Gothenburg’s city administration is led by an elected mayor and four city council members. A professional administrator employed by the city manages the day-to-day operations. The city council meets bimonthly. Bringing testimony to the City’s enterprising track record are a long list of projects including: computerization in city offices; automated electric load management reducing electric rates; major expansion of the Carnegie Library; nearly 100% success in applying for CDBG funds; an innovative neighborhood revitalization program; railroad overpass; new/existing streets, roads and state highways under
resurfacing/widening; waste treatment plant, community child care center.
Gothenburg Senior CenterOriginally built in 1983 at a cost of $125,000. The money to build it initially was raised in nine days coming from local contributors. They recently finished a $300,000 expansion/renovation. Monday through Friday they serve congregate meals at Noon, provide meals-on-wheels to shut-ins and offer activities for the senior residents of Gothenburg.
Building Blocks Child CareIn 1992 following the recruitment of Baldwin Filters
the City recognized a need for additional child care due to the fact that many of the employees at Baldwin were women. The child care center is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays taking children from 6 weeks to 13 years of age. They are able to handle 88 children furnishing two meals plus one snack.
School age children are walked to and from school due to the close proximity to the school.
Gothenburg Public Library:With the help from a $7,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation, the Gothenburg Carnegie Library was built in 1917. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it offers a unique architectural style. In 1999 a 6,000 square foot addition was added at a cost of $1.2 million funded entirely by private donations. The library offers a computer
lab, study rooms, children’s library with computer lab and a community room. During the school year over 100 pre-school children (3-4-5 year olds) are enrolled in Story Hour; during the summer months around 170 kids (kindergarten through 6th grade) will attend Reading Club.
Volunteer Fire DepartmentThe fire department has a 44-person squad of all-volunteer firemen. The six-bay facility is large for a city of our size. The average time lapse from the moment a fire/emergency call is paged to when the first unit is enroute is 2.3 minutes. Volunteers attempt to qualify as Emergency Medical Technicians within three years of joining.
Gothenburg Airport The airport, at an elevation of 2,555 feet, provides two instrument approach runways and a fuel station. Overnight hanger space is available.
CITY SERVICES 7
In the latter part of the year 1882, Olof Bergstrom, a worker with the Union Pacific Railroad conceived the idea that a town was needed where Gothenburg now stands. The town is situated in the wonderful Platte River Valley, which is probably the greatest agricultural valley in the world. Bergstrom chose a farmstead north of the town site and traveled back to Sweden to convince his fellow countrymen to migrate to the United States
– to Nebraska – to build a new town in the West. He was most persuasive and by July 8, 1885, Gothenburg, with a population of 300, was incorporated as a town. Swedes and Germans settled the area, as is evidenced by the name Gothenburg. The town was named for Goteborg, Sweden, but was given a German spelling by railroad officials. The digging of a 12 mile canal from the Platte River and construction of the first man-made lake designed to
generate electricity encouraged several industries and factories to locate here. Companies included shirt and overall factories, brick kilns, bathtub and ironworks factories, flour mills, vinegar and pickles works, a cigar manufacturer as well as a barbed wire factory. Boom
days came early in the 1890’s. Gothenburg was destined to be the “little Chicago” of Nebraska. The money panic of 1893 turned the boom to bust. However, the canal provided the first irrigation system for about 17,000 acres east of the lake and agriculture quickly settled in as the main industry for the growing community. The
man-made lake spurred industrial, community and agricultural growth, a hallmark of Gothenburg’s success throughout its history. By 1892 Gothenburg residents had electricity – the first, in western Nebraska. Community volunteers cleared land, planted trees and erected buildings to develop a park area adjacent to the lake in the early 1900’s calling it Lafayette Park. With the help of many
organizations and citizens the lake and park represent the ingenuity and tenacity of our volunteers. Lake Helen’s impact on Gothenburg’s early industrial history and on its agricultural and recreational development over more than a century ago made it the community’s choice for submitting it as Project of the Century to the Nebraska Community Improvement Program. Gothenburg was named Community of the Century in 2000 and Lake Helen received the acclaim of being named Project of the Century also. Gothenburg’s founder literally led Swedish immigrants to his proposed town site and asked them to make his vision a reality. Many families in the community
today can point to a specific person in the family tree who provided leadership to Gothenburg during its development over the years. A former mayor once stated, “We don’t do things for personal gain, we do things so that the community gains.” We continue to have a vision for our future to make Gothenburg a place where people want to Live, Work and Play.

