CALL FOR ENTRIES 2016

The English Olympiad is an English competition that draws over 8000

entries each year. The competition is organised jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE).

AIMS OF THE ENGLISH OLYMPIAD

To enrich learners through the study of English and to encourage critical thinking and creative writing.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE EXAMINATION? Candidates are required to prepare for a 3-hour open-book examination. Candidates may take the Anthology into the examination room, but not the Study Guide.

WHEN AND WHERE?

The 3-hour Examination will be written at your school on Tuesday, 1 March 2016. Please note the following: It is not possible, for practical and security reasons, to allow schools to write the Examination on different dates. Schools are requested to take the set date and time into account when planning their calendars for 2016. Please make sure that your Candidates will be able to write on this day. Schools may start the Examination at any time between 11h00 and 14h00 on the examination day, provided the Candidates are allowed 3 hours to write. The date of the Examination is determined by the time needed to process the results, so that the Top 15 Candidates can be invited to attend the Grahamstown National Schools Festival in July.

WHAT IS THE SYLLABUS FOR 2016? The THEME for the Olympiad will be “A journey into darkness: Excerpts from stories exploring the darker side of human nature”. The Anthology entitled The Darkness in Man’s Heart will include excerpts from well-known novels. The 2016 examination paper will consist of two sections: Section A will require Candidates to respond to and analyse the excerpts, while Section B will focus on language. A Study Guide will be posted to Candidates with the Anthology.

WHO MAY ENTER?

The competition is open to ALL learners who will be in Grades 10, 11 and 12 in 2016, that is, those learners who are currently in Grades 9 to 11.

Certificates

Candidates who enter and write the English Olympiad are eligible for a certificate indicating their exam evaluation (Participation, Merit, Bronze, Silver or Gold). Those Candidates who do not complete the paper, or whose answers are clearly insufficient, will not receive a certificate.

HOW TO ENTER? Entries are only accepted through schools. Home Language (HL) paper or First Additional Language (FAL) paper? All schools are encouraged to enter their Candidates to write the Home Language paper, however, Candidates may choose to write the First Additional Language paper. Indicate whether your Candidates are writing the HL paper or the FAL paper. Mark the choice clearly in the appropriate column. If there is no indication for the First Additional Language exam it is assumed that the Candidate will write the Home Language exam.

FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (FAL) ENTRIES The First Additional Language exam paper will be based on the same Anthology and theme as the Home Language paper. It will require just as much preparation for the Examination as the Home Language paper. The FAL paper will differ from the HL paper in that there will be fewer question choices and simpler language will be used in some of the exam questions. It is by no means an easier paper, but it is a more truncated one, that is better suited to FAL Candidates. Condition applied to First Additional Language Entries: To be eligible to write the FAL examination paper, Candidates must already be registered at their school for English First Additional Language as a Matric subject.

ANTHOLOGY TO BE STUDIED FOR ALL ENTRIES The Anthology entitled The Darkness in Man’s Heart is the prescribed text for the 2016 English Olympiad. As the Examination is based on an open-book system, every Candidate receives a copy of this Anthology, together with a Study Guide, both of which are included in the entry fee. While this adds to the cost of entering the Olympiad, an open-book examination allows the Candidates to take the Anthology into the exam and enables more creative answers. The organizers of the English Olympiad cannot permit the use of photocopies. It is illegal in terms of copyright laws. Note that the Study Guide may not be taken into the exam.

ENTRY FORMS Please fill out both sides of the enclosed Entry Form to enter your Candidates, and fax/email it to the Olympiad Officer before the closing dates shown under the section ENTRY FEES & CLOSING DATES below.

DETAILED ASSESSMENTS

Provision has been made for a limited number of Candidates to apply for comment on their examination scripts. Application should be made in writing when your school sends through their entries and payment to the Olympiad Officer. Each Detailed Assessment costs R135.00 over and above the actual entry fee. A maximum of 2 Detailed Assessments per school is allowed. The assessment will be sent to the Candidate via their school after the results have been released. The deadline for requests for Detailed Assessments is Friday 30 October 2015.

ENTRY FEES & CLOSING DATES

The entry fee covers the administration, study and exam materials for the Olympiad, and postage costs as follows: Study materials: Ordinary Registered Mail If schools would like to receive their study materials by courier, please see the PostNet Courier Price schedule (on website or contact office).
