As President of the Helping Paws Board of Directors as well as a graduate of the program, I feel both pride in, and gratitude for, this great organization. I am proud of what we accomplished this year, our first full year of placing assistance dogs with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Started as a pilot in 2013, the program has become a full-fledged success—and this year, four veterans are now partnered with service dogs who will nuzzle away nightmares, decrease their social isolation, offer love and companionship, and quite simply, improve their quality of life. These four dogs have become True Blue Best Friends for Life to these individuals who sacrificed so much for our country.

In addition to our four Veteran placements, we have delivered on our mission to further people’s independence and quality of life through the use of Assistance Dogs with many more noteworthy accomplishments:

• 12 skilled Assistance Dogs have been placed with individuals with disabilities; 7 were first time placements and 5 were successor dogs for individuals whose previous assistance dog retired or passed away;

• 1 highly trained Facility Dog was placed with an organization that works to enhance the quality of life of teenagers who struggle in a traditional classroom;

• 98 Assistance Dogs-in-training are currently being raised by of our dedicated and passionate Foster Home Trainers;

• 22 puppies were born and lovingly cared for by our devoted Caretaker Homes;

• 90 graduate teams have been provided with one-to-one follow-up assistance; and

• Our volunteers donated over 137,500 hours to our programs and services with an estimated value of over $3.1 million

But pride isn’t all I feel. I am also grateful to Helping Paws for the ways Baylor, my own Assistance Dog, enables me to be more independent and self-sufficient. By performing countless activities of daily life from picking up dropped keys, to opening doors to helping me with laundry, Baylor improves my life every day. I can truly say that like the true blue vests they wear, Helping Paws Assistance Dogs become True Blue Friends for Life to people who need them.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the contributions and support of our volunteers, donors, sponsors, and staff. On behalf of the Board of Directors, our heartfelt thanks for all you so capably do.

Tess

MAcYand

GratefulAt age 26, Tess loved her job as a Hospice social worker. But a year ago last April, she found out she had an aggressive tumor growing on her spine. Choosing to fi ght and live, Tess underwent surgery in August, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. While others may have been tempted to give up, Tess knows she’s destined to live a great life and intends to do so, making each day worthwhile. Her philosophy is simple: “If it’s cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile.”

This past spring, Tess was matched with service dog Macy, and the two have an uncanny ability to sense each other’s moods. Says Tess, “Macy and I seem to have an understanding of each other that’s hard to explain. When either of us are in a funk, the other one knows how to lovingly get her out of it.”

Macy is also helpful on many other fronts, helping Tess get dressed and undressed, opening doors, picking up dropped items, and the like. And Tess enthusiastically gives as much as she gets. “I’m excited to have and be Macy’s companion, her go-to person for all that she needs. If she could speak, she might say in turn that she loves my playful and nurturing personality.”

With Macy by her side, her ‘before’ life seems possible again. Says Tess, “I am excited to see where we are in six months or a year and can look back at these days, thinking, WOW so much has changed!” Grateful for all of the effort that brings an Assistance Dog to their destiny, Tess thanks the Cherwinka family as well as all the supporters, staff, foster homes, and other people or businesses that are involved in carrying out the Helping Paws mission.

Her own mission is much on her mind. “I’m looking forward to getting back to work, where I can continue to help others and again fi nd purpose in my every day.” With Macy’s help, she will.

A calm and steadying presence

A veteran of the Marines who served in Vietnam, Paul has suffered the debilitating effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disease (PTSD) for more than 40 years. Recently, he was matched with Franny, a Golden Retriever, through Helping Paws’ Veterans with PTSD program.

Paul’s adventures with Franny started on the morning of their fi rst day together, when he was awakened by the dog gently licking his hand. It was only afterward that he realized that he’d been having a nightmare and that Franny was already working¬—waking him slowly and gently, just as she’d been trained to do, a calm and steadying presence in the face of terror.

That was the beginning.

Paul and Franny’s fi rst big outing was a day at the State Fair. At the WCCO Radio Booth, broadcaster Dave Lee noticed there was a dog in the front row and asked Paul her name while “on the air.” Lee then noted that Franny was a Helping Paws Assistance Dog, mentioning what an amazing service Helping Paws provides and the help that they give to people with disabilities. Later as they moved around the fairgrounds, Paul was asked if “this the same Franny she’d heard about on WCCO Radio.” Yes, she is, and Franny obligingly shook the woman’s hand. Says Paul, “I guess Franny has one more cue to learn—the one for signing “paw-tographs”!

A helper and his sidekickIt’s fi tting that Jack Carlos found Helping Paws when he needed help himself. Jack is a helper by nature—fi rst working in law enforcement and then as a missionary in Africa, where he provided basic health care to those who had none. He was in France with his wife, Cathy, preparing for their mission to West Africa when his neurological symptoms fi rst appeared.

After an early misdiagnosis of Parkinson’s, Jack learned he actually had Machado-Joseph disease, a genetic and more debilitating disorder that causes balance problems, stiffness, and tremors. “It was hard news to take,” he says.

