BHW honors long-term employees

A luncheon was held on Tuesday, December 13 at Minervas Restaurant to honor employees who have been with BHW for twenty years or more. Seventy-two employees are now members of the Twenty Year Club. Through their dedication to make a difference, they have forged relationships and grown their skills to be among the very best at delivering compassionate care and supports to people with disabilities. “They are all leaving a personal legacy with their impact,” says Brad Saathoff.

By understanding the "why" in all of our jobs, it helps us to be focused on the important things and to know that your work does have meaning and it matters to so many people who's lives are impacted by the skills and talents that you have and are continually developing. This month Natalie Olson, Front Line Leader (FLL) at Hampton Group Home, does an awesome job shar-ing her "why" in her new role.

Natalie’s story: When I was first considered to be an employee at Black Hills Works (before I took the tour at Hamp-ton), I did not have a purpose to be here. I was in need of a job and I knew I worked well with

people and have a strong personality. After meeting everyone at Hampton, learning about different dis-abilities and all the walks of life people came from, I became attached. Once I became attached, I couldn’t just be “mediocre” anymore. I saw where things were faulty and I decided that I would make it my job to work my way to a position where I had some say in the everyday life of the people I came to care about so much. Once I made it to be the Lead Residential at Hampton I had some more control but things were still not where I wanted them. I wanted smiling faces and happy days that were not always “routine” so to say. I pressed on with my vision, through obstacles and ended up FLL at Hampton. There have been many changes with the whole transfer from Team Manager to FLL and the respon-sibilities, I have not been in the house as much as usual and when I recall the times I cannot be on the floor with my team helping out in some way, is when I come up with my purpose. I think my purpose is to be able to inspire and put confidence in the staff that are on the floor, in or-der to provide the best outcome and quality of life for the people we support. If my staff have the job integri-ty and pride that I do, then I can go to sleep each night knowing the people’s lives that are in our hands are being lived how they want them to be… even when I cannot be in the home to supervise or lead by example. That is why I love the transfer we are making. I appreciate that from staff and enjoy providing extra training to those who may need or want it. Being a supervisor may take away from what I can do on the floor all the time, but being a supervisor also means I have the ability to create the spark in more people to have the same vision that I do.

Part of this past year’s work to help BHW/BH Ser-vices have the best team of employees possible has been to study what really makes a job fulfilling and an organization the preferred place to work. We have been able to learn a lot from employees who have done so much to help BHW/BHS be so successful and from data and studies that can help us understand how to do our very best at creating the culture that supports people who want to have a purpose in their work. Barry Schwartz, a psychology professor at Swarthmore College, has done much research on work satisfaction. In his Ted Talks titled "The Way We Think About Work is Broken," he spoke about his research and how the industrial revolution created a factory system in which there was nothing to get out of work except the pay at the end of that day. Adam Smith, one of the creators of the Industrial Revolu-tion, was convinced that human beings were by their natures lazy and wouldn't do anything except for rewards. We now know this is only true if people have work that is demeaning and soulless. Schwartz goes on to say that human beings are unfinished animals and that human nature is much more created than discovered. By designing work environments that have purpose and where people can bring their best and unique self to work everyday, it allows for people to work not only for extrinsic rewards, but for intrinsic values which helps us find fulfillment in our work. I came across the above photo on LinkdIn and I immediately thought of so many of you who exem-plify this. Michelle Amen has been doing some won-derful work with many people on the Residential Ser-vices Team and asking what is their "why" or purpose of doing what they do with BHW/BHS. Over the next several months I will share a few of these with you.

What’s your why?By Brad Saathoff

2017 payroll schedule Best Out & About memoryCongratulations Sheldon Griffith! Sheldon is one of three people who won Rush tickets in Out & About’s re-cent contest. Sheldon wrote the following story about his most memorable Out & About experience. My favorite Out & About adventure was going to Custer State Park with

Gene and some friends. My favorite memory was see-ing the animals. Prairie dogs live in holes. I could see the dirt they dug out of the hole. Gophers were run-ning around. I saw buffalo on the Wildlife Loop. They were close to the car, but we stayed inside the car. Buffalo can hurt you if you get outside the car. I also saw bighorn sheep. The herd is smaller because of a sickness that affects bighorn sheep. I saw donkeys. They were close to our car. I saw antelope. After we saw the animals, we had lunch at a picnic table in the park. I enjoyed spending time with Gene. This is a true story.

