The Goethe-Institut is the official cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany and also conducts German language courses around the world. It operates 153 institutes in 96 countries as well as the 12 institutes in Germany.

Every year more than 45,000 learners enjoy the personal service, the international atmosphere and the high quality of our language courses in Germany.

It is one of our top priorities to provide optimal support to children and teens in their growth and development. By getting to know the world at an early age and learning to communicate

with people from other cultures, they will be better prepared to face the challenges of the future.

In our courses for children and teens your chil-dren will benefit from the unique experience of learning German in a fun and pleasant setting while getting to know Germany.

OUR CLASSESLEARNING GERMAN THE FUN WAY

EXAMINATIONS AND CERTIFICATESSHOW WHAT YOU CAN DO

GERMAN FOR ALL LEVELS

To get the young participants in our teen courses off to a good start, there is a short test at the beginning. This is to make sure our course participants are placed in the right course level.

COMMUNICATIVE AND INTERACTIVE

Learning German at the Goethe-Institut means actively experiencing and using the language in pairs and in groups, for example through role plays, with interviews and in projects. The lessons are suited to the various age groups and contain plenty of variety. Speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar are linked in a meaningful way, quickly familiarizing the young learners with the German language. The teaching language is German, of course.

EXPERIENCE GERMANY

In the leisure time program, the participants have enjoyable and informal opportunities to try out what they are learning in the lessons. An integral part of the teaching program are the excursions with the teacher to learn about Germany and its people. Immersion in a German-speaking environment, combined with our effective teaching methods, will ensure more fun for the learners through progress they can see within a short time.

EXAMINATIONS AND CERTIFICATES

During the course, participants have the opportunity if they wish to write an internationally recognized Goethe-Institut examination at various levels. The exams are tailored to the various age groups.

OUR LEISURE-TIME PROGRAMSPORTS, GAMES AND FUN …

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALSALMOST LIKE AT HOME

PROGRAMS FOR THE ENTIRE DAY

With our varied and action-packed leisure pro-gram, boredom doesn’t stand a chance. Every day our team of counselors offers a wide range of sports as well as creative, musical or cultural activities. We are also happy to accommodate special requests from our young guests when-ever possible, provided that sufficient numbers of participants are interested.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES FOR ALL INTERESTS

The boarding schools where the courses take place are situated amid beautiful scenery and have attractive indoor and outdoor sports facilities. With full supervision, the participants can play such sports as soccer, handball, volley-ball, basketball, tennis, badminton, table tennis and billiards. They can also go cycling, hiking and swimming. Depending on the course location various special activities such as riding, golf, rowing, canoeing, sailing and climbing may be available, to name just a few possibilities.

DESIGNING AND CREATING – WHILE HAVING FUN

Creative activities such as theater, mime, painting, pottery, crafts, playing music, film making, photo contests, and helping with the course blog are an integral part of our courses – not to mention games, barbecue nights, disco evenings and movies.

EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE

Examples of excursions include sightseeing tours, visits to museums and exhibitions and trips to concerts, theater performances and movies. With these activities, complemented by our guided outings, our young course participants really get to know Germany.

CAREFULLY SELECTED COURSE LOCATIONS

Our young learners courses take place at renowned boarding schools, sports academies, conference centers and hotels in Germany’s most scenic regions.

The classrooms and dormitories are situated on a campus along with the sports facilities and green spaces.

COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION

In the boarding schools double rooms and dorm-style multi-bed rooms are available with a shower and WC. Boys and girls are accommo-dated separately. Some course locations offer single rooms, in some cases for an extra charge.

MEALS WITH PLENTY OF VARIETY

Full board includes three substantial meals a day with plenty of variety. It also includes a selection of refreshments and snacks during course breaks and in the afternoon.

Vegetarian meals and dishes without pork are available at all mealtimes. We regret that we cannot offer Halal cooking or special mealtimes during Ramadan.

OUR TEAMORGANIZATION WITH EXPERIENCE

THE COURSE LEADERS

Our course leaders have plenty of experience in working with children and teens. On the campus they are responsible for organizing the lessons, the sports, culture and leisure-time program, and also for health and safety. They are available to the course participants and their parents at all times for any questions and suggestions, and are always ready to help or provide advice. Parents can contact the course leaders by e-mail or telephone.

THE TEACHERS

The young participants in the Young Learners Program benefit from the expertise and quali-fications of our teachers. Each class has its own class teacher. The lessons, with a maximum class size of 16, are designed by the teachers with the age group in mind. The activities are varied, with plenty of changes of pace. Classroom activities take the form of a playful, interactive process. Na-turally our teachers respond to individual abilities and learning objectives and are pleased to help when learners have special requests. They are also available outside class room hours for advice and individual study assistance. The classroom teachers accompany their classes on the excursions for getting to know Germany and its people.

THE COUNSELORS

Our counselors are there for the course parti-cipants 24 hours a day. They plan the program of sports, cultural and leisure-time activities, taking the wishes of the participants into account. The counselors are available to deal with all everyday questions and concerns that arise during the course. They are handpicked by the Goethe-Institut for these courses and have a great deal of experience in working with children and teens.

On average, at least one counselor is available for a maximum of 16 course participants. The younger the participants, the more intensive the support by the counselors. This ensures the best possible leisure-time program and the right level of supervision.

The spa resort of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg is situated amid the hills and forests of the Rhine valley, overlooked by the romantic Ebernburg Castle. The 13th century castle houses a family holiday and educational center with modern, fully equipped class-rooms, dormitories and recreation facilities.