HEALTHCARE 9
People in Gothenburg enjoy all the benefits a small town has to offer. That includes a variety of sports, as well as outdoor and leisure activities. Parks along the beautiful tree-lined Lake Avenue offer a popular place for family gatherings and community festivals. History buffs can find a wealth of information at the Pony Express Station and the Gothenburg Historical Museum. Historic homes grace the streetscape offering a picture of various architectural styles. Recreation opportunities abound. Whether its tennis, volleyball, baseball, swimming, water sports, hunting or fishing, you can find it in Gothenburg. White tailed and mule deer and elk can be found along with pheasants, wild turkeys, doves, quail, ducks and geese. Water sports are popular with tubing and canoeing on the Platte River. On Jeffrey, Midway and Johnson Lakes, each only 20 minutes from Gothenburg, sailing, power boating, water skiing and fishing fill summer days with fun. Amateur or pro, you can golf at a nationally ranked 18-hole public course, Wild Horse Golf Club. Cowboy hats and boots are also a regular sight at the annual July Rodeo and on
summer weekends. Park your horse, your car or your RV. Stay for a day, a week or for as long as you like. Our door is always open and the welcome sign is out.
Pony Express StationsGothenburg is home to two Pony Express Stations. The Midway, on its original ranch site south of Gothenburg, is open to the public on request during the summer. The Sam Machette Station, located in Ehmen Park at 15th and Lake Avenue, was used as an early trading post/ranch house, just southwest of Gothenburg near Fort MacPherson. The station was moved from its original site and rebuilt in the park in 1931 to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. This station, opened in 1954 to visitors, continues to welcome them April 1 through October 31. A guide is on staff to tell the story of the brave riders who carried the mail 2000 miles between St. Joseph, MO and Sacramento, CA from May 1860 to October 1861. In
August 1992 the Nebraska Legislature designated Gothenburg as Pony Express Capital of Nebraska after almost 40 years of promoting the
history of the Pony Express.
Gothenburg Historical MuseumLocated across the street from the Pony Express Station museum, the historical museum offers interesting displays of the Union Pacific as it expanded westward; the power plant constructed in 1891 to generate electricity for new industry and settlement of the town; German and Swedish settlers as they brought their businesses and families to live in a new fledgling community. It offers a chance to glimpse the colorful times of long ago. Tthe museum is open May through September.
Swedish CrossesFor over a century, the three markers in the Swedish Crosses Cemetery have stood as a lasting symbol of Gothenburg’s Swedish heritage. These unusual and artistic grave markers, wrought in Swedish steel by a loving grandfather, denote the graves of three children on a prairie homestead that is now part of pioneer history.
Lake HelenLake Helen was created in the early 1890s when a 10-mile canal was dug to allow water from the Platte River to fill a dammed canyon and create a reservoir. Originally, the area supported an electricity plant, which brought industry (such as a brass foundry, flour mills, shirt factories, barbed wire factories, vinegar works and a brick kiln) to the area. Unfortunately, the money panic of 1893 ended the boom days, leaving a large lake, a powerhouse and a downtown of substantial brick buildings. The lake was used to provide water for irrigation to a community that would rely on its area agriculture to sustain it. In 2014, Lake Helen was drained and renovated. Today, the lake provides a scenic recreation area excellent for fishing and features a 2.5-mile exercise trail.
Sun Theatre The Sun Theatre in Gothenburg was built and used as an opera house from 1909 until 1926. Back in 1927, children could enjoy a silent movie accompanied by an orchestra for 10 cents (adults had to pay 20 cents). The Community Playhouse, a non-profit organization formed 45 years ago in 1968, purchased the Sun Theatre in 1983 following a successful fund drive to “save the
10 ATTRACTIONS
Sun”. Since then they have offered both live productions and cinema entertainment. The continuous effort to upgrade the theatre has been supported by many. Their efforts have included the neon lights on the new façade, a remodeled concession area, and most recently the installation of the digital projection system complete with a 7.1 Dolby surround sound system, new stage curtains, acoustical wall curtains, a remodeled stage front and a new ultra bright
cinema screen. Before the dust cleared on all the above, they started on their latest project and ordered and installed 260 new, more comfortable seats. Being the only theater in the county brings movie-goers from a wide area. The best part is its affordability and you’re greeted by a smiling, friendly volunteer.
Wild Horse Golf CourseResidents and visitors who like to relax and enjoy
golf choose to play at the public 18-hole Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg. Opened in 1999, it is a links course bordered by thick native grasses. The fairways are wide, but lots of virgin sand hill sand traps help to increase your handicap. Golf Digest rated this public course third in the nation on its list of best affordable new courses in 1999. In 2004,
Golf Week magazine ranked Wild Horse the 19th best modern course (any course built after 1960) in the nation and in 2007 it was the #1 U.S. course under $50, said Golf Magazine. Each year it receives acclaim from golf reviewers and enthusiasts from around the world.
Sod House MuseumThis memorial to the first settlers in the area features a barn, sod house, windmills and life-sized barbed wire sculptures. Located behind the barn, which is filled with memorabilia and photographs, the sod house is a replica of the early homes with sparse interior reflecting the hard times faced by pioneer families.

