Acknowledgements The Agricultural Science Careers Committee would like to thank everybody who generously helped in the preparation for Careers Day 2016.

In particular we would like to thank the Dean of Agriculture Professor Alex Evans; Dr Eileen Gibney; Damien Dempsey; Tara Walsh and all the staff from the School of Agriculture and Food Science Programme Office; Iris Burke; Catherine Byrne; Karen Holland; Annette Patchett and Irene Rose.

We would like to acknowledge the companies who have given sponsorship and donations to the committee, a special mention to FRS who sponsored this year’s Graduate Booklet. We would like to thank all the companies who attended on the day, without whom, Careers Day 2016 would not be possible.

Foreword from Chairperson It is a privilege to welcome my fellow fourth year students and potential employers to our annual Careers Day in the UCD Student Centre Complex. Each year this event continues to grow from strength to strength and it proves to be extremely successful for both employers and students. This event is unique within UCD where students take it upon themselves to organise their own careers event which shows initiative, leadership and organisational skills.

The Agri-food sector continues to grow and with the abolition of milk quotas in 2015, this is an exciting time for graduates and the Careers Day has a significant role to play for the graduates of 2016. It provides them with an opportunity to showcase all the skills and talents which they have acquired throughout their four years of study.

Careers Day also provides an excellent opportunity for all companies present here today to handpick suitable future graduates for their business. I can assure you that the students here today are at the forefront of modern technology. The skills developed by these graduates over the past four years with the aid of their lecturers, make them the ideal candidates to embark on long and successful careers in the exciting Agri-food sector.

The Graduate Handbook provides a brief synopsis of the Class of 2016 and it serves as an invaluable reference to companies who wish to recruit staff.

As Careers Chairperson, I on behalf of the Careers Committee would like to thank all who contributed in any way to the success of today especially Farm Relief Services who sponsored this Graduate Booklet. I would especially like to thank Mr Bill Callanan, Chief Inspector, Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine who has taken time out of his busy schedule to be here and speak to us. I would also like to thank Dean of Agriculture Professor Alex Evans and President of the ASA, Mr. Neil Keane for attending Careers Day. Mr. Damien Dempsey and Ms. Tara Walsh deserve a special thanks for without their continued support and assistance in the last number of months, today would have not been possible. Their advice and guidance throughout the year has helped to ensure today was a success. I would also like to thank all the staff of the School of Agriculture and Food Science Programme Office. I would like to thank the Careers Committee for their hard work and tremendous effort in preparing for today.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow students every success and happiness in the future. It has been a pleasure and a great experience to hold the position of Agricultural Science Careers Chairperson for 2015/16 and I will always remember it.

Foreword from the Dean of AgricultureOnce again it is that time of year when we welcome many employers of our graduates and the final year students themselves to the annual Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Day and it is my pleasure to write this short note for the Graduate Handbook. This publication and this event is well established in the UCD calendar and is testament to the enthusiasm and commitment that both students and employers have to the agriculture and food industries in Ireland and further afield. The Careers Day is a forum where employers and students come together to learn about each other and exchange information on skills and opportunities. The booklet presents a short profile and the contact details of each student and will be an invaluable resource in the months ahead.

Agriculture and food businesses, and all their associated industries, continue to be highly regarded in Ireland and make significant contributions to our economy and our society. While progress is impressive, many challenges face those in the industry all along the value chain. This is where the UCD graduates, with their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm, have an opportunity to make a difference and develop strong and rewarding careers to shape all of our futures. UCD offers the widest and most complete set of programmes in agriculture, food and nutrition and, in the eyes of many, produces the countries best graduates. Congratulations to the Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Committee and its chairperson Amie Coonan, for producing this publication and organising another significant event in the UCD calendar. I also thank the employers who give freely of their time and expertise to make the Careers Day a success. I hope our final year students will make the best of the many opportunities that will come their way, and encourage them to make the biggest impact possible, to continue learning and also to engage with what they enjoy.

Darragh FaddenPhone: 085 2295899 E-mail: [email protected] I am an honest, reliable and hardworking individual with good communication skills, who enjoys both working in a team and on my own initiative. I have studied forestry in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) for three years, and a further two years in University College Dublin (UCD). I have worked in Killarney National Park as part of work experience in WIT, where I helped with; the eradication of rhododendron from infested areas, deer culling, and wildlife surveys. I have also worked for the Icelandic Forest Service in Iceland for a period of time and I was awarded a Certificate of Excellency from UCD based on my report and the work that I carried out there. This work included tasks such as selective thinning, planting, chipping, creating walking paths and recording inventory data for Iceland’s National Forest Inventory. I have a strong interest in wildlife and the environment, and I am also competent with ArcGIS, have a full driving licence and qualified in both chainsaw operations up to CS32 (felling of large trees) and chemical spraying.

Cathal GleesonScreggan, Tullamore Co. OffalyPhone: 089 2138758 E-mail: [email protected] am an honest, reliable and hardworking individual who has experience with chainsaws and general outside work. Outside work is my passion. I am a good team person but also am capable of working well when alone. I believe that hard work goes a long way and says a lot about who you are as a person. I would consider myself very tasty with a chainsaw and also a very good machinery and trailer driver as I come from a farming background. `I received good feedback from my PWE with Skogarekt Rikisins, the Icelandic forest service and I plan on getting all the chainsaw licenses by training with KTC training in Abbeyleix in the near future.

James KearinsFallathurteen Dromard Co.SligoPhone: 0872605571 E-mail: [email protected] pursuing my honours degree in forestry, I have gained valuable experience in the forestry sector. During my PWE with Teagasc I developed a strong knowledge of forestry research and its application in the forestry industry. Growing up on a beef and sheep farm has provided me with a good understanding of the agriculture sector. I am prepared to take on new challenges and learn new skills.

Patrick Martin57 Bryansglen Park, Bangor, Co. Down, BT20 3RSMobile: 00 44 7710813307 Email: [email protected][email protected] ambition is to have a lifelong career in forestry and have started to fulfil this aim with my degree at UCD. During this time I took the opportunity to study abroad at Michigan State University during my third year and went on to carry out my work placement in California, working for UC Berkeley as field crew in their research station. I feel that this experience has added considerably to my ability to work independently and take on added responsibility and has also shown me the importance of networking.

Jason MeenaghanTallagh road, Belmullet, Co. MayoPhone: 083 4815667 E-mail: [email protected] am dependable, conscientious, organized individual and pride myself on my efficiency. I am acutely aware of the need for order and precision in every work environment and am capable of applying myself to any situation. I have a strong work ethic which includes a ‘hands-on’ approach and I excel particularly well in dealing with practicalities. This, along with my organizational and leadership skills allows me to be balanced in my work and feel fulfilled and motivated. I gained valuable experience having studied abroad at Michigan State University, and received a scholarship to help carry out my work experience with University California Berkeley at their research station in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Having taken Mandarin Chinese as my minor I believe this will also be of benefit in a professional capacity in working with emerging markets.
