One of the world's leading institutes for research and programs on South Asia, the Institute for South Asia Studies (ISAS) at the University of California, Berkeley works with faculty

members, graduate students, community members, private institutions, and non-profit organizations to deepen understanding of the region and to create new generations of scholars of South Asia.

ISAS actively:

• Supports teaching and research activities of South Asia-related faculty and their students

• Initiates and administers research projects

• Organizes and hosts lectures, colloquia, seminars, and research conferences

• Develops financial resources for the enhancement of South Asia studies

• Encourages interdisciplinary, regional, and comparative studies of South Asia

• Creates outreach programs in coordination with other institutions of primary, secondary, and post-secondary education

Dear Fulbright Scholar,

Welcome to the 2016 Fulbright Re-entry & Social Enterprise Seminar at the University of

California, Berkeley. We look forward to a four days of stimulating conversation and dialogue.

The seminar will be held in the Junior Ballroom, on the second floor of the Oakland Marriott City Center (1001 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94607. Tel: (510) 451-4000), a modern downtown hotel, conveniently located within a 3-minute walk from the 12th St. Oakland City Center BART station. You will also be staying in this hotel.

• If you are checked in by 5 pm on Wednesday, April 27, please go to the Junior Ballroom for registration followed by welcome addresses and dinner.

• The seminar will begin at 9 am on Thursday, April 28 in the Junior Ballroom.

• Please make sure to have your name badge (that you received when you checked

in) and your agenda (that you received at registration) with you throughout the conference!

• Your hotel reservation comes with complimentary breakfast for the duration of your

stay. Breakfast on all days will be from 7 am to 8:30 am in the Junior Ballroom.

• Please note that the closing dinner on Saturday, April 29 will be held in the Skyline

Room at 6:30pm• Please also note that your room rental is covered by us. However anything over that,

such as in-room movies, long distance telephone charges, room service, WiFi, laundry, etc. will have to be paid by you.

S P E A K E R B I O SAjay RaoPakistan Desk Officer, Public Diplomacy, Bureau of South and

Central Asian Affairs

Ajay Rao is the Pakistan Desk Officer for Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Ajay is in the Foreign Service and has previously served as staff assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemi-sphere Affairs and as consular officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, India. He graduated from Mills College with an M.F.A. in English and Creative Writing in 2005 and from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in English in 2000. He is married; both his wife and he are huge pet lovers and have two cats, one from India and one from South Korea.

Ali Zahoor MalikProgram Office, U.S. Educational Foundation in Pakistan

Mr. Ali Zahoor Malik is a Program Officer at the United States Educational Foun-dation in Pakistan (USEFP). Ali joined the USEFP in 2010 as an Assistant Program Officer where he administered various programs including the Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Comparative Public Policy, Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Women Leaders and Global Undergraduate Exchange program. Currently he is administrating Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Pakistan program, Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program and the Foreign Fulbright degree program. He completed his MBA from School of Business and Commerce, Pakistan. Mr. Ali has over 12 years of experience including working for Banking, Telecom and the Oil and Gas sectors.

Amra TareenPresident, OPEN, Silicon Valley

Amra Tareen is a Technology Evangelist & Commercialization Expert. She is currently the President of OPEN, Silicon Valley. She co-founded LittleCast and was the CEO until March 2015. Previously Amra was the founder and CEO of allvoices.com, a global people’s media company where anyone can report news or their story from anywhere in the world via cell phone or PC. Prior to Allvoices, Amra was a partner at the venture capital firm, Sevin Rosen Funds. Amra has an MBA from Harvard Univer-sity and a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of New South Wales, Australia.

