NEW INITIATIVES, A NEW LOOK, A WHOLE NEW YEAR! CEO & Technical Director, John Madding sets the new tone for Oregon Youth Soccer for 2016 with increased numbers, and personalized service. GOAL LINES February 2016 As we embark on another year of youth soccer in the state of Oregon we have seen the game change significantly from where we were at last year’s Annual General Mee<ng. We have con<nued to posi<on the Associa<on among the leaders na<onally in terms of crea<ng an inclusive, and player-centric environment. Our theme this year is T.E.A.M. - Together Everyone Achieves More. It is with that philosophy that we enter 2016 stronger than ever, and with the tools necessary to ensure that together we can advance the beau<ful game in Oregon. We would also be remiss if we did not congratulate the Portland Timbers on their fantas<c MLS Cup victory in 2015. There is not a club in MLS with more passionate fans, more community involvement, and that is a beOer example of how the success on and off the field in conjunc<on with a partnership unlike any other with their state youth associa<on can yield tremendous results. We are honored and excited to have such a fantas<c rela<onship with the MLS Champs. (con<nued on page 10) “We are extremely excited that you are part of the ride. WELCOME TO GOAL LINES 2.0 We’ve given Goal Lines a facelift, and brought it into the 21st century. With the ever changing landscape of soccer in the US and particularly here in Oregon we felt there was no better time to upgrade Goal Lines than right now!

Until this issue you had been receiving this as a static newsletter 4 times a year. While this was certainly appreciated by some, the general consensus was that it needed to be a vehicle that was able to communicate quickly, and stay current with the changing times! So here it is…in digital magazine format!

Now Goal Lines will be a monthly magazine, and will be packed full of content that is designed for everyone! T.E.A.M. is the theme for 2016 and that means something for everyone! So whether you’re a coach, a player, an administrator, a parent, a referee, or even someone who is brand new to the soccer world, there is something that should pique your interest.

Oh, and there are a few hidden links in the magazine to keep you on your toes. Click on a few of them to open up an entry form for this month’s competition and you could win four tickets to a T2 game. Happy hunting!

WHAT’S INSIDE THIS MONTH’S ISSUE?

✓ Convention updates

✓ Grassroots coordinators

✓ Our calendar of events

✓ Our Annual General Mtg recap

WHAT’S NEW IN GOAL LINES?

Simply put, EVERYTHING!

We’ve completely redesigned Goal Lines from the ground up to ensure that you’re getting the most out of each issue.

Starting with the delivery method itself, Goal Lines has

become completely interactive and contains up-to-the minute news about what’s going on in Oregon’s soccer communities.

Like something? Click it…chances are there’s even more

to the story.

WE MADE IT EASY TO SHARE, TOO! See an article that you want to send to your team? Think there is a page that would interest the parents on your U15 girls team? How about a video clip that you know your players would love to see?

Now it’s easier than ever to share! Just click the icon up there in the top right corner of the magazine, and you can decide to share however you like! Just drag the highlighted section over to the piece you want to share, and then chose one of the pop-up options.

Share just the article that’s relevant to them, instead of the whole magazine!

NSCAA BALTIMORE CONVENTION RECAP It was another huge success in Baltimore this year as the NSCAA used the Convention

bring back the knowledge they garnered to make 2016 our best year yet.

There were some fascinating speakers, incredible lectures, and field sessions led by some of the best coaching staffs in the world.

GRASSROOTS COORDINATORS BRING LOCALIZED SERVICE We could not be more excited about this ground-breaking new initiative within OYSA. We realized that the scope of education we were able to provide in years past were limited by a single person who oversaw coaching education in the state. As the saying goes, ‘there’s only so much one person can do’ and that rang true in Oregon.

This new group of energetic coordinators give us tremendous flexibility and experience, as well as an incredible amount of LOCAL coverage for all of our clubs. Before these new positions were created, our furthest club was 339.4 miles away from our state coaching staff, now nearly every club is within 60 miles of a coordinator.

