JOHN M. HARA, FAIAis the founder and president of John Hara Associates Inc., established in 1970. Earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1962 from the University of Pennsylvania, Hara worked for design firms in Switzerland and France before returning to Honolulu to teach at the University of Hawaii and to establish his own firm. For over 40 years in his clear devotion to work in Hawaii, Hara’s intent has been to explore the master planning and design of sites and buildings that continue to redefine the contemporary language of Hawaiian architectural traditions.
GRANT CHANG, AIA is a senior designer at Solomon, Cordwell, Buenz (SCB) San Francisco, working remotely here in Hawaii on local projects. Prior to working at SCB, Chang worked at SOM (2007-2012) and Gensler (2012-2014) focusing on large-scale mixed-used and commercial towers as well as urban master-planning projects both in the states and internationally. Chang is particularly interested in socially responsible and environmentally responsive design and how that can influence regionally appropriate architecture. He holds a BA from Dartmouth College (2004) and a Master’s of Architecture from the University of California Berkeley (2007).
GORDON D.C. TYAU, AIA ME is member emeritus of the AIA, and co-founder, with Gus Ishihara, of Group 70 Lab, now Group 70 International. He was Graduate Chairman, Associate Professor, Associate Dean, and acting Dean for the School of Architecture, University of Hawaii at Manoa. His experience includes residential, institutional and commercial/industrial projects. He received a Master of Science in Urban Design from Columbia University (1967, Fellowship), and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley (1966, Honors).
KRISTIN NAKAGAWA, AIA is the owner of Inhabit LLC, with experience in boutique commercial and custom residential architecture through her years working in Honolulu, San Francisco, Boston and Florida. She has served as past AIA Honolulu treasurer and board member as well as a current Construction co-chair. She earned a BArch at Cornell University, which included studies abroad in Tokyo and Rome, and a post-graduation travel fellowship in mainland China and Hong Kong.
JOHN P. WHALEN, FAICPis an urban and regional planner whose professional career extends more than four decades in both government and private practice. Prior to founding the Honolulu-based consulting firm PlanPacific, Whalen served as Director of Land Utilization for the City and County of Honolulu. Now semi-retired from consulting practice, he has served since April 2015 as Chair of the Hawaii Community Development Authority. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and was elected to the College of Fellows in 2006. Whalen holds a master’s degree in urban planning from Columbia University School of Architecture.

On Saturday, September 17, AIA Honolulu welcomed our members and guests to the NOAA Daniel K.
Inouye Regional Center as we honored and celebrated our 2016 Design Award winners. This LEED Gold project,
designed by Ferraro Choi and Associates Ltd., and HOK Architects, received both an Excellence Award and the Mayor’s Choice Award at our 2015 Design Awards. This year’s gala location was a first for AIA Honolulu, and we hope that it becomes a tradition for us to hold our Design Awards Gala hereafter at an award-winning facility and/or a notable work of architecture within Hawaii, as we share design excellence with our members, families, friends and the entire community.
Our AIA Honolulu Design Awards were started by our fellow members in 1958, probably talking story over a few beers at the Halekulani. We continue this legacy and tradition with the same passion that was started 58 years ago, with the goal of showcasing to the community and honoring the works of our colleagues. As in the past, our jurors this year were given the difficult task of selecting the best of the best from a large number of entries. The 2016 awards honor and recognize the work of the awardees and their teams. They were inspired, tenacious and brought their creative ideas to life. Architects make dreams come true and improve the quality of life.
We acknowledge, thank and give a special recognition to the many entries submitted this year. Although not all recipients of an award, from my perspective, every entry is a winner. We thank you for the time and effort to take the photos, craft the narratives and put the submittals together, as it is no small task.
2016 will also be another first for AIA as we inaugurate the AIA Honolulu Student Design Awards. These awards were created to honor student achievements in the design studio and provide a forum to be recognized for design excellence and celebrated beyond the academic setting. It is our collective responsibility and privilege to nurture the next generation of architects in partnership with the School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of Hawaii. We are proud to recognize our emerging professionals for their hard work and dedication in front of our accomplished design and industry professionals.
On behalf of the entire AIA Honolulu Board of Directors and staff, a warm aloha to the NOAA Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center and their team for their generous time and assistance for letting us host our 2016 AIA Design Awards Gala at this wonderful facility. Finally, many thanks to our esteemed jurors, our members and the SoA students who submitted their projects this year, and congratulations to all of the 2016 award winners!
BEN LEE, FAIA, LEED AP 2016 President of AIA Honolulu