Asim FayazMasters of Development Practice Candidate, UC Berkeley

Asim is a second-year Masters of Development Practice candidate at UC Berke-ley and holds a BS in Computer Science from LUMS. Prior to graduate school, he founded the Technology for People Initiative, a Google and UKAid-funded technolo-gy and design startup, worked for the World Bank in Pakistan on tech-enabled gov-ernance reform, which included the USD 50M Punjab Public Management Reform Program, and organized TEDxLahore. Bassim Abbassi is Assistant Director for Enrichment Programs at IIE. He coordinates the planning and administration of Fulbright enrichment seminars and Gateway programs. Prior to joining IIE in 2005, Mr. Abbassi worked as a Program Integrity As-surance, Reviewer for the Federal Communications Commission’s Universal Service Fund, Schools and Libraries Program. The Schools and Libraries Program is intend-ed to ensure that schools and libraries have access to affordable telecommunica-tions and information services. Mr. Abbassi worked in the Civil Rights department at the Council on American-Islamic Relations New York Chapter. In 2002 he attended the United Nations Special Session: A World Fit For Children as an NGO represen-tative. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Rutgers University in New Jersey, and holds a Professional Certificate in Global Affairs from New York University. Chad SterbenzRisk Director, Kiva

As Risk Director, Chad is responsible for facilitating the management of risk across Kiva’s portfolio of diverse field partners in support of Kiva’s mission. Chad joined Kiva in 2013 after having worked since 2007 at SEAF, a non-profit investment man-agement group with a focus on impact investing, where he developed and applied diverse portfolio and risk management tools and processes, and where he was responsible for the management of direct equity and debt investments in small busi-nesses in Vietnam and Peru. Chad has been passionate about the study and prac-tice of innovative methods to promote economic development and alleviate poverty

since his service in the US Peace Corps in Kyrgyzstan, where he taught social stud-ies, economics, and writing courses at a local technical university. Chad holds an MA in International Development from American University in Washington, DC, and a BA in Anthropology and Classical Archaeology from Bowdoin College in Maine. A native of New York, David J. Ranz is a member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor. A career diplomat since 1992 focused on the Arab world, Mr. Ranz is currently Director of the Office of Pakistan Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Ranz previously served as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, and Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt; and as Spokesman and Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Mr. Ranz has also served in Rabat, Morocco; Jerusalem; Karachi, Pakistan; and Washington, D.C.; and has participated on U.S. delegations to numerous inter-national conferences and negotiations, including the Wye River (Israeli-Palestinian) and Shepherdstown (Israeli-Syrian) peace talks. In 2004, Mr. Ranz was awarded the State Department’s Herbert Salzman Award for International Economic Performance in recognition of “his vital work pursuing structural reform of the Palestinian Author-ity (PA) with active, on the ground diplomacy involving international and Palestinian officials, his timely and insightful reporting, and his excellent policy advice.” In 2013, Mr. Ranz was selected as the runner-up for the State Department’s James Clement Dunn Award for “the sustained excellence of his performance as Political Counselor in Cairo.” Mr. Ranz has also received four U.S. Department of State Superior Honor Awards (1994, 2000, 2002, and 2011), a U.S. Department of the Army Command-er’s Award for Public Service from General (ret.) David Petraeus (2007), and one Meritorious Honor Award (2010), and is a member of national Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Ranz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Yale University in 1991 and a Masters in Public Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 2005. He was the founding executive director of the Blum Center for Developing Economies after having held leadership positions in the international NGOs World Links, VITA and Pact. Munis D. Faruqui is a historian and Associate Professor in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies. He focuses on the Muslim experience in South Asia, especially during the Mughal period. His books include Princes of the Mughal Em-pire, 1504-1719 (Cambridge, 2012), Expanding Frontiers in South Asian and World History (co-edited with Richard Eaton, David Gilmartin and Sunil Kumar)(Cambridge, 2013), and Religious Interactions in Mughal India (co-edited with Vasudha Dalmia)(Oxford, 2014). His various journal articles have interrogated the relationship be-tween religion and politics in the life and work of the Mughal prince, Dara Shukoh (1615-59), the founding decades (c. 1720-40) of the princely state of Hyderabad, and the creation of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). He is currently working on a book about the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707). In 2014, Dr. Faruqui was one of three recipients of UC-Berkeley’s most prestigious honor for teaching, the Distinguished Teaching Award. The award recognizes teach-ing that “incites intellectual curiosity in students, engages them thoroughly in the enterprise of learning, and has a lifelong impact.” Dr. Faruqui also is the co-chair (along with Dr. Saba Mahmood) of two campus initiatives: Berkeley Urdu Initiative and Berkeley Pakistan Initiative.