Jack and Cathy had always been dog lovers, but the idea of getting of a service dog hadn’t occurred to them until they saw “Lucky Dog,” a TV series about dogs that are rescued, trained, and placed with owners in need of canine assistance. They investigated local resources without success until a friend suggested Helping Paws.

Jack immediately began the application process that matched him with Zara earlier this year. “It was incredible,” Jack says. “I felt like I won the lottery!” Training with Zara, he had to learn the 80 commands she already knew. “I needed to catch up with the dog,” he laughs. But by the end of the training, he felt very confi dent.

And very connected. “I’ve had dogs before and loved all of them,” Jack says. “But we really have this bond with one another. Anywhere I go, anything I do, Zara is watching me.” At night, he sometimes has severe muscle spasms, and she’s right there, head on the bed.

A longtime comic book collector, Jack likens Zara, in her blue vest and Gentle Leader, to his sidekick (think Batman and Robin). “When you go out into the world, people notice you,” Jack says. “You and your sidekick who does all these things to help you.”

He’s amazed at how Zara changed his life in just a few months, and he credits her with restoring his independence. “I feel like I can do anything because I have Zara,” he says. Jack hopes to get back to helping others, volunteering at his church’s food shelf and dental clinic. “That’s just stuff I wouldn’t have done before. She’s really encouraging me,” he says. “What a gift, an incredible gift!”

Hey, we got this!

Joe Kolfage is an Army Infantry veteran who conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004-2005. Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2005 after leaving Active Duty, Joe has lived for over a decade with the symptoms of a disorder that can be very crippling. After several years of treatment, he enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard, but suffered a devastating setback during a training exercise.

Joe’s wife, Kat, came across Helping Paws while researching PTSD. She believed that having a service dog by his side might help alleviate the stress, anxiety, and isolation that Joe was enduring, and they began the process.

Enter Bogey, a charismatic and fun-loving retriever with a Golden’s big heart. Since their pairing, Bogey has helped restore Joe’s independence and ability to travel outside of his home. And Joe has found a battle buddy in Bogey, gaining confi dence from the dog’s physical presence and “Hey, we got this!” demeanor. In public, Bogey automatically creates a blocking position for Joe, who knows that Bogey’s got his back. When Joe’s anxiety level rises, Bogey will nudge his hand or leg to reassure him and ground him in the present. At home, he demonstrates the same caring behavior and has become attuned to Joe’s emotional state. When he knows that he’s needed, Bogey will rest his head on Joe’s leg, staring up at him and wagging his tail, inviting him to pet or play.

Beyond being Joe’s lifeline and loyal companion, Bogey is a great friend and family member. And while PTSD will likely continue to be a part of life for Joe, having Bogey by his side will make life immeasurably better.

BriAn

sYBiland

Dedica onIn applying for a service dog, Brian Howard envisioned he’d be matched with a big, lovable, male: a pup strong enough to assist with the debilitations that accompany M.S., and one with a big personality to boot. But fate had other plans, and instead Brian was matched with Sybil, a steadfast, compassionate, and small female Golden Retriever. Though not the pairing he pictured, Brian and Sybil embody what is so indescribably unique about the partnership between dog and graduate—the resolute bond and understanding that going forward they’ll do life together, and that it’s decidedly better that way.

Sybil does more than provide physical assistance: she helps make life better psychologically for both Brian and his family. While Sybil displays that inherent Golden friendliness with everyone, she innately understands that Brian is her person, and she never fails to return to his side after making rounds with friends and family.

In their fi rst few months together, Sybil already attunes herself to Brian’s needs in a way that goes beyond verbal cues or hand signals. Unable to call to his wife for assistance over the noise of a vacuum one day, Brian noticed that Sybil took off without any command to do so, and moments later his wife appeared at the sound of Sybil barking to get her attention. Quite simply, Sybil just knew what needed to be done!

In being her dedicated, happy Golden self, Sybil upturned Brian’s idea of what his service dog would look like. Now, together, Sybil and Brian are breaking down people’s ideas of what disabilities look like, and challenge the complacency of a society that doesn’t know how to approach individuals in wheelchairs or coping with disabilities. At the same time, Brian and Sybil’s joyful bond invites interaction and opportunities for education. While they’re only starting their lifelong partnership, Sybil proves every day that surprises, especially ones that come in the form of a loyal Golden Retriever, can be exceptional and grow sweeter with time.

Andrew kirAand

Kira will be my fi rst successor dog through Helping Paws. I look forward to her assisting me in daily activities and routines, which will increase my overall level of independence. I believe she will help me a great deal with tasks such as retrieving objects, bracing to get up off the fl oor, and helping me to get ready in the mornings by placing objects in my basket and bringing me my shoes and braces. Kira will also help me by opening doors and activating elevator switches and accessible doorways. As I learned from my previous relationship with Tonka, Kira will not only help me to be independent, but she will also be a great companion, giving unconditional love as I tackle my life’s goals and seek employment in the Human Services fi eld.

Fate and the facil y dogAshley is a licensed therapist at Headway Emotional Health Services, Hopkins Day Treatment program that combines academics with therapeutic support for teenagers who struggle in a traditional classroom. Ashley has also been involved with Helping Paws for eight years, as her wife, Corbett, has service dog Rocky.