The castle grounds are an ideal spot for learners to relax and enjoy outdoor activities. It‘s also a perfect setting for them to experience medieval times through games and role plays. We take our course participants on outings to explore nature and hike in the hills. There‘s also a nearby outdoor pool where the group can go swimming. We use the weekends for excursions to the enchanting Rhine valley and for shopping trips to Mainz.

Aachen, once the residence of Charlemagne, has a rich history dating back 2,000 years. It is situated near Germany‘s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, 70 kilometers to the west of Cologne. A visit to the historical city center and its world- famous sights is like a trip to the Middle Ages. The international student neighborhood, with its many bistros, galleries, flea markets and shops, is a paradise for the young.

The youth hostel, the Euregionale Jugendgästehaus, is a meeting point for young people from all over Europe. It has modern facilities, its own bistro and a terrace for sunbathing. We use the spacious grounds to relax and enjoy outdoor activities. Swimming enthusiasts always enjoy the beautiful outdoor pool nearby. As a group we will undertake daytrips and excursions to Cologne and the scenic Rhine valley.

Bamberg, once an important city in the Holy Roman Empire, is among Germany‘s most beautiful medieval- baroque cities. The sights from 1,000 years of history have earned it the status of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Equally fascinating to young visitors is Bamberg‘s modern identity as a thriving university town where there is always plenty to see and do.

The Aufseesianum boarding school is at the heart of the historic town centre. It has a gymnasium, common rooms and music practice rooms, a computer room and an excellent party room in the basement. We‘ll explore the city‘s scenic surroundings and the river valley as a group and go on excursions, for example to Nuremberg, with its many museums, monuments and attractive shopping areas.

Wannsee is a prosperous, leafy suburb between Berlin and Potsdam, about 25 kilometers from the center of Germany’s capital. Situated amid several lakes, Wannsee has long been beloved by Berliners as a spot for pleasant daytrips. The youth guest-house – a beautifully renovated turn-of-the-century villa with accommodation in the adjoining modern building – is situated right on the shore of Wannsee, surrounded by woods and greenery. The spacious common rooms include a theater where our young course participants can put on plays. They can also enjoy many different sports activities. During the course we take trips to see the sights and museums in Berlin and explore the surrounding area.

The splendid city of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Cul-tural Heritage Site. The historic center of this musical metropolis is replete with architectural treasures. On a stroll through the narrow streets, visitors can admire medieval, Renaissance and baroque buildings in close proximity.

The modern Kolpinghaus Salzburg youth hostel is near the city center on the banks of the Salzach River. A cycle path leads directly to green parkland.

We use the sports ground behind the hostel for soc-cer and basketball and play beach volleyball on the sand court. The music room has everything required to practice or play for enjoyment. From the rooftop terrace, there are beautiful views of the city and the spectacular mountain scenery. With our participants we visit exciting exhibitions, attend concerts and make excursions into the nearby Alpine region.

HEALTH

Please inform us on the enrollment form of any health restrictions (allergies, diabetes, medication, etc.).

Let us know about any special dietary considerations (vegetarian diet, non-pork menu, kosher meals, etc.).

Doctor’s notes must be provided in English or German.

INSURANCE

For all participants, the Goethe-Institut takes out basic medical insurance as well as accident and liability coverage with an insurance company.

For details on the health coverage, please refer to Section 9.2 of our Terms and Conditions.

CLOTHING

Participants need appropriate clothing for sports and cold, rainy weather (rainwear, sweaters, close-toed shoes, gym kit). Laundry services are offered at all locations. Clothing should be labeled with your child’s name.

POCKET MONEY

We recommend pocket money of about €80/week. It is kept in the safe for the duration of the course and handed out at certain times. Airline tickets and passports are also kept in the safe.

HOUSE RULES

House rules apply at the boarding schools. They regulate such matters as quiet during night hours. Participants under the age of 18 are not permitted to smoke or drink alcohol during their stay. House rules are made known at the start of the course and are binding for all participants.

In case of violations, the team reserves the right to contact parents. If necessary, consequences may extend to a written reprimand and expulsion from the course.

ENROLLMENT

Please note the following points when completing the enrollment form:

Complete the self-assessment (if you have learned German before).

Sign the waiver.

Provide your parents’ telephone number and e-mail address.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

Most of our young guests arrive unaccompanied by plane. At the destination airport they are met by our Goethe-Institut counselor teams (identifiable by their orange T-shirts and name tags) and supervised if there is a wait before the departure of the transfer buses to the course locations.

We also organise the airport transfer on the departure date. Departing students are accompanied by Goethe-Institut staff members until they check in at the airport. (Exception: young adults program in Berlin and Vienna).

Please note:

Please advise us well ahead of time of the flight details, including arrival and departure times and flight numbers.

The accompanied transfer service to and from the airport with Goethe-Institut staff is included in the course fee. It is available only on the first and last course date between 7:00 am and 6 p.m.

An additional charge applies for the individual airport transfer in case of arrival or departure after 6 p.m. or before 7 a.m. In this case the transfer is by taxi.

SUPERVISION AND CARE

The supervision and care of the under-18 participants attending our courses is a top priority of the team running our young people’s programs.

Teens under 18 years of age are allowed to leave the campus at certain times and in small groups, and only with the permission of the course leaders.

By prior arrangement between parents and course leaders, children and teens may leave the campus at weekends to visit friends or relatives. However, this means that they will miss the leisure-time program.

When children and teens are picked up by friends or relatives, we require permission in writing from parents, specifying the people who are picking up their children.