As a corporate consultant, Richard specialized in the areas of retention, motivation, time management, goal setting, and developing total health productivity in the workplace. Mr. Martinez holds an MBA with an emphasis in en-trepreneurship from the University of San Francisco and a Masters in Sports Man-agement also from USF. Saleem RazaqueProgram Manager, U.S. Educational Foundation in Pakistan

A graduate of Government College Lahore and Punjab University, with majors in American and European History, Saleem has more than 25 years of development sector experience in various US agencies and corporate sector mostly related to administering the USAID funded scholarship programs. He also holds an Extensive Certificate Course of American History from United States Information Services. Prior to re-joining USEFP in 2010, he was working as Director Participant Training in Pre-Service Teacher Education Program in Pakistan (Pre-STEP) – A USAID funded program. There, he was responsible for setting up a new participant training unit from the scratch and designing the application, making and implementing the poli-cies and regulations of the recruitment process. He was also responsible for devel-opment and implementation of participant training program activities for Pre-STEP Pakistan and assisting the Deputy/Chief of party to ensure that activities are imple-mented according to the program objectives. He has also served USEFP for about five years in the past, initially as Assistant Program Officer and then as Program Officer. Well-traveled around the globe, he has also worked in corporate sector in the areas of Human Resource Development. Since 2010 when he became the Program Manager of the World’s largest Fulbright Program the number of grantees has also significantly increased to more than double for other USEFP administered programs.

Sanchita Saxena, Executive Director, Institute for South Asia

Dr. Sanchita Saxena is an administrator, author, researcher, consultant, and lecturer with a focus on international development and policy making. Dr. Saxena received her Ph.D. in Political Science (focus on Comparative Political Economy) from UCLA in 2002. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of the Institute for South Asia Studies (ISAS) at UC Berkeley where she is responsible for spearheading new research initiatives, managing multi-year grants (from the Department of Education, Department of State, and Obama-Singh Knowledge Initiative), developing program-matic activities, securing funding opportunities through grants, individual, and cor-porate donors, establishing internal and external partnerships, administering fellow-ships, disseminating research through articles and reports, overseeing the Institute’s long term strategy, and providing the administrative leadership for the day-to-day operations of the Institute. Sudha Shetty is the Assistant Dean for International Partnerships and Alliances at the Goldman School of Public at UC Berkeley. She is responsible for developing and implementing Global Leadership Programs in partnership with Foreign Governments. Her research area is focused on International Child Abduction and the intersection

of Violence Against Women and is a PI on the grant from the Department of Justice. She has also served as the Director of the International Fellowship Program and a graduate faculty at the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs where she managed Fulbright’s, Muskie, Bolashak and Govt. of India Fellowships; developed and implemented trainings for these emerging international leaders in the areas of strategic planning, policy development, leadership devel-opment, media and communications created partnership with Hennepin County and engaged the directors and department heads as mentors for the Fellows. Mr. Khan has over 20 industry patents applied for or pending in computer design and architecture, including four from his work at Intel and one from his graduate research at MIT. As a widely renowned leader in advanced Inter-net technology and a successful entrepreneur, he has lectured at the country’s top business schools, including MIT and Harvard, and has been profiled in publications such as USA Today, New York Times, and The Entrepreneur. Mr. Khan received a BS in Mathematics (1992) and an MS in Computer Engineering (1995) from MIT, where, in 1991, he was elected Institutional Nominee by the Department of Mathematics, as one of six distinguished scholars in Mathematics.

As CEO of Habib University Foundation, Mr. Wasif Rizvi is leading the conceptual-ization, design, and management of Habib University. Under his leadership, Habib University has initiated several youth development projects from the Foundation’s platform.