Kathleen Hoffman can’t contain her excitement at getting her hair colored for the first time. The stylist was Noell Johnson from Magic Touch Salon.

New look for Kathleen!Send us your photos! We need your photos of the people you support living full lives. Send your photos of people working and playing, learning news skills, and

participating in community life to Dorothy Rosby. They may be used in the newsletter, on the Black Hills Works website, and on social media. Remember to include the names of those pictured in your photos and let us know what is happening in the photo.

Front Line Leaders: Developing team strengths and creating empowered teamsBy Michelle AmanManagement/supervision is doing things right, Lead-ership is doing the right things. The structure of Residential Services is changing. We have introduced several new positions. The Commu-nity Living Supervisor position is being replaced with three Director of Residential Services positions filled by Laura Gibson, Tara Blasius, and Alison Coyle. Mallory Darling remains in the Community Living Supervisor position working with the ITS program. We have created a new position, Front Line Leader, which replaces the former Team Manager position in the homes. Our vision is that Frontline Leaders will support and develop the team of DSPs so that the team’s success depends on the entire team and decisions are made where the services are delivered: in the homes. Directors will be guides, mentors, and supporters of the Frontline Leaders. Front Line leaders will work with DSPs to challenge, energize, and en-gage all so that the very best person-centered services are delivered. Front Line Leaders will be involved in a credentialing program over the next six months to a year to develop new skills and challenge them to develop the teams. This will include assessing team member’s strengths, delegating the responsibilities and ensuring that team members are matched with their skill levels and interests in their jobs. As we move through these changes there may be some questions about who do we go to for what? Who’s responsible for what? If you have questions regarding the breakdown of the homes and the super-vision you can contact [email protected] and she will send you an updated chart of the homes. We hope to make some cultural shifts by these changes in Residential Services. Some of the why’s include: creating and leading a purpose-focused work force, increasing resource and brain power by engag-ing the entire team and finding their strengths to solve problems, focusing on retention efforts with DSP’s, and flattening the organization chart to put the decision making responsibility at the “home team” level. We will share unfolding plans in future newsletters. In the meantime, if you have questions regarding the changes please contact Alison Coyle, Tara Blasius, or Laura Gibson.

Hats off to Sitka staffThe following was received from Kent & Marty Wells in honor of Becky Trainer Carlson and the rest of the staff at Sitka. Mr. & Mrs. Wells nominated the Sitka staff for Power of B recognition.

It happened again last weekend. We had spent the day with our daughter, Abbi. We’d had breakfast out, run some errands, spent time at home getting packages ready to mail, and watched some favorite TV shows together. We finished up our day with church. Then we pulled into the parking lot at Sitka, and Abbi excitedly announced who was working that evening. Every time we bring her back to Sitka, she is excited to be home and to spend time with the staff and residents there. This month marked 12 years at Sitka, and the best years of all are the ones she’s had with Becky Trainer-Carlson and the staff she’s built. We’ve never seen Abbi happier or better cared for. The staff works hard to be compassionate and welcoming and supportive to all the Sitka residents. We kept Abbi at home as long as we could. She was able to stay home while her grandparents were living next door and got to spend every afternoon visiting with them. But after she was 25 years old, we felt she deserved the opportunity to build her own life. Black Hills Works provided the door to that new life. Though she lived for a while in one of the other group homes, it was Sitka that has been the perfect fit. These twelve years with many of the same friends have been wonderful for her. But since Becky came to lead the team at Sitka, life has been even better. The staff Becky has brought together has helped Abbi have a full life. There have been makeup and hair nights, “Girls’ Nights,” complete with manicures, whirlpools, camp-ing weekends that included Old Tyme photos, and lots of fun playing games and watching movies with the staff. They’ve even helped collect and create costumes for Halloween festivities. The staff has such a positive attitude and works hard to know the unique personalities of each resident. They learn the quirks and talents of each resident and have created a clean, bright, homelike atmosphere for the “family” of Sitka. Each resident gets to enjoy some of their favorite foods and spend their time pursuing their favorite hobbies. They’ve even become “work-out buddies” to help residents become stronger and healthier. As we look ahead and wonder what life will

