History & Cultural AwarenessNEW-The Right to a Home: The Legacy of Structural Inequality & Homeownership#6450The three-week occupation of Min-neapolis Police Department’s Fourth Precinct galvanized communities and made headlines around the world. Many scholars believe it—and other recent protests—are tied to a historical trajectory of structural racism, hous-ing discrimination, and economic inequality.

Hosted by the University of Minnesota Robert J. Jones Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, this Critical Conversation will examine the historical roots of modern-day pro-tests through an examination of Min-neapolis’s historical housing practices.

Guest speakers will include Augustine Willie Dominguez, Northside resident and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives; Edward Goetz, director of the University of Minnesota Center for Urban and Regional Affairs; Keith Mayes, profes-sor and past chair of the University’s Department of African American and African Studies; and Shauen Pearce, executive director of the Harrison Neighborhood Association. What is ECFE?ECFE understands the importance of the early years as learning years. Right from birth, parents shape the child’s development, strengthen the parent-child relationship and set the stage for future learning and growth as a family. ECFE supports families by offering a variety of classes to provide education, encourage-ment and support for both parents and young children.

The original intent of creating ECFE was grounded in research that linked the quality of the child’s development from birth to kindergarten age with later school success. That research has been proven many times over. In the last four decades, ECFE has supported parents as their child’s first teacher.

Fridley’s Early Childhood Family Education offers:• The Creative Play Center (CPC) drop in center• Infant/Toddler/Preschool • Parent/Child classes• Home Visits• Mixed age Parent/Child classes• Preschool classes• Clase en español para familias

Home Visits

Visits are scheduled for District 14 residents, at parent’s request, to provide information about Early Childhood Family Education pro-grams, or to offer parent education and support to the family in their home. Families with new babies may contact the Early Childhood Fam-ily Education program to receive a free book and helpful information delivered by a staff member.

We’re Looking for the “New Kids in Town!”

Fridley’s Early Childhood program wants to support all families with in-fants. If you have a new baby at your house, and live in the Fridley School District, we would like to add your child to our district census to make sure that you get all appropriate mail-ings as your child grows and nears school age. You could also pick up or we could deliver a free book for your new baby.

Call us today at 763-502-5122 to let us know about the new member of your family.

Early Childhood Screening

Minnesota requires every child to participate in an Early Childhood Screening prior to their entry into kindergarten in a public school. Be-tween the ages of 3 ½ and 4 years, screening can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get the necessary help before they start school. If you have a child be-tween these ages who has not been screened, you can make an appoint-ment by calling 763-502-5124. The next screening dates are listed below.