BUILDING A HOUSE to suit Thailand’s tropical extremes and the needs of a growing family was an exciting challenge for architect Janice Li, AIA of Tadpole Studio. The site, an inherited plot of family land, sits next to a canal in the urban bustle of Bangkok. “Our goal was to design a house that is responsive to the environment and appropriate for the family’s lifestyle,” explains Li. “It was also important to design with resources that were locally available to the project at that time and at that place.”
Looking to traditional Thai house design and Geoffrey Bawa’s tropical buildings to learn effective and functional ways of addressing Bangkok’s unique environmental forces—strong sun, high humidity, monsoon rain and seasonal flooding—Li found suitable materials and established the appropriate placement of the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. Building the home and its separate dwellings—a guest house and a carport—in communion with the area’s natural elements created an organic ventilation throughout
the structures. Special consideration was paid to provide storage and placement for the family’s belongings and valued collections throughout the home’s interior. Wide, overhanging roof eaves were designed to provide ample shade from the sun, while the 40-degree angle of the roof allows quick rainwater run-off during the annual monsoon season and is intended to accommodate photovoltaic panels in the future.
Li’s purposeful design exacted the homeowners’ requests while engaging and preserving the history of the land—a former fruit orchard. Local fruit-bearing trees, such as mango, banana and jackfruits, and other aromatic plants, now line the entry driveway of the home, enhancing the arrival experience. Tall trees shade the house from the rising and setting sun on the east and west sides, and shelter the family’s new urban oasis. n

THE “HEAVENLY” MONIKER fits the welcoming and enchanting Cafe Lani Hawaii. The Ala Moana Center eatery features refreshing sights and scents to stimulate more than just tastebuds. “We were very focused on every space a customer could be in,” explains Hiroto Suzuki, AIA, owner at Wanderlust Plus. “We care about how the customer feels and what they experience while they’re dining. Lighting and atmosphere are an important part of that.”
Suzuki designed three areas within the interior, using custom-built furniture, unique structural elements and original graphics to distinguish them. The park space, picnic-style seating for a bright and casual meal; the forest space, family-style seating tucked beneath the towering floor-to-ceiling poles; and the home space, a softly lit lounge area against the back wall with cozy booth seating. Establishing distinct yet cohesive spaces within the restaurant offers a fun variation for both new and returning guests, says Suzuki.
The adjacent coffee bar features natural materials and modern organic shapes, corresponding with the symbolic tree structures. Large, natural-wood planks frame the wall behind the bar, setting the casual atmosphere for the restaurant and visually differentiating the communal dining area from the other seating arrangements. Peppered pops of color and dynamic visuals complements the modern, Hawaii-style interior.
A viewing window showcases the bakers at work to passing shoppers and lures guests in with the scent of freshly baked bread. The main kitchen area, centrally adjacent to the dining room, is defined by suspended shelving extended from the high ceiling, housing decorative ceramics, plants and glass jars to create an open concept while obscuring the necessary cooking equipment. The openness allows diners to watch and enjoy Cafe Lani’s food from its start as fresh ingredients to a beautifully plated, finished dish. n

TRADITIONAL AND MODERN BLEND beautifully at Ala Moana Center’s Tempura Ichidai. Architect Hiroto Suzuki, AIA, owner at Wanderlust Plus, created an authentic Japanese dining experience imbedded in a chic, contemporary setting. Suzuki crafted a beautiful and functional layout by dividing the restaurant in half, creating two open kitchens with mirrored tempura stations to allow the chefs easy mobility and direct access to many customers at one time. “Our client let us do what we needed to do to make this vision work,” says Suzuki. “The concept of the restaurant is to showcase the chef and gift the customer with cooked-to-order tempura. The functionality of the space was an important issue and we appreciated their trust in us to find a solution.”
To unify the space, strong linear and architectural design elements were adopted throughout the restaurant. Multi-layered wooden slats act as a repeating element throughout the dining space—floating above the counter seating for spatial depth and
integrated into the booths for solidity. Earthy materials and soft neutral hues shape the tranquil aesthetic, establishing a traditional Japanese ambiance reimagined from a modern perspective. Natural stone accents, ceramic tiles and decorative fabrics were incorporated to provide texture and harmony to the room.
Tempura Ichidai was designed to offer guests a unique and restful experience, a place of sanctuary away from the bustling mall crowd, and an enjoyable spot for special occasions or casual mealtime meet-ups. Exacting a simplistic and elegant plan, Suzuki fashioned the restaurant’s custom furniture and lighting to highlight the beauty of this authentic dining experience. With both counter and booth seating able to accommodate small or large parties, the guests can watch the chefs as they skillfully prepare their meals. This restaurant is the client’s first outside of Japan, as well as Hawaii’s first tempura bar. n