bring for Abbi, we’re grateful for the staff at Sitka. We hope she has many more years with these wonderful people. We hope the other residents also get to stay in the home that has been made for them by the special people from Black Hills Works for a long, long time. This Christmas, we thank God for Becky and the com-mitted, capable staff she has assembled at Sitka.

Foundation Focus: All for one and one for all!As Black Hills Works continues to grow and provide more new, exciting opportunities to those we support, our marketing efforts are evolving to keep pace with the changes as well as promote all the new entities. Foundation staff are responsible for marketing all of the activities of Black Hills Works from admis-sions to our various social enterprises to the search for new employees. And one thing we know for sure is that the success of one entity benefits the others, and vice versa. When a potential customer or donor real-izes that a division they are unfamiliar with, for exam-ple, EchoWorks or BakeWorks, is actually associated with the same company as another division they are very familiar with, say the Suzie Cappa Art Center or a custodial team that cleans in their business, they are much more likely to support the unfamiliar entity as well. That’s why we have made an effort to standard-ize logos and colors and use similar tag lines through-out. For example, you’ll see the phrase, “The family of Black Hills Works” on the marketing materials for all of our entities. While we strive to promote the unique qualities that each division offers to the community, we also want each division to benefit from the good-will the agency as a whole has earned over many years of service to our community.

WHEN: Wednesday Morning, 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. January 4th – April 26th. NO class on Wednesday, Jan 25th or March 1st. WHERE: The Flutter Production Rehearsal studios at BHW 3603 Range Road ENROLL: Enroll online through the BHW Learning Institute CLASS DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Modern Dance and Improvisation Dancers will learn a blend of modern dance basics incorporating Laban and Bartenieff Fundmentals. Students will not only experience the benefits of physical exercise in a group setting, but will also be invited to express themselves artistically through movement with guided improvisation activities in a positive environment. This is a great way to

get moving, explore creativity, work on turning and developing balance and motor skills, as well as build a stronger skill set for upcoming Flutter Productions productions. Instructor Bio: Sara Olivier comes to us from Academy of Dance Arts and is a teaching artist and choreographer who loves collaborating and connecting with people through movement. She recently choreographed Flutter Productions: OSITY. She teaches modern dance and early childhood classes at the Academy of Dance Arts and directs the student company, Ekphrasis. A graduate of SDSU with a Master's in English, dance minor and teaching certification, Sara was faculty at Expanding Harmony Dance Studio in Brookings, SD, where she also studied for 18 years. While living and studying in Brookings she performed and choreographed for Expanding Harmony Dance Company and performed with Exaltation!, State University Theatre, and Prairie Repertory Theatre. She has trained at New Mexico State University's Dance Department and has taken master classes and intensives from notable companies and leaders in modern dance including Bill Evans, Taylor 2, MOMIX, and Pilobolus. In addition to teaching, her endeavors include partnering with local organizations and artists, having worked with community theatres, Lifeways, Rapid City Area Schools, the YMCA, Black Hills Symphony and Orchestra, the HOPE center, Main Street Square, and Rapid City Public Libraries. Her choreography credits include collegiate presentations, work commissioned by SDSU for Feminine Images: A Harvey Dunn Project, and other grant-awarded projects. She is also currently facilitating and choreographing for Echoing Passages, a collaborative of South Dakota artists creating public performance art inspired by Masayuki Nagase's The Sculpture Project: Passage of Wind and Water. Sara lives in Rapid City with her husband, Austin, and six-year-old son, Henry.
