5:00 pm Opening Reception 6:00 pm THEEB Naji Abu Nowar / United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, UK / 100 min / 2014 / Arabic In 1916 while war rages in the Ottoman Empire, Hussein raises his younger brother Theeb (“Wolf”) in a traditional Bedouin community that is isolated by the vast, unforgiving desert. The brothers’ quiet existence is suddenly interrupted when a British Army officer and his guide ask Hussein to escort them to a water well located along the old pilgrimage route to Mecca. So as not to dishonor his recently deceased father, Hussein agrees to lead them on the long and treacherous journey. The young, mischievous Theeb secretly chases after his brother, but the group soon find themselves trapped amidst threatening terrain riddled with Ottoman mercenaries, Arab revolutionaries, and outcast Bedouin raiders. Naji Abu Nowar’s powerful and assured directorial debut, set in the land of Lawrence of Arabia, is a wondrous “Bedouin Western” about a boy who, in order to survive, must become a man and live up to the name his father gave him. https://www.filmmovement.com/filmcatalog/index.asp?MerchandiseID=419 8:00 pm LA MAFIA UCCIDE SOLO D’ESTATE (The Mafia Kills Only In Summer) Pif / Italy / 90 min / 2013 / Italian Pierfrancesco Diliberto (a renowned TV host and political comedian, better known as Pif ) wrote, directed and stars in this subversive, irreverent feature debut about Arturo, a young boy whose obsession with the Mafia’s casual presence in his city surpasses even his passion for Flora, the beautiful schoolmate who remains his main love interest until adulthood. Pif uses Arturo’s unrequited love story as the vehicle to narrate the most tragic events in Italy’s recent history, starting with Cosa Nostra’s criminal actions in Sicily in the ‘70s, which soon spread through the country (encompassing the barbaric murder of judges Falcone and Borsellino, an event that Pif handles with astounding boldness). Winner of the Audience Award at the Torino Film Festival, Mafia is a brave and intelligent dark comedy with a powerful message. http://www.distribfilmsus.com/our-movies/the-mafia-only-kills-in-summer-comingsoon/ 5:00 pm TIMBUKTU Abderrahmane Sissako / France, Mauritania / 97 min / 2014 / French, Arabic, Bambara, English, Songhay A 2015 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film! Not far from Timbuktu, now ruled by religious fundamentalists, Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya, and Issan, their twelve-year-old shepherd. In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. Kidane and his family are being spared the chaos that prevails in Timbuktu. But their destiny changes when Kidane accidentally kills Amadou, the fisherman who slaughtered “GPS,” his beloved cow. He now has to face the new laws of the foreign occupants. Timbuktu is Mauritania’s first entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. http://cohenmedia.net/films/timbuktu Discussion to follow film. 7:00 pm Reception 7:30 pm PHOENIX Christian Petzold / Germany / 98 min / 2014 / German A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany in the stunning new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Jerichow). Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp, but with her face disfigured by a bullet wound. After undergoing reconstructive surgery, Nelly emerges with a new face, one similar but different enough that her former husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), doesn’t recognize her. Rather than reveal herself, Nelly walks into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she tries to figure out if the man she loves may have been the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Evoking the shadows and haunted mood of post-war Berlin, Phoenix weaves a complex tale of a nation’s tragedy and a woman’s search for answers as it builds towards an unforgettable, heart-stopping climax. http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/phoenix SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2016 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2016 2016 International Film Series Foreign film fans will have the opportunity to view a selection of subtitled films from around the globe as Baldwin Wallace University hosts the 2016 International Film Series over two weekends: Friday-Sunday, February 12-14 and Friday-Saturday, February 19-20. 5:00 pm O MENINO E O MUNDO (The Boy and the World) Alê Abreu / Brazil / 80 min / 2013 / Portugese / AnimatedCuca’s cozy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows, and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city, hand crafted and mechanized, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song. The film’s music is on equal footing with the stunning visuals, a soundscape of pan-flute, samba, and Brazilian hip-hop mixing with the whirling carnival colors and exploding fireworks. http://www.gkidsfilms.com/boy/

6:30 pm Reception7:00 pm DEUX JOURS, UNE NUIT (Two Days, One Night) Jean-Pierre Dardenne , Luc Dardenne / Belgium, France, Italy/ 95 min / 2014 / French, Arabic, EnglishOscar winner Marion Cotillard received another nomination for her searing, deeply felt performance as a working-class woman desperate to hold on to her factory job in this gripping film from master Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Cotillard is Sandra, a wife and mother who suffers from depression and discovers that, while she was home on sick leave, a majority of her coworkers voted in favor of her being laid off over giving up their annual bonuses. She then spends a Saturday and Sunday visiting them each in turn, to try to convince them to change their minds. From this simple premise, the Dardennes create a powerfully humane drama about the importance of community in an increasingly impersonal world.http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/two-days-one-night
