There’s something about crime fiction that makes it truly international. As well as reaching readers in all corners of the world, the writers themselves are often rooted in their homelands, opening up new vistas, street corners and backdrops, always writing themes that are universal, and increasingly so today in our shrinking world in which villains have no boundaries.

2016’s Festival will have a truly international flavour. Harrogate will fling its charming doors open to authors from America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada, and more. There will be the Giants of the Genre we’ve come to expect from a Festival as brilliant as Harrogate, and we’ll be exploring that enticing world of the page turner. Page turners have that magical ability to transport you elsewhere. To keep you hooked, desperate for the next chapter, a little bereft when it’s all over, because you want more. Welcome once more to our old, and new, partners in crime. It never ceases to amaze me how it is possible to keep building on the previous year’s success of our Festival but with Peter James as our Festival Programming Chair this year, the line-up looks incredibly exciting once again.

Peter has given this year’s Festival an international flavour. Crime books, like good beer, travel well. No matter what country in the world you’re in, a pint and a book are reliable companions.

There’s no doubt that the Festival has helped the Theakstons name travel across the world.

Now in its 14th year, 2016’s programme is not only international in its breadth, but intelligent in design. It’s an honour and delight for us all that Peter is Programming Chair. He was voted the Best Crime Author of All Time in a WH Smith poll, so who better than to take the helm of the best crime writing festival of all time.

We may be biased saying it’s the best. But it so happens that just about everyone who attends, agrees. Peter James discusses the role of real life cases with his friend and advisor, former Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett. The once Commander of Brighton and Hove Police said he’s ‘yet to find a

procedural mistake’ in James’ Roy Grace series. Joining them are Yrsa Sigurdardottir, a civil engineer as well as ‘Iceland’s answer to Stieg Larsson’, who applies her ability to fix problems to her novels, often inspired by true events. And Sharon Bolton, whose contacts in the Metropolitan Police have helped inspire stories and characters. Keeping proceedings accurate is chair, Mari Hannah, author of the Kate Daniels series, whose career as a Probation Officer no doubt influenced her writing – as well as that of her partner’s - a former murder detective.

Channelling Christie will be Ruth Ware, who said she owes Christie a debt of inspiration for her debut In A Dark, Dark Wood, along with period crime writer Catriona McPherson, who has certainly found a niche for gentle mysteries in the Dorothy L Sayers mode, albeit with a playful sense of humour, with her lady detective Dandy Gilver.

Set a Scientist to Catch a KillerFri 22 July, 3.30pm | Tickets £10 There’s no hiding from science. Forensics has transformed detecting crimes, taking the genre from the puzzle in the library to the evidence under the microscope. Chair Peter James gets the facts straight with ex-CID officer Dave

Gaylor and Forensic Podiatrist Haydn Kelly. Giving evidence are authors with a few ‘ologies under their belts. Dr Brooke Magnanti studied anthropology and mathematics with a doctorate in forensic science. Working as an escort, she penned Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call Girl, and is author of The Turning Tide.