Fate brought Ashley’s two worlds together in 2016. One day Corbett couldn’t bring Rocky to work, so he went off with Ashley to Headway. During a group therapy session, a student was working through an extremely diffi cult situation of grief and loss, and Rocky came to lie down with and comfort her. Ashley says, “The girl buried her face in Rocky’s fur and he laid still with her for a long time while she sobbed. Something magical was happening and I knew right then that our program needed a dog for animal assisted intervention.”

Ashley presented the idea to Helping Paws, and fate took another step forward. Jenga had been in training. But with a recent diagnosis of mild hip dysplasia and a wild mind for distractions, he wasn’t destined for life as a traditional service dog. Eileen decided to bring him to Headway for a couple of hours, to see how he would respond.

“Jenga spent the whole time lying on the fl oor with 12 teenagers rubbing his belly,”

remembers Ashley. “His anxiety disappeared, as if he’d found his purpose, and the kids responded just as beautifully. It was clear we’d found something special for everyone.”

Two weeks later, Jenga was given the new title of Facility Service Dog, and he and Ashley began graduate training together. Jenga is Helping Paws’ second Facility Dog placement, and it’s a very positive step forward for the program.

Over the summer, Jenga continued his work, this time with Ashley’s teens at Headway. Says Ashley, “the kids learned all of Jenga’s commands to improve their connection with him, but they also learned broader life skills, like patience and distress tolerance.”

Then she giggles and adds, “An important part of our program here is goals, so we are setting a fun goal for Jenga. We’re going to teach him to take a selfi e!”

Coaching From experience

Volunteer assistant instructors play an important role in Helping Paws training classes, serving as coaches and providing advice and encouragement during the 2½ to 3 years that it takes a class of dogs to perfect their skills. Volunteer assistant instructors have to know the Helping Paws training protocol and it helps if they have experience with dogs.

One volunteer assistant instructor, Chad Wood, brings a particularly unique perspective and skill set to this role. A C5 quadriplegic, Chad uses a power wheelchair for mobility. Chad received his fi rst service dog, Kalli, in 1999. Then came Jazz in 2011. He was recently matched with his third service dog, Truman, in April 2016.

“My service dogs are such a blessing in my life. After Jazz passed away, I needed to do something to get over the loss and decided I’d like to give back to Helping Paws, who had given so much to me,” said Chad.

Chad was particularly helpful to the foster home trainers in the Big Dog Class that he volunteered at each week. “I was able to give pointers from a wheelchair user’s perspective,” Chad said. “Like how to think about positioning the dog as you go through a doorway, and how to use different commands when the dog returns a retrieved item to someone with limited hand function.”

“It was eye opening for me as well—I learned about the time and effort the foster home trainers put into each dog,” said Chad. “It is amazing to see the patience it takes to teach each foundational skill and then build on them.”

And as it turns out, the Big Dog class that Chad helped with was a date with destiny. He was matched with his third service dog, Truman, after spending weeks watching him train in class.

Chad continues to work as an assistant trainer each week, now with the “D” litter who are currently in the Working Wonders class. “Right off the bat I was surprised by how eager they are to work for just a morsel of food. You give them one little kibble and it means the world to them. And they become so loyal, so quickly.”

Having spent 17 years with a service dog by his side, Chad appreciates the skills, the loyalty and most of all the companionship his Helping Paws dogs have brought to his life. He enjoys every moment of being able to ‘give back.’

Living with a neurological disability, Deb has been a part of the Helping Paws family for the past 15 years. Honor is the fourth service dog to assist her. But the decision to stay in the family wasn’t an easy one.

Deb explains, “Honor joined my life when my previous Helping Paws dog, Tanna, passed away from cancer at only fi ve years old. After that third loss, I wasn’t sure I could do it again. Losing any animal is hard emotionally, but it’s even harder when it’s your four-legged helper who is always there to assist, every hour of every day, no questions asked.”

Despite her reservations, Deb’s son Adam encouraged her to say yes to a successor dog. Adam recently earned his college degree and is leaving home to start a job in law enforcement in the fall. Deb says, “He told me he would worry about me if I didn’t have a service dog, and the decision was made.”

Honor and Deb went through team training in May and they bonded quickly. “He loves to cuddle and was used to sleeping with me in no time,” Deb reports, adding with a grin, “Honor is my fi rst Labrador, and I’m learning important Lab things, like don’t take that tail into the antique store where glassware is at just the right level. He has a goofy attitude and the funniest thing is how excited he gets when he sees me. He will jump so high that all four paws come off the fl oor, even when all I did was go into the bathroom for a minute!”

Yet when it’s time to be serious, Honor is right there, performing assistance tasks like retrieving dropped items and opening doors with calm effi ciency. Deb adds, “He gives much more than just physical help. He also cares for me emotionally. This summer has been diffi cult as my son prepares to be a police offi cer amid the recent news stories. Honor knows when I’m scared and will stay right next to me with some part of his body touching mine, for however long I need that reassurance.”

Reassurance is at the core of every service dog. And Deb knows that for however long, Honor is there to provide it. Wags and all.
