also a programme to help you improve your
balance, posture and your walking confidence.
Helping you to reduce your fear of falling can help you to stay active, maintain your physical health, and
prevent future falls.
You can talk with your doctor or another health or social care professional. They can refer you to the Falls &
Wellbeing Service, or you can contact the service yourself:

Each year billions of pounds of benefits intended to help older people
goes unclaimed.
These include Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, and other
financial help that may be available depending on peoples’
circumstances.
There are many reasons why older people do not claim financial top ups, but
it is important to remember that this is money that you are entitled to!
Just because you've not qualified in the past doesn't mean that you won't now. The rules are
complex and constantly changing, and if you've previously had savings that prevented you
from claiming – these may now have now fallen to a level that would qualify.
There are a number of local agencies who can help you to check your circumstances and
claim your entitlement!
What's available locally?

Following a healthy, balanced diet is important for our health as it can help
protect our bodies from health related diseases such as:
A healthy diet includes fruits and vegetables; carbohydrates; meat and

diet will help you feel your best by giving you energy and boosting your
immune system.
In addition to eating the right foods, being active will improve your physical

Knowsley Carers Centre is an independent, local registered charity
and network partner of Carers Trust. We provide a range of
services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers
throughout Knowsley.
A carer is a person who provides unpaid support to a partner,
child, relative or friend who can't always manage to live
independently or whose health or well-being would deteriorate
without this help. This could be due to frailty, disability or serious
health condition, mental ill health or substance misuse. Often
people do not see themselves as 'carers' - they are just family
members, friends or neighbours who find themselves in a caring role,
sometimes suddenly, sometimes gradually, and simply get on with what
needs to be done. A carer may not always live with the person they care for, but
their help may be essential in enabling that person to go on living independently.
Knowsley Carers Centre offers a range of services including information and advice, benefits advice,
holistic therapies, support groups, social events, advocacy, training activities and counselling.

Knowsley aims to reduce the amount of unused and wasted prescribed
medicines across the Borough. This would then save money that could
be spent on more nurses and doctors for example.
To achieve this we need your help.
Remember, if you do not order an item one month, it does not mean that it cannot be ordered at a later date.
Once medicines have been dispensed, they cannot be reused and are then destroyed.

Have you ever been told that you have won a prize draw, holiday or
lottery but you don't remember entering a competition? Criminals
worldwide are sending MASS MARKETING letters and making
phone calls which trick millions of people into parting with
billions of pounds every year. Fake lottery and prize draws,
clairvoyant scams, catalogue scams, health drinks and vitamin
supplements sales the list is endless!
They're designed to look official and are often
personalised to make you believe you're special and have
won a guaranteed prize. Knowsley Trading Standards
advise you to ignore these offers - here are some more
tips:
Never send any money in order to receive a prize
Never send money to someone you don't know.
Never give your personal or bank details to anyone.
Don't ring the premium rate number. Often the cost of the call is more
than the prize is worth.
If in doubt, don't reply. Bin it, delete it or hang up.
Computer firms do not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer.
Don't suffer in silence – tell others about scams and remember: If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Get ready for the winter months ahead by getting your free
winter jabs for flu and shingles.
free for all over 65sFlu vaccinations are and people with long
term conditions. For the majority of people, flu is an
unpleasant illness, but getting older and having underlying
health conditions can mean that catching flu can be more
severe or even life-threatening. An annual flu jab will help to
prevent flu. Remember you need a vaccination every year as
flu viruses can change each year.
Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it and
causes a painful rash that develops into itchy blisters lasting for
several weeks. As you get older you have a greater chance of
developing it.
. If you are eligible you only
need to have it once to reduce the risk of developing the shingles virus.
For more information on flu and shingles go to the NHS Choices website
To book an appointment for your seasonal flu jab contact your GP surgery or local pharmacy.
Shingles vaccination is free to some people over 70 so

Cold weather over the next few months can be dangerous for older people, so follow the tips
below to ensure you stay safe during the cold weather:-
Have plenty of hot food and drinks
Wear lots of thin layers (clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres)
Homes should be heated to the right temperature: at least 18°C (65°F)
If you can't heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and your
bedroom just before you go to bed
Check on elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours
If you have a gas/solid fuel appliance/ boiler, consider getting an audible
carbon monoxide alarm and test it weekly - it can save your life.
Keep heaters and fires away from clothes, blankets and other
combustible materials
Electric Blankets – check the wires are not frayed and they are safe
to use. Don't leave them on unattended
Residents in Knowsley may be able to benefit from
free boiler and heating repairs and in certain cases
new boiler and central heating installations.
To be eligible for assistance residents must be aged 60 and over with a
long term health condition and either be in receipt of eligible benefits or
on a low income. To find out more about the scheme call the Council's
Energy Officer on 0151 443 5817.

Telecare lifeline alarms can provide you and your family with the reassurance of
knowing that help is only the push of a button away. A lifeline alarm unit is
linked to your telephone line and is able to send an emergency call to the 24
hour control centre if you need help.
The service:
Provides reassurance to you and your family
Helps you to remain living independently
Provides equipment and installation free of charge
A small weekly charge is made for the monitoring service.
Lifeline alarms are available to anyone who lives in Knowsley and has a long-term illness, sight or hearing loss or
a physical or learning disability. The service can also support people who suffer with dementia, are at high risk of
falling or just need a little help to remain living independently.
Other sensors
A range of sensors can be linked to your alarm unit and can inform the control centre if there is a fire, carbon
monoxide leak, a flood or if you have had a fall. Other sensors can also detect that someone has managed to get
in and out of bed safely or has left the property.

Everyone in Knowsley has a right to live in safe and secure surroundings
without fear of harassment or harm. Sadly, some people are denied
this opportunity by others who subject them to harm or abuse
Abuse can be:
Physical, such as shaking or hitting
Psychological or emotional- such as humiliating,
depriving, or ignoring
Financial – such as stealing money or belongings
Neglect – such as failure to provide care or seek
medical advice
What should you do if you think someone is being abused or
neglected?
It's important that you tell someone if you suspect that you, or an older
person you know is being abused or neglected. You may be the only person who's
aware of it, and by telling someone you can help to stop it.