Well preserved Victorians, compact bungalows, contemporary ranch style houses and stately two-story homes are graciously mixed and blended throughout Gothenburg’s residential areas. Gothenburg – a city for families and people looking for a home.
Purchasing an Existing HomeMost homes close to the downtown district and along Lake Avenue (one of the most beautiful “Main Streets” in America) are 70+ years old. The growth in Gothenburg has been to the north and northeast. New homes are also being built at Wild Horse Golf Club (north and west of town). Homes there will occasionally be available. Prices range from $20,000 to
$350,000 although most are priced $50,000 to $200,000. They vary in age from new to 100+ years. Realtors listed in the directory can be contacted.
Building New HomesA number of vacant lots are available around the community and are priced between $15-30,000. A tract of land in the northeast part of town has recently been developed with infrastructure in place. Lots range from
$25,000 to $35,000. Six spec homes were started on vacant lots owned by the Redevelopment Authority in 2015. To date two have been completed and sold. The remaining four are in varying states of construction with two nearing completion. Four of the six spec homes had buyers verbally agree to purchase before construction
was completed. Lots at Wild Horse Golf Club are available for $20-40,000. For those interested in “loft-style” living in a downtown environment, two-story buildings downtown are sometimes available for sale which would be suitable for renovating into single-family homes.

Lake Helen gave Gothenburg its lifeblood with the construction of a powerhouse and water wheel for electricity and irrigation as well as the industrial use that followed its creation. Although Gothenburg was not meant to become a large industrial metropolis, it began the trip down the road to what we’ve become today. That lifeline has branched out into value-added agricultural industries that have flourished. In 1986, local citizens passed a 1/2 cent sales tax for economic development which has been captured to attract new business and industry and expand existing business and industry. The funding source helped create over 500 jobs. This citizen action provides Gothenburg with a funding mechanism that can be leveraged many times over. The impact of this action on the economic well-being of the community will be felt for years to come. The recruitment of the Frito-Lay corn gathering facility and the Monsanto Water Utilization Learning Center and Seed Research, in addition to manufacturers like Baldwin Filters and Parker Tech Seals has put Gothenburg in another industrial boom period.Farming, ranching, manufacturing, retail sales
and tourism are the primary economic activities of the area. By virtue of its location in the Platte River Valley, agriculture is the major economic factor for the communities in the county. With the benefit of irrigation it is not uncommon for the area to produce eight tons of alfalfa or 225 bushels of corn or 76 bushels of soybeans per acre.Major manufacturers and industries in Gothenburg include:

and the other in Gothenburg, Nebraska. If you eat a corn chip or Dorito chip west of the Mississippi, it more than likely was produced by an area farmer and came from Gothenburg’s Frito Lay.
MonsantoIn 2008 Monsanto announced they were building a $6 million learning facility and corn breeding station here in Gothenburg. The 324 acre research farm enables the center to put its focus on technologies, corn breeding and agronomic practices to address water management in crop
production. Over 4,000 growers, crop consultants, water policy makers, trade groups, politicians, media, local youth and investors have visited the center coming from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Finland, Spain, India, Australia, Japan, Israel,
Sri Lanka, Switzerland, South Africa, Philippines, Kenya and China.

Gothenburg residents have a history of going the extra mile to assure that our community remains a topnotch community for both economy and community.
GIC- Gothenburg Improvement CompanyThe Gothenburg Improvement Company was established in 1961 beginning an organized effort to recruit businesses and people to our community. GIC plays a vital role in securing the future of Gothenburg. This volunteer organization depends on the continued dedication of its stockholders and their willingness to freely give of their time, talents and financial resources. Their primary goal is to improve and preserve the quality of life that makes Gothenburg the place we all call home.
LOL- Livin’ Out LoudLivin’ Out Loud was created out of a vision from Gothenburg community members who asked “why not?”. If folks can close off streets for a block party, why can’t we close off streets to glorify Christ? In 2013, the first community-wide event took place in downtown Gothenburg with over 450 attendees. From there
the vision grew to include worship bands and speakers all in the name of the One Who Saves. In August 2013, Livin’ Out Loud put on the first community-wide outdoor free concert featuring Tenth Avenue North and had over 3,500 attendees. Livin’ Out Loud’s focus is to help unify the body of Christ, in corporate praise, and
outreach to those who have not heard the Gospel
The CenterThe Center is a collaborative
vision that includes community, education, recreation & wellness. The Center is an opportunity to unify our community even further. It will provide space for educational opportunities, a gathering space for groups and individuals of all ages and socio-economic status, and will take a holistic approach to prevention and
wellness.
Sun Theatre The Community Playhouse, a non-profit organization purchased the Sun Theatre in 1983 following a successful fund drive to “save the Sun”. The continuous effort to upgrade the theatre has been supported by many.
Their efforts have included the neon lights on the new façade, a remodeled concession area, and most recently the installation of the digital projection system
complete with a 7.1 Dolby surround sound system, new stage curtains, acoustical wall curtains, a remodeled stage front, a new cinema screen & replacing the old seats with 260 new, more comfortable seats. Each weekend, community volunteers take turns to run the theatre.
The Backpack ProgramThe Backpack program launched in Nebraska & Iowa in 2006, it helps families that are struggling to make ends meet. The fact that one in five kids in Nebraska are at risk for hunger is what prompted a couple from Gothenburg to begin the program here. Back packs are filled at the American Lutheran Church with non-perishable goods and sent with elementary aged children whose families have signed up for the program. Currently, there are 30-35 families utilizing the program each week. This program is entirely run by volunteers and donations.