Their role is to provide, setup, administer, and teach coaching courses at your club, on your timeline, to make it as convenient as possible for you. It has never been easier to receive comprehensive coaching education from qualified instructors in our 42 years of existence.

You can see that our coverage is great, but it is not just geographic! We are extremely excited that a third of our Grassroots Coordinators are dedicated to our Latino population. Having this outreach program confirms our commitment to developing ALL coaches in Oregon, and especially the ones that we have traditionally had lesser success in bringing education courses to.

They’ll each be contributing to this magazine, too. They've got a lot of information to impart and all have their different take on coaching, and what it means to them, so watch in the coming issues of Goal Lines Magazine for their own individual articles.

As we said, you’ll be hearing from each of them in the coming months in Goal Lines, but to get your course scheduled now, simply click on their name to the right, to contact them!

MEET THE COORDINATORS All of our Grassroots Coordinators have extensive coaching background around the state of Oregon, and elsewhere so they bring unique experiences to their particular region. They range from former national youth players, international coaches, high school coaches, college coaches, Latino speaking, and even have a NWSL National Championship among their ranks.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING RECAP! The Annual General Meeting was another huge success. With our theme of T.E.A.M.

(Together Everyone Achieves More) we were able to present as much inclusive material as possible. There was something for everyone!

With the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront as our host we were able to accommodate over 160 people for the event, which was immediately followed by

the Annual Awards Luncheon, with keynote speaker, Dr. Matthew Robinson.

We did coaching courses, workshops, business meetings, a Technical Director/Head Coaches Meeting and hosted the President’s Reception. It was great to catch up with so many people from around the state that we don’t get to see on a weekly

basis. You can see those presentations HERE.

FUN FACTS 160 attendees

42 head coaches

24 Presidents

Closest club represented was under 3 miles away

Furthest club represented traveled from 339 miles away

10 awards given away

16 silent auction gifts which raised over $1000 for the Oregon Youth

Soccer Foundation

SPECIAL TOPIC COURSE: SCIENCE OF YOUTH SOCCER In addition to the Annual General Meeting, we hosted a new educational piece

designed specifically for coaches of younger soccer players from a physiological, mental, and physical load.

Ian Barker, Dr. Max Trenerry, and Dr. Matthew Hawkey all presented on different topics to the nearly 60 coaches in attendance. We also had a field session at

Buckman Field where Ian demonstrated some of the newest techniques in training the youth players.

’T.E.A.M.’ MEANS EVERYONE…REFS, TOO Referees are an incredibly important part of soccer in Oregon, and with the

appointment of David Grbavac as the Manager of Referee Development we have a greater emphasis on recruiting, retaining, and mentoring young officials in the state.

David’s role going forward will be to continue to expand on the relationship between the state association, the Oregon Referee Committee, and young referees throughout the state. He’ll be coordinating classes for new referees, both Grade 9 and 8, as well

as encouraging existing referees to continue on with their education.

In just the month of February so far, we have seen traffic driven to the Oregon Referee Committee website increase almost 600% based on the marketing and outreach that we are now doing, and we hope it continues as we truly bring the referee world into

the fold ensure that we are a T.E.A.M.

————————————

David achieved the USSF Grade 5 referee badge, and has been an assignor and a state assessor for many years. He is widely respected as one of the premier referees in

the state and we are extremely excited to have him onboard.

BY THE BOOK ✓ There are currently 985 registered

referees in the state of Oregon

✓ 456 referees were active in PDX.

✓ There were 279 referees under 19 years old in the Portland area.

✓ There were 3,605 Timbers & Thorns League games that were refereed Fall 2015

✓ Active referees averaged 5.9 games each in the Fall season

✓ There will be a projected 27,300 minutes of soccer played in the Spring for the U8-U10 Developmental League

WHISTLE STOP Times are changing in

Oregon’s soccer landscape.

Our members reached out to us and asked us to review how referees are trained, retained,

mentored, assigned and recruited.

So we’ve done just that!

This page lets all referees, from the rookies to the most

experienced, know what is going on specifically for them in their corner of the game.
